Johnson out 2-3 months

Jack Johnson will undergo shoulder surgery this week and will miss two or three months. The Kings haven’t announced what the specific injury is yet, but it’s definitely shoulder-related. I don’t believe Johnson will be made available for comment today, but I should be hearing from Terry Murray soon…

    Convenient that we signed Quincey?

  • Model 62

    Ouch.

That’s gonna put his development back by nearly a year and screw up contract extension talks … Not to mention what it does to an already questionable Kings’ defense.

    Oy.

  • Quisp

See? First it was three months, now it’s maybe only two. Things are looking up already!

    Bummer.
Very unfortunate to lose such a valuable player.
He means a lot to LA and to the fans. Hope he recovers fully and quickly.

  • Micah

well we all know what Murray’s gonna say:

“It’s a shoulder injury that will require surgery.”

“He should be back within 2-3 months.”

  • Nick

it seems to me that this sets his development back by 2-3 months, but i’m not a scientist so what do i know?

When I looked at that hit on replay, I felt like it was a set play by the Sharks. If so, JJ fell for it big time. I’ll have to look at it again, but it looked like Grier was looking to take someone’s head off. Or shoulder.

  • John

I don’t know why that play’s not illegal – is there a more vulnerable position to be in, standing still looking up at the puck waiting for it to come down?? The NHL’s always talking about players being vulnerable yada, yada, yada

Well Nick, he rejoins the team in January, say, and works hard to get back up to speed — another couple of weeks — and then we’re pushing into February when he takes up where he left off (after the game and a half of 2008-2009 development he accomplished before the injury). The seasons ends April 12th.

So it’s nearly a lost year of development.

The last time we got a D-man from Detroit, it was Maxim Kuznetsov. Ugggh.

    DAMN!!!!!!!!!

as if the d wasn’t weak enough to begin with. this is going to hurt the team and his development. it’s too bad, because the defense looked a lot better last night.

hickey anyone??? just kidding, probably not a good time for him yet…..

  • Duckhunter

Anze was that the kid that was like 6’8″ and weighed 240 or so, that couldn’t play a lick? lol

  • nykingfan

damn this sucks. Hopefully he makes a quick recovery and returns sometime in January. This obviously hurts his development short term, but there’s still plenty of season left if he comes back then. You just hope it’s not something that weakens the shoulder permanently or is susceptible to being re-injured.

too bad they didn’t keep Hickey around. I also wonder why they aren’t going to give Martinez a shot? He was one of the last cuts before the season.
Welcome back to the lineup Peter Harrold.

I think the Kings had to put a claim in for Quincy before this happened, I could be wrong, it works…we do have one other option, McLaren is on re-entry waivers now, cheap and experienced.

Holy Crap, i just saw that Alexei Cherepanov died during a game. My condolences to his family and the Rangers. He seemed like a good kid and great hockey player that i at one point wanted the Kings to draft.

  • -J

Pardon the french and the off-post comment, but i’m just shocked about his passing.

  • cristobal

Tragic. At least he died doing what he loved, i guess. I pray his family can find the strength to get through this. Just awful.

  • Meg

    HOLY $%^$%##@*!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Drew, get ready for some big minutes buddy. I’ll be rooting for you!

  • Josh

am i the only one who thinks that i watched the worst kings hockey in many years this past weekend? it was pathetic

This is a real blow to the Kings defense, and to Johnson’s development. But hopefully Dean Lombardi can make a smart move and pick up Kyle McClaren off re-entry waivers since San Jose has put him back on the wire. McClaren is a top 4 defenseman on most teams, and would be the Kings #1 even if JJ was healthy. And if claimed, San Jose would have to pay half his salary. Where’s the downside?
