No European vacation
J.P. Hoornstra, who covers the Ducks for one of our sister newspapers, talked to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly recently about playing regular-season games in Europe and the fact that it negatively impacted both the Kings and Ducks this season. For the record, the Kings -- for the most part -- were against the trip, but did it out of a sense of duty to the league. Daly seemed to admit that early-season trips like that hurt the teams, but guess what, they're doing it again...twice! Why? Ca-ching, of course.
Kings, Ducks won't hop across the pond
And also, if you haven't already, don't forget to Vote for Krush!

All Right! I played along and voted for Krusher. But, I would have voted McSorley otherwise.
There were some tough choices like Norstrom versus Deadmarsh. Kinda fun!
I put my votes in.
A couple of difficult choices...I voted Stumpy over Brownie. Stumpy has had more playoff success.
I'm with big rob I would have voted McSorley over Krush but went with the boards dark horse choice.
Went with Carson over Kurri. Kurri was a great player but mostly for EDM
Put in Palffy over Cammi
To bad the younger group never saw Marcel play.He was a sniper who could score from any angle. Also always waved to the fans and was a big plus on the simmer taylor line, they couldnt have done it with out him,Simmer would of been just a Jimmy Fox type of player.
The Kings played in London out a sense of duty to the league? Hardly. They played in Anschutz's O2 Arena. It made the Kings' co-owner and the NHL money through exposure in Europe. Beneficial financially, but maybe not for the teams that participated.
I'm not a hockey player but I think to some degree, too much blame is given for the trip to London. I understand that practices get messed up and training had to start earlier, but at the end of the day how can a team claim that 5 months of below average performance is due to a plane trip that took 6hrs longer than a flight to NY?
Shakes, I agree, but don't. I dont think you can blame 5 months on the trip, but definatley the painfully horrible start of the season. Its not like the Kings flew to London, played the Ducks and flew back. They spent almost half of training camp in Europe, playing in a tourny with some of Europe's best teams. They stayed in Europe for what, two weeks? My point is, going from Europe all the way back to LA and get used to that big of a time difference, your sleep patterns are totally thrown off, practices, game times, everything. You cannot tell me it wouldnt effect the players when they got back to LA. And I know they're pros and all that, but it doesnt matter, its still going to effect you. And Im sure the Kings did everything they could to minimize the effects, but at some point its gotta start taking a toll on your body. It didn't help matters the Kings had a serious chemistry issue on D and some shaky goaltending thrown into the mix.
Anyway, this season was pretty much gonna be wash anyway, the trip took its toll. I think the positive the Kings can take out of all this is the young core including Bernier got a moment to grow with each other and thats a very good thing. They were also 4-1 in Europe including winning the season opener in London. Im happy the Kings got to do something that at the time is pretty special. Its not an outdoor game or anything, but still pretty cool. Im even happier knowing they wont have to do it again for a long time.
I agree with Shakes - this stuff is overblown. They fly on a chartered jet, stay in 1st class hotels, eat the best foods and get a free trip to one of the worlds great cities. How hard is that really?
Just declare Lucky the winner and be done with it.
It made the Kings' co-owner and the NHL money through exposure in Europe.
I'm not claiming this didn't happen, but I find it difficult to imagine how.
It cost a lot of money to schlep the teams & support staff over there, set up a rink for 2 measly games (to then tear it down).
Did Londoners fill the building & pay ticket prices equal to or greater than what we pay in SoCal? Or was it jersey sales and/or NHL Center Ice subscriptions that spiked enough to cover the costs?
I have a question for you so called experts out there ;)
What about GM Dean Lombardi is concentrating on getting Wade Redden after the season?? Ottawa wants to get rid of him, and Kigns need a skilled defenseman. Do you think we can get him, and do we really want to??
Curious about your answers..
I would be all in favor of the Kings going after Wade Redden - if it is cost effective. I believe Wade might be seeking more than six million dollars annually with his next contract. Anything more than that price though, and I hope Dean would stay away...
I do not believe that Redden is the answer for the Kings. I think he is going to wind up in Chicago. If he would not
allow Ottawa to trade him to San Jose why would he
come to L.A. on his own?
At this point of his career
I think he is on the decline anyway. Kings should go after Bryce
Salvador of the Devils as
he is more of a physical prescence that LA needs.
I think it's going to tough to sign any really good ufa to LA. If we are going to get some D it will have to come via trade.
Ok, good answers.. I agree with all of you, but the reason Redden stayed in Ottawa and didnt let them trade him is because he believes they have a chance of winning the cup this year.. Even if they win or not I think he will move when he is an UFA.
Is it really so hard to get UFA´s here? We signed 5 of them before this season, and some big names too.. Handzus (before this season), Nagy, Stuart, Preissing (really great season in Ottawa) are top players...
