The HD question
The Lakers have 35 games broadcast on FSN this coming season. Guess how many are in high definition? That's right, all of them. As opposed to 10 each for the Kings and Ducks.
In trying to get to the bottom of this, I've yet to find a satisfactory answer. It's not a Kings issue. They're not the ones who make the call on this. So if you want to direct fire, direct it toward FSN. I called them, and they don't have a specific answer as to why there are only 10 games in HD. Their answer is that they're working toward getting all of their televised games in HD during 2009.
It would seem that the issue is cost, as HD telecasts are still relatively expensive to produce. It seems FSN will spend the money for the Lakers but not hockey. Make of that whatever you will...

Even though she's from Colorado, she still freezes in the Staples Center press box but always manages to thaw her fingers in time to make deadline. E-mail Jill at

the only positive I can put on this is, at least the Ducks are as poor off as we are. but that aside, I've let my feelings be known on this.. and I don't even have any HD package or nice TV to watch it yet.
the 2009 answer certainly provides some apparent relief that could make this go away entirely, but the answer for 2008 still seems like "no reason, we're just cheap - too bad"
as others have pointed out, it just doesn't make much sense regionally with probably every-other household in LA-Orange-Ventura owning a hi-def TV. there is probably an even higher percentage than that if you only consider households that watch sports or have cable/satellite.
and our radio affiliate still sucks... embarrasingly so.
The kings have sucked over the past 7 years. This year will be no different. That's the bottom line.
That line from FSN is the same crap they've been pedaling for 3 years now. Every year it's "next year" when all games will be HD.
It's really pathetic when you think about it.
The Kings should cover any additional cost as a service for their fans for suffering through yet another awful season.
ah how embarrassing I mis-spelled (typed) embarrassing. so be it
It won't be long before broadcasting in non-HD will be like broadcasting in black and white. I want everything in HD of course, but I sometimes have to remind myself that when I was growing up, you could watch one game a week on NBC and one on CBC and neither were for my local team (Red Wings) and even then I didn't see a hockey game in color until the 80s (except games I saw in person; those were always in color). Maybe even Gretzky era Kings. And of course by then their uniforms were black and white.
I am surprised the Kings got 10.
horrible!! To watch a sd broadcast on an HDTV looks horrible. I am to the point where I don't bother watching many road games -- the picture quality is bad even by sd standards. I prefer to watch two teams I am neutral about in hd than my team in sd. Then everyone will wonder why the Kings local tv ratings are so bad -- it's the picture quality!!
The quacks getting the cup did nothing for hockey in SoCal. Wait'll the Kings get the Cup. We'll be the Lakers of hockey.
