Interesting way to start the day. Dean wasn't kidding about adding to our defensive depth and toughness.
I asked yesterday Rich if now that you see these picks falling, is there anything you can share from your pre-draft meetings with Dean and his coaching staff. Are these names ringing a bell with guys they were targeting?
I thought he was going to go in the first round for us with our 26th pick or something. That's great!
Rick, can you clarify. What happened to the pick that we traded to Calgary that got traded to Anaheim which then got traded to Phoenix? What did the Ducks get from Phoenix??
Does anyone know what his contract status is with his current team ? The NHL network guys say he will need time to develop but I wonder how long before he comes to North America.
Voinov? what? now I'm confused.
I'm very happy with this pick (see my post yesterday on taking Vojnov in the second http://www.insidesocal.com/kings/2008/06/pietrangelo-goes-no-4.html#comments), though i'm actually surprised DL picked a russian. Not 100% on this, but he has either 1 year or 3 years left on his RSL contract. His agent has said they are looking into having it rewritten or getting out of it.
I posted this about him a day or so ago: As for Vojnov (or Voynov), this kid has been playing as a defenceman in the RSL since he was 16! (In case you're not familiar with the RSL, this is pretty much unheard of). He's already played for Russia's U-20 WJC team twice, at 16 and at 17. He's not huge by any stretch, but you've got to remember that on the larger European ice surfaces, to play at the top Russian level, you have to have good mobility and positioning. To be honest, I haven't watched him play as much as the guys from the CHL, but i think his credentials speak volumes to his defensive capabilities. If you look at a guy like Nik Lidstrom, sure he's strong, but he's not big at all. He plays huge, however, b/c of his excellent positioning and how well he reads the play- i've got to believe that for a 16-17 year old to be playing in the RSL and make Russia's U-20 squad as a major underager, he is excellent in both these departments.
Our 21-under D core is looking stacked: Hickey, Doughty, Johnson, Vojnov, Teubert.
On Thursday the TSN did a mock draft. They had the Kings pick Voinov with their 2nd pick in the first round - the one we got for Mattias Norstrom from Dallas.
Pierre McGuire said he was a player similar ot Darius Kaperitis.
