O'Sullivan update

| | Comments (28) |

Kings players are reporting for medical testing today. Patrick O'Sullivan is not among them. A Kings official said O'Sullivan will not be there today and is not expected to be on the ice for the start of training camp tomorrow morning. I'm seeking further comment from both sides today.

(Apologies for the delay on posting entries and comments today. The hamster in our blog wheel is tired, it seems...)

I don't think it is time to get worried YET.

I hope POS's agent isn't just being a douche-bag.

Get it figured out goddamn it!

LB said:

Relax people, he's going to be signed.
And even if he misses the beginning of the season, it won't affect our non-existing chances of winning the Cup anyway...

I was patient and confident that things would be worked out. This is NOT a good sign. All of you nay-sayers now have the right to say "I told you so".

I am now pushing the proverbial PANIC button.

He's had ONE SEASON.

OK now I'm getting a little less comfortable with the negotiations. Dean, please don't let Anthony be right...get Sully under contract.

My theory is still that POS's agent is holding out for as long as possible, knowing that DL is counting on POS's salary to get him to the cap floor.

I also think that if POS allows this to go on for more than a few days into camp (at the most) then he's an idiot. I actually think that missing any camp for him in his situation is self-destructive. He's proved himself to a certain degree, but not to the level that holding out suggests (especially with a new coach to impress). I'm sure DL is telling the agent that there are plenty of folks who will be happy at their own personal good luck if POS skips camp, not least among them: Richardson, Ellis, Calder, Armstrong, Clune, Simmonds, Moller, Lewis, Parse and Cliche. And off the top of my head, I would bet you DL has a chart on his wall that looks something like this:

Brown/Kopitar/Frolov
Purcell/Stoll/Calder
Moulson/Boyle/Richardson
Ivanans-Clune/Handzus/Ellis

This is getting to be ridiculous. I understand management's desire to use "comparables" in order to make sure future salaries don't get too out of hand, but this isn't something that was a mystery after the season ended. Geez... There are either excuses or silence from each side, without any (at least) outward appearance of a resolution. At this rate, O'Sullivan will have to go to Europe to get some playing time in...

And an interesting aside, but ESPN ranked O'Sullivan as the best fantasy prospect on the roster...interesting, albeit a guess.

Wow, 27 career goals and o'Sullivan is the top prospect?

Quisp - I kind of like your fourth line of Ivanans-Clune/Handzus/Ellis. And I can't remember the last season I thought that.

Hey Rich,

Can you tell us who O'Sullivan's agent is?

Thanks.

Very little information regarding the negotiation of O'Sullivan's contract is in circulation. Let's wait until more information is available before assessing blame for this predicament.

As much as I want Mr. O'Sullivan to be a part of the Kings for a long period of time, I have to admit that signing him to a one-year may be the best possible option right now. If his agent absolutely WILL NOT sign a multi-year deal, then let's see how this next year rides out. If he continues to grow and improve his results, then next summer he can get that $5 million/ 5-year deal that Pommenville just received. Mr. Lombardi may think he is negotiating not only with POS but also with Kopitar and Johnson. But he needs to play from the stance that each individual's needs and desires are different. Each subsequent negotiation will be it's own experience. Or, it should be, if done right.

Where is Sully anyways? I mean we've had sightings of many players outside of TSC, but nothing of him. Aren't he and Kopi friends? Is he in town? In Russia? The moon?

Nick said:

How do the Kings sell this to the season ticket holders..?

Um...lets see we finished tied for last...missed out on Stamkos...traded one of our fan favorites in Visnovsky....let Blake go b/c of the money he was asking for, we are under the cap and now we haven't signed one of our top line players....

Boy, I'm glad I just bought a tv instead of season tickets...

Ahhh, this is ENTERTAINMENT!!!

Watching all of these people twisting in the wind and agonizing over a small bump in the pre-season road brings a smile to my face. Whether he signs or doesn't; stays or doesn't; plays or sits; this is beautiful, soap-opera stuff!!!

can't let the inmates run the asylum. he signs when he signs and if he doesn't, it's sully and his camp's fault, not deano's. why should sully be bigger than the rest of the team?

Is he changing his name to Patrick O'cammelleri?? What is with this guy...Obviously in it for the money!!! This sounds just like the 2 that are now gone (Blake and Cammy). It is clear he will not be here for the long haul. I am quickly losing respect for this guy. He is a great player but he is far from a Zetterberg, Ovechkin, Malkin, Etc. 1 decent season and he thinks he can holdout and miss training camp. F-him, trade him before he becomes a cancer in the locker room..

voice of reason said:

I'm too lazy to find the comment, but I predicted that Sully would become the new whipping boy around here soon enough.

Did Anthony get banned or something? I would expect him to be here ripping DL. Or Sully if he were to suddenly decide Patty is every bit as greedy as Cammy.

Either way this pans out,the only one who really loses is O'Sullivan himself. How many times have we seen hold-outs in any sport, be it basketball, football, or hockey skip training camp because of $$/contract issues, only to finally settle after the season begins and what happens? They get hurt a few games in and are out for a very long time or even the season. Once that happens, the player's stock goes down and they never seem to fully recover what would have or could have been a promising career.

You guys can run me over for this, but I don't blame DL for this. Not one bit. ! season in the league... come one man. It doesnt matter how good you are. You don't get paid for potential.

Silence Dogood said:

This delay is beyond aggravating. So sign him for 1 year. Let's put the best possible team on the ice.

If DL/Solomon are not closing a deal based on "principle", they ought to remember that based on "principle" Samson, of the Old Testament, when his hair grew back and his strength returned, pulled down the pillars of the Philistine temple -- and the result was that the roof fell on Samson's head and killed him.

So sign him already!

Or to paraphrase Mel Brooks from The Producers:

"Don't be schtupid, be a schmarty, sign O'Sully and have a party."

I agree! O'Sullivan has had one good year--one! Even so, no reason to panic. Something could get worked out this weekend.

He won't slip away and explode
into stardom elsewhere...breathing...
everything's gonna' be ok...everything's gonna' be ok...

No Sully, I cry
No Sully, I cry

I remember...etc

But dang,
It's frikkin' camp
and he's still a young,
promising, but "semi-proven" player.

How long's this crap gonna' go on?

Niiiice....a hold-out from a player who hasn't even played 2 full seasons on the worst team in hockey.

It is easy to understand the confusion, Sully is not some washed up veteran in his last years with a nagging injury, so Deano isn't familiar with the process. Hey Sully, just gray your hair, gain some weight and limp alot, they'll pay you Roenick type money in a hearbeat.
