Player evaluation: Frolov

ALEXANDER FROLOV
This season: 71 games, 23 goals, 44 assists, plus-1 rating.
Positives: Increased his assist total to 44, from his previous high of 36. That's a positive development, considering Frolov has had the term ``puck hog'' attached to his name. As usual, Frolov was tremendously strong on the puck and seemed to improve his work ethic this season. He took a career-low 22 penalty minutes.
Negatives: Frolov's goal total decreased from 35 to 23 and was more in line with the 24 and 21 he scored the previous two seasons. More passing, and fewer shots on goal (160, compared to 195 the previous season) factor in there, but Frolov needs to be more productive on the power play, where he scored only five goals this season.
Looking ahead: It seems that Frolov has had the word ``enigma'' attached to his name for a while, but he showed signs of breaking out of that this season. Continuing to share the puck will increase his value in the eyes of coaches and teammates, but Frolov can't afford to get too far away from what made him a 35-goal scorer the previous season.
Contract situation: Signed through 2009-10 (cap number of $2.9 million next season).
Frolov's biggest problem he has always been a slow starter. If he get get his game right out of the gate and keep it there, he will be great. If not then another season of waiting for his game to show up...
Frolov = puck hog, WTF?
Seriously, I've never heard that one before. For years people were saying that he should shoot more and pass less. Puck possession skills do not equate to being a puck hog. The term "puck hog" would be better served in an evaluation of Mike Cammalleri. Seriously Rich, is this something you've been hearing around the room, that Frolov is a "puck hog?"
Please remember that Frolov was injured all season when you evaluate his goal total.
He'll be back next season, better than ever.
Lets not forget that he was playing injured most of the season.
Furthermore, it's kinda difficult to put up big numbers when you have a ZERO like Armstrong at center and the real puck hoh like Lord Cammi at left wing.
Remember when he had Sully & Nagy as his linmate, he was a point per game player.
Frolov is like a mountain on the puck. Even while injured, it took 2 to 3 players t knock him off the puck.
Next season, if healthy he'll score 30-40 goals.
I'd play him on a line with Kopi and Sully.
Too bad he's not so good on breakaways and shootouts. He gets way to deep and goalies beat him all the time.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Anthony. Frolov played hurt all season.
You wont ever see him dump the puck in the offensive zone, he always carries it in, even if it is 1 on 3 and he keeps the puck! Sully learned alot from him this season.
Frolov is a beast. A beast, I say.
i agree, Frolov is definetly not a puck hog. He is a great player at times, dominating the game to his style. his issue is consistency. if he put together a work ethic to match his talent, we could have a perinneal allstar.
Frolov has actually been one of my favorite Kings. He is so strong on the puck and always seems to be able to hang onto to it. I've always felt he was under-appreciated by fans at times but I think one season where he is healthy the whole time will change many minds.
Rich, was it from players, management or media that you heard the term "puck-hog" for Frolov ?
no mention of injury or playing hurt? for shame, Rich. usually your evaluations are right on.. even though I think you give Frolov credit here I think you sort of missed the mark. also worth mentioning is that he was playing with below-average linemates roughly half of the time.
I've always loved Frolov. Remember when he was a rookie and the only shot he had was the wrap around? I'd say he's improved since then. I was hoping he'd hit the 30 goal mark but he was playing on the 2nd unit PP and he was more of the set up man. When he had better linemates he was producing.

His ability to hang on to the puck is amazing. He reminds me of a guy like Thornton where he holds the puck and delays until someone is open then wham...there's the pass.
Obviously not the same numbers but the same kind of player. He was playing with Armstrong most of the season and then with Ivanans at times. I don't know how much you can expect. Too easy for another team to key in on the one skilled guy on that line (even though we know Crawford considers Armstrong "skilled").
Frolov was nearly a PPG producer. In fact, he was a PPG player up until the last few games of the season where he probably (and no one would blame him given the injury he's played through) put it on the cruise control. Frolov is, IMO, the most untouchable winger we have in that he's yet to reach his prime and the kind of return he would bring wouldn't even compensate the dimension he brings to the team. He's one of the guys that can make his other linemates shine no matter WHO they are.
I think he stepped up his game big time this year. I was impressed with how he played thru his injury and was a productive player most of the season. he's a monster with the puck. He's almost impossible to knock off the puck. His skill level is as good as anyone on the team. A little more consistency would go a long way, but its hard to argue with his talent.
Frolov Baggins is not a puck hog!! How could you possibly say that? The biggest knock on him his entire career so far has been that he passes *too much* and does not shoot enough. He doesn't just pass the puck for no reason to be sure, but he knows when to move it and give it to the player who can do the most with it.
Right now, Fro is the best player on the team and also probably the most unselfish.
Cammalleri is the epitome of a selfish puck hog. He passes up on moving the puck to teammates when they are open so that he can take the shot instead, which he tends to miss. He also loses the puck a lot in his attempts to do too much when he could have passed it to another open player that might have been able to do something with it.
God I hope Cammalleri gets traded to the Leafs this summer in exchange for one of their top d-men.
