About the ``Murphy'' thing

| | Comments (20) |

I think we all had a bit of fun -- me probably more than I should have -- with the ``Terry Murphy'' thing from last night, but I also wanted to make it clear that David Courtney is a true professional. As I just finished writing to David, I'm well aware of his history as a very well-respected announcer in L.A., and he shouldn't take personal any fun I/we might have had with the momentary slip o' the tongue. Mistakes happen and they're quickly forgotten. For all the Bryzgalovs and Kuznetsovs he's pronounced perfectly over the years, he should get a prize. So, cheers to David...

Rich, I think we all knew that you having some innocent fun.
Can you ask if Quick is number 1 in Manchester?

"Murphy's Law" Mr. Courtney!

You ARE the voice of the Kings, and it's good to see that my unrealistic visions of perfection on your behalf were shifted to reality.

Now, if you can pronounce Corey Perry's name as Corey Fairy tomorrow, than you would return to "GOD" status for me! :)

David has always been great, although the look on Terry's face when he said "Murphy" was classic. I felt bad for both Terry and David. Hopefully they can get together and have a good laugh about it. Go to an LA Avengers game to see how lucky we are to have David.

But someone REALLY needs to tell Nick Nickson that it's ALEC Martinez, not "ALEX."

David is a family friend, and back in the days of the forum, when getting from the cheap seats down to ice level was pleasantly simple we'd often chat afterwards. He was nice enough to show me the Kings locker room where I got to meet Gretzky, Hrudey, Coffey and Robitaille as an 8 year old kid, one of the coolest moments from my childhood. Courtney is an exceptional announcer and a good guy, and it was an amusing mistake.

I didn't take any disrespect from your remarks Rich. I saw it actually as the inner fan in you taking control of the reporter, which was a fun moment considering your journalistic altruism. I think most, if not all of us appreciate those times when something strikes you in whatever way that you are compelled to editorialize.

go kings go

I still say this was an Angels-related slip... the Kings have had (relatively) a lot of Murrays, but the Halos have a Murphy and he probably got tripped up after saying that name a few too many times all summer!

at any rate we appreciate the normally HIGHLY consistent and predictably (good) Courtney, who doesn't get the kind of credit of a Miller or Nickson but every bit as important.

and don't think we Kings fans don't notice when someone OTHER than Courtney mans the PA. it gets very strange when he doesn't, and mistakes are frequent and rapid, as rare as those times are (was 2002 the last time... or maybe even 2005)? both times the Angels made it past the ALDS

I had the privilege of working with David for three years with the LB Ice Dogs. I'm sure he was embarassed by the mistake but I'm also sure he laughed about it later over a beer. Defintely one of the classiest guys in the business.

Boy Hamm-on (GWAR reference)...you seem to piss everybody off at least once. That must make you a GREAT journalist. (wink)

Really though, a kings game at Staples without DC just isn't right, just like a Kings game on TV without BM & JF or radio without NN & DE. If the Kings have any serious tradition, it is in their announcers. We're very fortunate as fans to have that longterm familiarity. Voices breed tradition as much as actions do.

It's all in good fun and I can't imagine David being offended by it. It's not like when Stu Nahan called the Astros the a-holes.

Rich, as long as we're on the subject of pronouncing names, can you tell me whether it's Jarret "Stole" or Jarret "Stall"? Even Bob and Nick can't agree on this one. I always thought it was the former, but Bob says the latter.

Then for extra credit can you tell me whether our former #2 center was Robert "Long", Robert "Lung" or Robert "Lang" (as in gang)? Nick tried out a different version every season.

Dang...now you have me chiming in! In the Kings Live Pre-season special, I thought we put this to rest last year.

I thought it was Teddy Purr-sul not Teddy Purr-SELL! Jimmy said Purr-SELL! Ugh!

David Courtney is by far the best stadium/arena announcer there is....bar none!

anyway, Courtney is very good at what he does, but I know I've pissed him off a couple of times by repeatedly pointing out (to him) that when we (the fans) do as he instructs, and "turn to our player roster card" for the following scratches, changes, additions, etc. --- he ought to consider doing the same. The rosters that he uses, courtesy of the press notes, are generally not in synch with the ones the fans receive on the roster card. This has come up dozens of times over the past few years, and really all he has to do is grab one of the cards so he can see the (mis)information we are given.

Other than that, the guy is a keeper :)

(but what ever happened to Dennis Packer?)

I seem to remember Jim Fox mentioning two brothers or cousins in the NHL who have the same last name but pronounce it differently.. anyone know who they are?

Also, I noticed that while Bob & Jim say "EVEN-ahns" (Ivanans), I've heard a couple Kings players/coaches say "ih-VAH-nis." What up wit dat?

I definitely noticed in our Preseason Opener at Staples vs. Phoenix when David was with the other 1/2 of the team in Kansas City. The fill-in PA announcer was AWFUL.

"And it's a.... Kings..... POOOOOWWWWWWWEEEERRR PLAYYY"

Rich Can you please pass this on to the king players.
Shoot the puck. Plain and simple. Don't worry if the goalie is going to stop the puck or not. Just shoot the puck and go to the front of the net. How much simpler can this get. That's what we all used to do when we played street hockey. And more times than none we at least got to score couple of goals in a game. Specially, on the power play. One more thing. If whenever possible always put a big body in front of the net to screen the goalie, I hope they know that it helps some times. You got Boyle who we all know from last year in the minors that's what he used to do down there. Why have him on the team and not use him on the power play? And, one more thing. Don't play scared. They are making it to easy for the opposing team. The opposition can tell. It’s hard to hide that from your opponent.

I think that's referring to the Kaberle brothers. Frantisek pronounces his last name KaberLAY and Tomas pronounces his KaberLAH.

"And it's a.... Kings..... POOOOOWWWWWWWEEEERRR PLAYYY"

Oh please God tell me they did not say this.

The Michaleks (Milan and Zbynek) also pronounce their names differently.

One is Mi-KAL-ek and the other is Mi-HAL-ek.

In reality it should be a very guttural Mi-KHAL-ek, but Americans have a hard time with that.

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

Jim was referring to the Michalek brothers: Zbynek Michalek (pronounced mih-KHAL-ek) and Milan (pronounced mee-HAH-lehk).

honestly, I think I remember them having the DUCKS announcer last time Courtney couldn't do a Kings game during the regular season. by your description, this sounds just like him.
