RFAs sign

| | Comments (25) |

The Kings have signed restricted free agents Erik Ersberg, Gabe Gauthier, Matt Moulson and Joe Piskula to contracts for next season. I'll try to get the terms and money for these deals, particularly Ersberg, since he was headed for arbitration. I'd have to guess Ersberg agreed to a two-year contract, but that's just a guess.

UPDATE: Gauthier signed a two-year contract. Ersberg, Moulson and Piskula signed one-year contracts.

No announcement of a Terry Murray hiring yet. I'm doing my best to stay on top of updates here, and for about 23 hours a day, I'm blissfully ignorant of goofy Internet rumors.

Good to hear. Hopefully O'Sullivan is soon to follow. I don't mind Ersberg getting a one-year. Gives him every chance to prove himself to Kings number one goalie, in which case maybe he'll want to stay after the year. I suspect DL is confident Bernier will be ready next year, and that Zatkoff or Quick will be ready to play back-up if Labs isn't up to it.

Thank God they signed Ersberg.
He's the only player on that list I was concerned about. Not too worried about the others.

I was hoping they'd sign Ersberg to a longer term. He seems a hell of a lot more valuable tha Gauthier (who no longer has a future with Kings).

Why sign Gauthier to 2 years and Ersberg to one year?

Bob Bobson said:

Cool, glad to hear they are done with those guys. However the key guys like Patrick O'Sullivan and Jarret Stoll are still missing.

MDelaney said:

I second about Ersberg. He gave us a glimmer of hope at the end of a c**p season. I am on the fence about the others, I need more evidence.

tsaiguy said:

No future?...the guy put up some good numbers in his first year as a pro in the AHL...Not to mention the Kings and/or Ducks do have a interest in having players from Socal on their roster.

O'Sully O'Really said:

Lets lock up these scrubs and string O'Sully along like he's chopped liver. Makes a lot of sense. Watch, we'll do the same to Johnson and Kopitar next and in the meantime someone like Brown feels screwed w/ his contract and demands a trade.

As far as Ersberg, I agree a one year deal is questionable at best. If he tears it up this year, given a chance, his salary demands will baloon next year and he'll move on to greener pastures w/ a long term contract on another team and a very successful career. Such is the Kings history and their fate.

Rich, does it make you feel like Murphy's trying to pull one on you with the rumors about Murray's imminent hiring popping up roughly the instant you go on vacation?

Ron said:

Rich,

Be glad you don't have to read these goofy internet rumors, there are some really retarded ones out there. Glad to see some signings fall into place. Still waiting on a few of the more important ones to get done.

It's not fair to simply blame Lombardi for Erbserg getting a one year deal. There's a pretty good chance Ersberg wanted just one year so he could sign a long term contract after this season. Bernier is likely #1 for years, so it makes perfect sense for Ersberg to showcase his skill set this year and then catch on somewhere else the following season.

So did Ersberg get the 1-way that he wanted, or is it a 2-way?

mrbrett7 said:

They aren't stringing anyone along...good Lord!!! Some people get me so frustrated.

Can it possibly be EASIER to lock up someone like Piskula than it is to lock up someone like O'Sullivan? Gee...naw...not at all...this isn't rocket science!

Piskula, Moulson, Ersberg, Gauthier...here is your contract, take it or leave it.

Stoll, O'Sullivan, these kinds of negotiations can take months...think about it.

What happens if Ersberg tears it up this season and proves to be the real deal.

He'll be unrestricted and some other team will swipe him away for more money.

Just admit it. You're beloved Lombardi might have dropped the ball on this one.

And whats up wth signing Gauthier for 2 years. Players like Lewis, Simmonds, Meckler, and Moller have already passed him on the depth chart.
He'll end up being the next Noah Clarke and wind in manchester for those 2 years.

Hey Rich...one thing I can add...the Kings confirmed that Ersberg was signed to a two-way deal.

Relax boys, I'm sure SUlly and Stolly are getting long term deals. It's not as quick. They're easily more important. I'm stoked about Ersberg and Piskula.

mrbrett - dont get so frustrated, some people just dont get it and probably never will. Others are so gunshy from being Kings fans for so long they are always waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak, even if it never does. Not everybody can have the same hockey acumen as others, and I guess thats why it is so much fun to make fun of them on boards like these. As far as signing Ersberg to a one year deal, he would still be a RFA next season as well, no? And if not, no loss really, because Bernier will be ready along with either Zatkoff or Quick. Goaltending has been the biggest issue for the lifetime of this team, I expect that to change very shortly!

mr brett and jonny: exactly what i was thinking. we already saw what happens when you neither side wants to negotiate (see: blake)... i feel like sully and the kings want to get a solid deal done that works for both sides and avoid any animosity. i won't panic until i hear something straight from the team, the player, or somewhere that doesn't just feast on rumors.

kyle said:

Eric K mr brett and jonny have it right. Easier to lock up the others first, and this lets Dean and Jeff Solomon focus on O'Sullivan. I'm not worried right now, and I think DL's on track. Saw DL and Hextall (who plays a mean floor hockey game by the way) at camp yesterday morning. I like the fact they were watching d-men in development camp themselves and not only relying on reports from the coaching staff.

petey said:

O'Sully O'Really, nobody is stringing nobody along. A player of O'Sullivan's caliber and potential takes longer to sign than these other players that were just signed. Same as Stoll. These two are main parts of this team now, and for the future. These other players they signed are more "wait and see what they can do" type players. That's why one year deals are given.
Brown signed a deal that he was happy with because he wanted long-term stability and WANTED to be with the Kings. He's happy here, why would he want to be traded?
Some people over react too much. Most, if not all, of those people would last a day, two days max as a GM in the NHL.

pray tell, Rich.. What goofy internet rumor????

;)

O'Sully O'Really said:

I'm sure you would max out at three days as GM. I know these things w/ high profile players take longer to negotiate but if you read between the lines talks have barely started. All these other players, most Manchester bound, are easily locked up after your "core" since no one is desparate for them anyway. If someone signs P O'S to a ridiculous offer sheet that Dean won't match, that could hurt the team more than losing a Gauthier.

I just think a more proactive effort (and earlier effort) should be applied to our better players than what I've seen. ----or maybe that's only done w/ players who will be soon on the trading block ala Visnovsky.

Let's see how things play out with Ersberg....He had a nice little run at the end of the season but c'mon, 13 games a season or a career does not make. Let's see what he does with a full season under his belt. He'll be an RFA at the end of this season. With the inconsistant play of Lababs, I'm sure he'll get a fair amount of playing time. We have four very good goalies in the wings, Bernier, Zatkoff, Quick & Taylor (not to mention Rowat). The idea, at least I thought was to bring the kids along slowly. If Ersberg plays out of this world, the Kings can sign him long term. If he falters, then they're stuck with another long term contract with the kids waiting in the wings. The good thing here is that LA has a very bright future with lots of good young Dmen and goalies in the system. We had a very good development camp this week. Things are definitely looking up....

JDM said:

O'Sully O'Really,

One point of contention. You seem sure that talks have not begun with Sully... and thay MAY be true.

However,

In the last week people have griped that DL hadn't been doing anything in terms of hiring a coach.

And lo and behold -

Theys was wrong. (yes, the bad grammar is on purpose)

Turns out that once again, just because we don't hear continuous updates outside of the Kings office, does not mean they are sitting around playing darts.

Your concerns may be valid, but your pessimism belongs only to those of you who choose to be. There is nothing that suggests O'Sullivan is being a really big pain in the A to sign. If you look around the league, only in the last several days are RFA's started to be locked up. Oddly enough, GM's don't really feel the need to rush on resigning players that they can only lose if they choose to let them go. There have been no rumours about Sully like those about Bouwmeester. The Senators have yet to resign their two major RFA's in Vermette and Meszaros. Atlanta only locked up Lehtonen today, and only for a year. Chicago has a slew of RFA's with no contract in place. I don't recall Colorado having signed Svatos. Wideman is reportedly close in Boston, but no contract yet. Leclaire is Columbus, several in Dallas. Detroit can't sign Fillpula without the threat of arbitration. Nor have they locked up their goalie prospect Howard. Bouchard has no contract in Minnesota. Carcillo in Pheonix. I don't think Clowe has signed in San Jose, though I may be behind on that one, I remember they locked up Erhoff.

Aaaaanyways, see the point?

DL isn't slacking, he's right on pace with the rest of the league in terms of RFA's.

And in regards to disaproving of Gauthier so much. I agree that he will never fill a significant or consistent role with the Kings. However, he's young, comes cheap, and is practically a Monarchs veteran... and seeing as how they play games like a team same as the big clubs, it doesn't exactly hurt to have solid AHL players being there with the rookies; regardless of whether or not they make it to the big club.

mrbrett7 said:

As others have stated, this is not that hard to understand.

Sully and Stoll will be locked up in due time. I have said this time and time again, if you want something done fast, go and watch the Lakers and/or a football team, your heart cannot take hockey.
