Ugh. Not a Green fan, but I'm assuming they are lining up Jack to have the A when Green leaves!
Greene??? Please explain!!!
I like it! Had to go with a dman too & Greene's a stud, young & a vet. Great picks Coach Murray!!!
I'm sure Greene over Stoll was to get a defenseman in the mix. But I wonder why Greene over Johnson...
I think that Greene's "A" goes to Johnson after he re-signs next year.
Matt Greene? I wasn't happy with Stoll but Greene isn't appropriate for the same reasons. Weird.
Guess you had the right trade Rich, just the wrong tradee :)
I know we're all interested to hear the reason for Greene getting the A over a lot of Kings who have been around longer.
And I'm curious, I thought the C and the As were always voted on by the players? I've heard a few teams announce them lately stating that the coaches picked them. Is this new?
I'm not a Green fan. I think he's basically a "placeholder" for when Jack gets it next year!
It's good to have an A on defense and with the 'youth movement' it doesn't make a lot of sense to go with O'Donnel. I'm more surprised it's not Preissing if they wanted to go with a defensemen but I don't know the guy and don't know what he's like in the locker room
Remember, the coach responsible for the selection of the captians of this team has been with all of these players for the same time period.
Greene will be the steal of the Lubo trade. He'll be a fan favorite both for his play on the ice and his attitude. Great pick!
wow Greene ha? That came out of left field....I thought Fro should have gotten it, but this is a bit of a surpirse. I don't see it being a big deal either way.
Greene? Color me shocked.
Thank God it wasn't Armstrong.
Now that Sully is signed, Army and Calder need to find a different team. When Zeiler gets healthy, he should join that list.
It tickles me to watch people who have never spoken to a member of the team, let alone spent a minute in the locker room, demand an explanation regarding the naming of team captains. The management on this team knows infinitely more than everyone on this blog about who the captains should be.
Am I surprised by Greene? Sure. But all things considered I don't know anything about anything.
I get Greene, gotta have a D-man with a letter, and couldn't be happier about Brown and Kopitar getting their recognition. Hopefully in a couple years JMFJ or Hickey will take Green's letter
Reports from Oilers fans, when Greene was dealt to the Kings, was that he had a solid reputation for be a leader in the Oilers dressing room. Giving him an 'A' doesn't shock me in the least.
Greene? That's cool with me, but it is a bit surprising. I thought Jack Johnson would get it for sure if it didn't go to Stoll or Army.
You guys are funny. None of you are in the room with the players, how the H, E, double L would any of you know which players are the real leaders? You're just going off of internet rumors.
I don't understand why anyone would be unhappy if Stoll or Greene worn an A. They're on this team aren't they? If the guys in the room and on the ice respond to them and respect them, why shouldn't they be on the leadership team?
Personally, I'm guessing that the coaching staff selected Greene over Stoll or Army because maybe they wanted an assistant from the back end. They already have two forwards. If I'm surprised, it's that JMFJ wasn't selected, but again, I'm not in the room.
I'm as surprised as everybody else. Let's hope it works out.
I think all 3 of these guys are the TYPE of players I would want in my captain's chair. Skill, Size, Heart, Leadership, Honesty, Commitment & Leadership. That's what your LEADERS should display.
Kopitar is the face of the franchise, Brown is very much the same & his work ethic is something that NEVER comes into questions. When's the last time you heard someone say "Oh man brown takes another shift off"...it just doesnt not happen.
I dont know enough about Green, but for him to get an "A" means that somebody somewhere believes he's a leader & he didn't just get it handed to him. I'm sure he's a leader & will prove along with Stoll that moving Visnovksy wasne't a bad move on DL part. It's about buidling a TEAM and not a side show. Green/Stoll are "key" players that will fit the mold of this growing group.
I don't know about all of you, but this team is going to surpise a lot of people this year & you just watch and see this plan in the next 3 years...your talking about one of the best teams in the West in awhile!
green is a surprise to me as well, but i'm not in the locker room so i can't complain.
This just goes to show we really don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Greene must be a stand up guy with allot of respect in the dressing room.
Go Greene!!
A bit of leadership from the D line it seems...
It's a new team, people. New coach, new players, and hopefully a new "culture" that we've heard about again and again. If Matt Greene has established himself as a leader and a stand up guy in the last 2 weeks, then I'd rather have those traits supported than give the letters out on seniority.
Let's face it. O'Donnell, Armstrong, Handzus, and others are going to be good leaders with or without a letter. Ownership of this team belongs with the young core and I'm excited about it.
Maybe he's a better d-man than we previously thought. He had to bring something to the table to get a letter. I thinks that great, he's obviously impressed TM in a manner that represents his style.
Brownie as Captain, Kopitar as Alternate, are great choices. Matt Greene is a shocker... I would have thought Armstrong. Se la vi...
For an explanation on Greene, just watch the video interview here:
http://kings.nhl.com/index.html
Brown and Kopi aren't surprised.
Congrats to Brownie and Kopitar! RE: Greene impressive most impressive the Force must be strong in this one....
GO KINGS!
voice of reason said: “It tickles me to watch people…demand an explanation regarding the naming of team captains.”
You’re so right. So is Duracell battery. We should never question what management is doing. Their decisions are obviously always correct. Fans should keep their mouths shut and never say a dissenting word. Of course, if a fan were to spend a minute or two in the locker room, then maybe we can speak up. But if that were the case, then we probably would be a player and not a fan. I’m ashamed of myself. Thank you for pointing out how ridiculous we are all being!
…well, one little thing if I may…
I’d think an alternate captain would, at the very least, have played one game with the team he’s representing. Call me crazy. I’m not saying Greene isn’t a leader or capable. What I am saying is there are other guys MORE deserving. And I don’t need to be in the locker room to figure that out!
It is just good to have 5 or 6 true candidates for the 'A's.
Does Greene have a Kings tattoo on his ass? It shouldve went to Jack Johnson..
Myself i think these are great choices.Does anyone happen to remember last years? Thank`s Rich!
the notion that anyone outside the team or coaching staff has an idea of who the more deserving choices might be is downright laughable.
The guy who had the C on his chest when Anaheim won a cup hadn't played a game with the team when he was named captain and that seemed to work out just fine.
It's one thing to second guess line combos and whatnot, but the selection of captains is decided by circumstances and actions that we as fans do not get to see.
"Does anyone happen to remember last years?"
Ahh, how can you forget Scott Thornton being named an alternate captain, then sitting out a bunch of games to start the season! It was at that point I stopped supporting Crawford.
I for one think its great that Greene impressed enough to be given an A. Murray has no former ties to this club, only really to Handsuz to whom he gave nothing. I think having Greene as an A also reinforces that this is a new team. No ties to the last few years. Greene has always been hailed as a leader, and I'd much rather Murray choose an alternate based objectively on who has been effective and vocal with the team thus far rather than base his decision purely off of things he wasn't here to experience. This is a good way to shake the team up some.
As people have mentioned, Army and Handsuz and Stoll will continue to lead. Frolov has and will continue to be a lead by example guy. Johnson isn't going to whimper and cry and stop being vocal, not getting an A won't change the type of player he is and wants to become. Let's also not forget Doughty, who is already obviously a very vocal player, as is Boyle. These guys will also find their voice with the team throughout the season.
We are seeing another of DL's plans quietly come to fruition here, to build a team of winners and leaders. The fact that Kopi, Brown, Army and possibly Handsuz and Stoll and Greene are all captain material for the team in their own way; the fact that there are so many candidates for an A and the fact that Johnson, Doughty, Hickey, Moller and others all have captain potential, have been captain or demonstrate the desire and ability to lead is simply an amazing team. When you have a team of leaders, you have a team of unselfish people who want others around to succeed and to help them do it... This sounds eerily (and wonderfully) similar to the vein of the Red Wings.
Basically, stop whining that your particular guy didn't get an A and be thrilled that DL has stocked this team with leadership/team mentality players. That intangible can and will only help us win games. It will keep us motivated when down by two early in a game. It will help with that extra boost when down by a goal with a minute to play and an empty net on our side of the ice. It will help the young guys stay positive when the inevitable mistakes happen. It will help keep this team together.
What's the problem?
Having been down at ice level for warm-ups during two of the pre-season games at Staples, I was totally impressed with Matt Greens' on-ice presence. He was working very hard, seeming to take a leadership role and I told my buddy that he was bucking for a C or an A............
Not surprised at all about Greene or by the number of people who know nothing chiming in negatively about it.
Here's something you might not know about him- as a junior he was captain of one of the premier NCAA programs, which he led all the way to the national championship game (they lost though)

As an outsider, i would have thought Kopitar was the guy to be the captain. It would leave Brown free to lead by example, not with words, looks, and attitude. But that said, its in no way critical of the decision. Two of Taylors mid first rounders as the captain and alternate. Good luck to Greene. Hopefully it absorbs him completely to the LA cause and helps him cut any ties he would have still felt towards Edmonton.
Things are beginning to settle down, and finally beginning to resemble a true rebuilding of the Kings mentality. Lets hope AEG keeps their toxic tentacles out of the mix.
cheers
Has nodody around here seen Greene play???! He's precisely the type of player we need to lead the kids by example. Mark my words, he will be a fan favorite in no time.
Greene has a lot more experience and is likely to play a lot. Johnson doesn't need to be talking to referees yet, Greene either really. Could have been O'Donnell just as well, but he hasn't been here long enough.
It's a wise choice. I wouldn't count Greene out in the future either. He's a young kid that's been deep in the playoffs already.
Matt Greene:
Defense
Born May 13 1983 -- Grand Ledge, MI
Height 6.03 -- Weight 224 -- Shoots R
He's only 25, perfect.
JDM said a lot of very true things, and even cristobal:
