Vacancies: apply inside

Just realized this on the way home…

Last year’s Kings captain: Rob Blake.
Last year’s alternate captains: Michael Cammalleri, Scott Thornton and Lubomir Visnovsky.

All gone.

Anyone want to start suggesting their replacements?

  • Why did I have to grow up a Kings fan?

    C – Brown
    A – Armstrong
    A – Kopitar
    A – Johnson

  • Nick

    C: Armstrong
A: Calder, Brown, and uh…Kopitar? Frolov? Handzus? Maybe only 2 assistant captains?

  • wavesinair

welp, this is what i was afraid of. we talked a bit about leadership on this team and people have ideas about who will step in but it seems to me, our main players are simply not ready yet. i’ve seen brown and kopitar interviewed a lot and they’re still green. so i’m afraid this season is going to be yet another year of our beloved kings sitting at the bottom of the basement. gee, what a surprise.

  • Quisp

    C – Kopitar
    A – Brown, Johnson, Frolov

  • Joey

    Captain Brown

    A-Kopitar
    A-Johnson
    A-Handzus

  • 28 KINGS

    Who’s left on the team?

    Army an A
Brown will get an A or C
    Stoll possibly an A

Wildcard if they sign him Aaron Miller or Modry

  • Vasquez

The new captain has got to be Dustin Brown.

    The new “A’s”-
    - Johnson
    - Stoll

Stoll was once the captain in Edmonton and is a veteran presence.

I don’t think they’ll go with three assistants again

  • Jonny

    C- Brown
    A- Kopitar
    A- O’Sullivan (hopefully he’s around)
    A- Johnson??

I dunno about the last one. I think it would be a great way to have the young guys take over the locker room. Give all the letters to the kids, unless someone relevant steps in.

  • Jonny

    Scratch that… I meant

    C -Brown
    A -Kopitar
A -O’Sullivan (if hes still here)
    A -Modry!

  • wavesinair

Armstrong is not a captain! Are you kidding me? And Brown is a kid, period! He’s not even close to being a captain. We are CLEARLY in trouble this year. These kids are going to get roughed up.

  • ryan oliver

    Army- C
    Brown- A
    Stoll- A
    JMFJ- A

  • Mark Case

    Captain: Dustin Brown

You know he has got it in him…

    Assistants:

Anje Kopitar, and Jack MF Johnson

  • Oz

    C- Brown
    A- Kopitar
    A- Stoll
    A- Army/Calder/????

Brown is so the heart and soul of this team. Has anyone ever listened to him interviewed? He says all the right things and works hard on and off the ice. He’s a 4 year veteran of this team now.

  • wavesinair

Let us please have some intelligent, level headed conversation about this. Have you heard these kids interviewed? Don’t you hear how they speak? POORLY! You need a calm, cool, smart-as-a-tack captain to lead a team to any kind of success. It’s gonna be a couple more years before that happens. I was hoping for some veteran leadership, but clearly that’s not going to happen this year. I seriously think Handzus or Calder is the correct choice for captain this year. Not a great choice, but the correct choice given the current roster.

  • LA Kingsmen

This is the way I see it

    C – Brown
    A – Armstrong
    A – Kopitar
    A Stoll

Maybe Frolov? J.Johnson needs one to two more years under he can get the A.

  • wavesinair

…and oz, i don’t know what you saw, but you didn’t see the profile on brown. he’s a kid who can’t speak well at all. he’s totally immature.

  • Oz

I don’t know what you saw either waves, but this is “kid” who made a commitment to this team and every interview I’ve seen he speaks just fine.

  • petey

    Brown – C
    Kopitar – A
    Johnson – A
    O’Sullivan – A

Time to give it to the kids.

  • LA Kingsmen

This is the way I see it

    C – Brown
    A – Armstrong
    A – Kopitar
    A Stoll

Maybe Frolov? J.Johnson needs one to two more years under he can get the A.

  • JDM

I second Brown getting the C.

How he speaks to the press and in the locker are two very different things I’m sure.

    O’Sullivan – A
    Kopitar – A

    and hopefully…

SIGN JASON SMITH AND GIVE HIM AN A! … probably a pipe dream, but it would fit perfecly. Give him 2 years at 2.2-2.6 mill per with some bonuses. You guys want vet leadership, he’ll give it to you.

If not Smith, then go ahead and give Army or peeeerhaps Johnson an A, though I agree that he needs a year or two for that.

  • anonymous lurker

Re. captaincy. We’re turning the team over to the kids, right? So no Armstrong or Calder; nobody who is not in the long-term plans. And of this group, Who speaks well? Is level-headed? Is respected? Is mature? Is good? Is liked universally? Who do you want the face of your team to be? Who IS the face of the team now? Answer: Anze Kopitar

Give one “A” to someone old enough to buy drinks for the team (i.e. someone in the Armstrong cohort). When this old-timer goes, give it to that young-young player who heretofore has not had much NHL playing time but shows the most promise this year (I’ll include Johnson in this group).

Give other “A” to another more-established member of long-term plan.

  • Mike

Rich, I believe I’m correct in this.

    06 – Norstrom, C / Blake, A / Conroy, A / Miller A (All but Blake were gone)

    07 – Blake, C / Visnovsky, A / Cammalleri, A / Thornton, A (All gone)

If I had my druthers, we’d have:

    08 – Brown, C / Johnson, A / Stoll, A / Jason Smith, A or Jay Boumeester, A

  • John

    C-Koptar
    A-Brown
    A-Johnson

It’s a youth movement, after all!

  • Seitz

It’s really hard to even guess without knowing the locker room dynamic. But based on who I perceive to enjoy the limelight and really be a leader on AND OFF the ice, I’d say Kopitar for captain, with Brown and a defenseman, probably Jack, for the other alternate. Anze and Dustin have been here long enough, and I think Jack’s ready to step into a leadership role.

I pick Kopitar of Brown simply because he’s clearly the team’s best player. You don’t have to be the best player to be captain, but it helps.

  • Matt George

Whoever said that “the kids are going to get knocked around this year” is high

Brown will smack anyone in this league down like a B!

    Brown deserves the C.

  • randall

    Rich Hammond for captain.

  • BallPointHammer

    C = Jack Johnson
    A = Dustin Brown
    A = Patrick O’Sullivan

No rotations with the ‘A’. If/when DB and/or POS miss a game(s) select substitute ‘A’ players.

  • Kenneth

    C: Dustin Brown
    A: Derek Armstrong
    A: Jack Johnson
    A: Alexander Frolov

  • AutomaticBzooty

Kopitar….best player, best spoken, also extraordinarily mature for his age. Also has experience as a leader and figurehead being Slovenia’s poster child.

  • Micah

Crosby was captain of the Pen’s last season at age 20.

Therefore, I don’t see any reason why Brown or Kopitar can’t be.

I think for next season I would prefer Brown because he lays it all on the ice every night and works his ass off. His performance, IMO, as well as his tenure (he is one of the longer tenured Kings now,) merits his consideration.

If it is a young guy, such as Brown, I think he will retain the captaincy for a long time.

If it happens to be an old-guy this upcoming season, say Armtrong or whoever, then I think the young player who will inherite it ;ater will be possibly Jack Johnson, because he has shown through his interviews on Kings Live, etc. that he likes to talk with the media, he is well-spoken, and he has the outgoing personality to be a good captain for years to come.

  • Eric K

    this year:
    C- Armstrong
    A- Brown
    A- Johnson
    A- Stoll

    next year:
    C- Brown
    A- Johnson
    A- Stoll
    A- Kopitar

this is under the assumption that Army isn’t gonna last through the youth movement. if he somehow does, he’ll hold onto an A.

  • http://yahoo.com George

No captain to start — rotate 3 alternates among the usual suspects noted above, and see who emerges over the season. 08-09 is going to be a rough ride; no point in putting extra pressure on a youngun who may not be quite ready for it.

  • mask0425la

Well, as your own selections indicate, there is NO clearcut choice. I don’t think Army will get the “C” given the team’s direction and I am not sure if Brown (who’d be my first choice) is quite ready yet. Given that this season will be wasted …uhmm, spent at the bottom in the hunt of for Tavares or Hedman, give rotating captaincy or at least co-captaincy to Brown, Kopitar, Johnson, maybe Stoll, and see who does the better job and emerges as a leader.

Anyone wants to see Norstrom come back for a year now that Flakey is gone again?

  • Starlight

    C – Brown
    A – Armstrong

Other potentials include O’Sullivan, Kopitar, Johnson and (if he signs with the Kings) Modry.

But since not even the thought-to-be-surefire Blake signing happened, who knows what will happen now…

  • OldKingsFan

I see a rotation in the works. Similiar to what you saw in Minnesota a few years ago.

If anyone it has to be between Kopi and Brown. Peronally I like Kopitar. Well spoken calm in the interview father’s a coach.

Bring it on. Kopi for for the “C”

  • Chuck

If you go by length of time served in LA, it’s Frolov. I just don’t think he’s vocal enough, or plays with enough emotion. I’m not putting him down. I think this young team will need someone with more fire. DB provides huge emotional lifts to this team time and time again. Timely goals, huge hits, and physical play.

    C: Dustin Brown

A: Alex Frolov, Anze Kopitar, and Jack Johnson

With all due respect to Derek Armstrong. He’s probably in his last year in LA. If this team is going young, let’s let the young guys take over fully.

The jury is also out on Jarret Stoll, if he only signs a 1 year deal, forget it. If he’s willing to go 3-4 years on his contract, he’s a possibility.

  • Dave K

C – Kopitar. Aside from the fact he’s the team’s best player, he’s well spoken, mature and ready for the role.

    A – Brown. He’s an obvious pick.

A – Armstrong. Yes, he’s a short timer but you gotta have at least one veteran in the leadership group.

  • brianguy

all things considered right NOW, I agree with everyone who said:

    C – Brown
    A – Armstrong
    A – Kopitar
    A – Stoll

but it really comes down to any further acquisitions, and the coach and how he wants to handle the situation. it could end up being something completely different, rotating captaincy or something like that. I also agree with the guy who said after that, you could basically give Army’s A to Johnson.

  • Anonymous

    Captain: Brown

    Assistant: Kopitar
    Assistant: Armstrong
    Assistant: Preising

  • mask0425la

C – Brownie – I can’t believe this guy’s commitment to the Kings. Look at his stats compared to his peers, then look at his salary. He either has a terrible agent or he is truly committed to the Kings.

    A – Army – Longest tenure; age.
    A – Smitty (if signed)

A – Stolly (if Jason Smith is not signed)

    A – Grease (Long Shot)

  • Hemorrhage

“C” Brown – However I can see Army being named

“A” Army (Brown if Army gets the “C”)
    “A” Frolov
    “A” Kopitar

  • DellaNooch

Considering that our leadership is the target of turnover, these are the people I would like to see:

    C – Calder
    A – Zeiler
    A – Dallman
    A – Anthony

    Just kidding of course…

No captain next year, let’s give Kopi, Brown, and JMFJ the A’s and see who emerges…I think it will end up being Brown…but who knows Stoll has been a C before, perhaps he’ll emerge as a leader.

  • cdtkings9614

Brown is the simple choice for the “C”

He doesn’t have to be as vocal as other Captains. Remember Matty.

    Lead by example.

    Stoll
    Army
    and Johnson or Kopitar
    with A’s

  • andre norway

I would give the C to army because of age, leadership and personality, as A I want brown, frolov,jj and kopi.

I hope that giving frolov and A will take him to the next level. Then we will see next season who will be our captain for a looooong time.

  • AmaysnKingsfan

For the C it does have to be some one who could be considered a vet Armstrong is a good canidate but he might be a healthy scracth a lot this year. Frolov is another guy who’s been a round the most maybe it is time for him to take the weight of the team on his shoulders a bit being the oldest most experianced of the kings younger player.

For the A’s I say give it to Brown and Kopi let them get a little leadership roll and see who grows in to the Captain job.

If there is a third A give it to modry if he signs our to another “veteran” who can guide kopi and brown into the future captain position. Even though i don’t really like Blake and don’t thik he is worth 5 mil this is where the team sorely misses him.
