Player evaluation: Cammalleri

MICHAEL CAMMALLERI
This season: 63 games, 19 goals, 28 assists, minus-16 rating.
Positives: They all came early. Cammalleri was named an assistant captain at the start of this season, the youngest member of the Kings' leadership, and scored 10 goals in his first 10 games. He also further proved that he has the best shot on the team, with an unmatched ability to one-time the puck.
Negatives: After his brilliant start, Cammalleri scored only nine goals in his final 53 games. Nagging injuries didn't help, but Cammalleri took a huge step backward from the previous season, when he totaled 34 goals and 46 points. Also, there have been whispers -- loud whispers, to be accurate -- about how good of a teammate Cammalleri is. Cammalleri insisted that last year's arbitration process didn't impact him, but his downturn is otherwise hard to explain.
Looking ahead: 2008-09 will be a crossroads season for Cammalleri, in every sense. If he's not traded -- a move the Kings are expected to explore this summer -- he will return and enter the final year of his contract, needing a big comeback. Cammalleri clearly has first-line talent, but he will need to re-prove himself, both as a scorer and a potential team leader.
Contract situation: Signed through 2008-09 (cap number of $3.35 million next season).
I have two words for his highness,
Bye Bye
Had not heard he was a bad teammate...I guess you trade him, even coming off a bad year. Atleast he has a tradeable contract.
Cammalleri came away from last year's arbitration process pissed. I'm sure he is taking a page out Craig Conroy's book. That is to say play enough to get traded. Ever notice how well Conroy bounced back with his ne team? Cam sure isn't a play maker. All he has is that dumb going down to one leg shot.
Trade him away.
I have always liked Cammalleri. I followed him when he was a Wolverine, a Monarch, and now a King. He can put the puck in the back of the net. He didn't have a good season this year, obviously....and he does get knocked off the puck easily. In addition we all expect him to give DL a hard time resigning him to a deserving contract.
2 words.
TRADE BAIT
Every ones talking about trading CAMMY... but I am talking about DUCKS LOSING!!DUCKS SUCK!! 2-0! Dallas heads to Texas with the lead!
As ive said at beginning of this last season, if we cant sign Cammy near the trade deadline next season and his numbers are up on a healthy season, then trade him for maximum value, and dont trade him in the summer of this season while his numbers are down as we prob wont get more than a pick whick we dont need at this time.
Oh yeah, GO STARS GO! I SMELL ROASTED DUCK WITH FLYING V SAUCE ON THE SIDE!!

Couldn't have said it better Rich. This was supposesd to be Cammy's breakout season, actually last year ended up being his breakout season, this season he broke down. If I were a professional athlete, I'd go out and show the world how much I was worth (aka: Brownie). He seems to have taken the 3.5mil personally (did I just say that, 3.5 mil personally, damn I wish I had played hockey....)and it affected his play. He started well and I do believe his ribs never healed throughout the season. Trade bait? Yes. When? Hard to say. I'd definitely entertain offers this season and jump if DL gets a good one. My personal best is to package him with the 22nd pick to move up and snag another top line d-banger. My real personal best is to throw him and the 22nd at the Bolts for their No.1 but that would be Fantasyland. How about Cammy and our No. 2 for the Bolts No. 1? See?? I just can't get Stamkos out of my mind.....Regardless, if he plays at the beginning of the season like he finished this past season, he's gone. Maybe he's just what the Leafs are looking for, what a perfect fit....
Moondoogie - feel you. I can't stop devising scenarios where the Kings can pry Stammer out of the hands of TB. My reasoning is that the Lightning have a empty prospect pool. Their system has two goalie and thats about it. They need to plug young talent in there fast before they sink lower and piss Vinny off and in to the loving arms of Montreal.
I say the Kings keep their #2, offer TB Cammy, the #22, a second round pick, Peter Harrold and Zeiler and Tukkonin (maybe even a Meckler of Joey Ryan) for their #1.
They get scoring and D, and prospect depth.
We get Stamkos and Doughty, Easy, right?

OK, I have to ask Rich, are you referring to the loud whispers of the fans or has this actually been on the radar of the players? I realize you're not going to name names or give quotes, but your statement could use some clarification. Are these whispers coming from the team?
everyone seems to assume that cammalleri's bad year was a result of essentially emotional factors, e.g. that he was mad at the team, or selfish, or whatever. i don't really buy that. if that were the case, then why would he have been so productive early? the fact that he started so well but then faded suggests two things to me: first, i think that after his very fast start, other teams began keying in on him and taking away his shot. second, he got hurt and his injury bothered him for the remainder of the season.
with that in mind, the keys for him next season need to be to re-establish the velocity and accuracy of his shot, which can be extremely effective as we all saw. he also (obviously) needs to stay healthy. i suspect that those two might go hand in hand.
I've never been a big fan of Cammie. He's a bit too cocky for my tastes and that one-knee shot makes him look like a little kid trying to impress his friends.
If he played tough like Lapy or Theo Fleury then I can see how the Kings can hold on to him but I doubt DL has forgotten the whole arbitration deal last summer and his fade into mediocrity for 3/4 of season.
In his defense, he got knicked and wasn't the same player and he did score 34 goals (80 pts) in the '06 season.
I'm very surprised about the comments of Cammy not being a good teammate. I would also like to know if that's the fans impression or actual teammates?
I like Cammy a lot. I think the injury completely ruined his season. Let's not forget that his injury occurred while standing up for a teammate.
If trading him brings back a top 4 D'man I can understand doing it. Otherwise, I think next year he'll have a big rebound season and I would hope that would happen in a Kings uniform.
i think he did take the loss in arbitration personally. i don't think it was the reason for his struggles. i'd be as happy as anyone to see him bounce back for us next year, but i think he needs to make a few adjustments. namely, being a little more creative in his shotmaking and in his approach... the one-knee shot is cool, but if you use it too much it's not beneficial at all.
and i agree with Goon Squad... are any of these whispers at all coming from the players. if there's one thing i know about kings fans, it's that they jump to conclusions pretty quickly.
sorry, i meant "we" jump to conclusions too quickly. i'm guilty of it as well... call it "erik ersberg syndrome."
I think Cammy was a targeted guy after a quick start and his injuries pretty much killed the season. I like him in a Kings uniform, but after he asked for 6 Mil a season last summer, I don't think we'll be able to retain him. If he doesn't sign an extention by the draft, trade him straight up to the Leafs or Islanders for their 1st pick (no need to send our other pick, Cammy is a bonafide NHL scorer) and possibly a proven NHL Level defense. Lets use that extra pick to get Schenn or which ever D man is left of that group.
+1 for the question about source of the loud whispers. Did it come from the team and is it one of our core players?
I think your being to hard on Cammi.I think when he saw what Blake was getting paid for being just a average D-Man.Why not try my hand at it.
I love Cammi, have since he broke on to our roster. I enjoy watching him play, although the latter half of this season was dissapointing. I would love to see him in a Kings uni for years to come. I think he has potential to be a fairly prolific scorer.
That being said, he's expendable and we need defense. I won't be singing any swan songs if we can get a good return, which he is definately worth.
Keep in mind he is the one who took the Kings to arbitration; they did not take him. He pulled the gun but instead is the one who got shot.
Contract headache since he came into the league (all 4 of them: 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007) but he is a good player so if he can moved for a legitimate top 4 defensemman (young) go for it.
I won't lie, I have never liked Cammalleri. I remember when he was a rookie and he just seemed so damn cocky and selfish. And that has never gone away. He just rubs me the wrong way.
That being said, I think he should only be moved if the Kings can get a really good d-man in exchange.
Earlier this season Cammy was the post-game guest after HNIC and it seemed pretty clear from the callers that they all wanted to see him on their Canadian teams' rosters. That's why I suggest offering him up to the Leafs who clearly have to rebuild and that means getting rid of their veterans. The Kings could use a good veteran d-man and Toronto has a few of them to offer (McCabe, Kaberle). Cammalleri is also from that area so he might be willing to give the Leafs a slight hometown discount so they would have assurances he would sign long-term next season. Even after this down season for him I think the Canadian teams would be willing to give him another shot and expect that he will rebound big time.
