Final cuts made

| | Comments (35) |

The Kings have made their final preseason cuts:

Assigned to Manchester (AHL):
Alec Martinez - D
Teddy Purcell - RW
Jonathan Quick - G
Kevin Westgarth - RW

Returned to Junior Team:
Thomas Hickey - D (WHL)

Placed on Injured Reserve list:
Marc-Andre Cliche (shoulder)
Rich Clune (chest)

That actually takes the roster down to 22, and the day's big winners are...Wayne Simmonds and Oscar Moller, who both stand to make the opening-night roster. The Kings haven't officially announced the season-opening roster, and probably won't until late Wednesday morning, but barring changes, this is it...

Does this mean POS is close to signing?

surprising to see Purcell cut in the end, but congrats to Moller and Simmonds, who must have definitely earned their spots. no big surprises on D or in goal... i can't wait to watch hockey again, no matter what happens.

Given the way that Ersberg played at the end of last season, I think it only makes sense to give him the nod. I just hope he can get back to that level if and when Labarbera starts to struggle because I am so sick of this goaltending revolving door.

Certainly seems like there just might be some movement with Patio...

I had a feeling Purcell didn't do much...My only question is who sits...?

Brown-Kopitar-Moller
Frolov-Stoll-Moulson
Simmonds-Handzus-Richardson
Ivanans-Boyle-Armstrong/Calder

One of Calder or Army has to be the odd man out now.

Wow, good for Moller and Simmonds.

That is a bit of a bummer about Purcell. I hope he finds his game again in the AHL. Maybe he's just a slow starter.

Too bad FSN or Prime Ticket don't televise any Monarch games.

Kngcussion said:

Well it still surprises me, even though I expected Purcell to get sent down. I guess this means that one of Moller or Simmonds will get sent down when or if O'Sullivan signs.

Nick said:

Fiveholio it could mean several things-

POS signing, planned waiver pick up, trade, signing of some left over free agent (hedican, murray), or a call up of somebody sent down earlier (not as likely)

I'll hope for the POS signing.

Neither is Simmonds

Im suprised for Simmonds but glad that he'll get a shot early in the year. So I noticed there is only a 22 man final roster but the minimum is 23 so what gives?

I have to say, it would be pretty cool to be a Kings fans living in New Hampshire. It would be a blast to go to those games.

Well, in the long run, few surprises here. Especially after Rich evaluated whom he thought would stay, get sent back to Juniors and down to AHL.

Expect that Doughty will take #8 now. Boyle will probably grab the #22 that he wore last season for a few Kings games. Harrold back to #5. What Moulson, Moller & Simmonds take is anyone's guess. I always thought #9 was cool and has been available for awhile (with Pushkarev the last to wear it, I believe).

Then again, Moulson, Moller & Simmonds may stick to their high training camp #'s. But if you make the Opening Night roster...go get a low veteran #. Drive it like you stole it, Rickie Bobby.

The minium is 23, we are down to 22 so they must be planning for when POS signs. Glad to see Moller and Simmonds make it, i really didn't see the point of having Ivanans and Westgarth filling the same role on the same line, Simmonds showed in the pre season he was willing to drop the gloves and stand up for players, though he rarely got the best of the other guy.

The numbers should be interesting. Moulson used 28 last year with the Kings and Moller wore 28 in juniors. The problem with this picture is that Stoll is now #28. Should be interesting. I believe Simmonds usually wears 17 (he's worn 16, 17 and 34 in his career I believe).

OK, I was wrong about Purcell.

Should be quite the team in Manchester.

I sure would feel much more comfortable if POS was around. With what we have to work with, POS looks like a seasoned veteran. We are going to have one Greenhorn on every offensive line, and one Greenhorn on each of the top two defensive pairings...OUCH!!!! Yes I still consider JJ a rookie.

Can someone explain to me why Cliche and Clune are on Injured reserve. Did they both make the team, or do you have to keep them up, if they get injured with the big boys? Insurance reasons?

Congrats to all the young men who fought hard, for a chance to live their dreams.

By my calculations, the active roster consists of 22 players and is about $250,000 under the cap floor. This means they cannot ice that team in a regular season game.

Very interesting...

Two seasons ago, POS was sent down, worked his butt off, got the call, and didn't look back. Purcell is certainly in as good a position as POS was at that time. He's certainly bummed, but this is not a bad thing for him. He will go down and continue to put up huge numbers, and wait for the inevitable injury.

Also, who knows what the plan for Moller is. Maybe they're just giving him his nine games.

The 22 players thing certainly does sound like a good sign re POS. Fingers crossed there.

Of course, there will be people who take this as a knock against Purcell. I choose to look at it as a remarkable victory for Moller and Simmonds, who (even if it's only for a few games) have arrived way ahead of schedule. This is a big deal for Kings fans any way you look at it.

Don't be so sure that Moller will go back to juniors when POS signs. That will have more to do with Moller and what he does in the mean time. Moller might be the odd man out, but it could also be Kyle Calder.

As far as who the healthy scratches are, I think we'll see Ivanans dressed when his attributes are needed, and scratched when they're not. Who the other scratched forward is (assuming no injuries), I guess that depends on who isn't playing well.

i'm gonna hope that Sully is that 23rd spot and that we have something in the works to get him signed.

"anthony said:

i'm gonna assume you meant "Moller IS no Sully"... and you're right. i don't think anyone is expecting that from him. having said that...

i hope Moulson gets that spot on the first line to start, even if Sully returns. Moulson had a strong preseason, it'd be interesting to see what he could do with two guys as good as Brown and Kopi, and Sully meshed very well with Frolov last year. after ten games (when we demote Simmonds and/or Moller), go ahead and move Sully up; by that time he should be close to where he was last year in terms of conditioning and comfort with the team.

Hey Rich and fellow Kings,

Hickey got sent to Jr., why there and not AHL. Is this like being sent to AA opposed to AAA (AHL). Can you think of it that way, and if so, does that mean Hickey has a lot of work to do before he's ready for the NHL if ever.

Thanks. can't wait to see the youngsters become men this year. I think Terry is going to do really well (not in W and L) but in clearly building a team and individual talent.

Wow, young team!

At least they'll be fast and fun to watch.

I imagine that Ivanans, Boyle, Armstrong, or Calder will be doing the sitting. Boyle is the youngest of that bunch and has the most offensive upside, so he'll probably sit the least.

Simmonds and Moller are too young to sit, and Moller will probably only stay up for 10 games before he goes back to Junior.

Simmonds will probably try and be the 3rd line tough guy, middleweight.

Purcell comes up if the Kings need scoring, or if Moulson stinks it up.

txkingsfan said:

anyone (Anthony) see that Alzner got send down to the AHL today? And in regards to Moeller not being Sully .. I agree. He may actually be better than Sully! He's faster, skates better, and is a few years younger! Sully may have just made the worst strategic move next to Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid! :)

Ciccarelli Author Profile Page said:

Stew,

Hickey is not old enough for the AHL. Players have to be 20 if they come from the CHL. The rule is different for euros depending on whether they've played in the CHL before being drafted by the Kings.

Txkingsfan, nice catch on Alzner demotion!

Roger said:

Now I am sure the kings are close to signing O'Sullivan. And I predict that he will be in the line up on opening day.

Hm, can Boyle play the wing? Seems like he is better suited on the third line. I would put Boyle with Handzus and Simmonds, and have our fourth line be Richardson-Armstrong-Calder/Ivanans.

Kodi08 said:

Stew-

It has nothing to do with the quality of Hickey but the rules signed off by the CHL and the NHL about age. If a player is part of the CHL he may not play with the AHL until he is 20 years of age (or after he finishes his 19 year old season).

Mike said:

I was wrong, we are over the cap floor because the three players in the IR count towards the cap.

Still, carrying 22 leaves the Kings space to add a player via signing, trade or waiver wire pickup.

petey Author Profile Page said:

Stew, the rule is also if they complete 4 years of junior hockey, they can play in the AHL. It will be that way with Tavares. This is his 4th year of junior hockey, so he will be eligible to play in the AHL next season, even though he won't be 20 years old.
The CHL/NHL rule is, you have to be 20 years old, or have 4 full years of junior hockey.

ryan oliver Author Profile Page said:

I have a question for all you cap geniuses. If Handzus or Stoll get hurt and put on IR, will they be under the cap floor and unable to ice a team? Just a thought since we are so close to the floor.

Petey, John Tavares will never see the AHL...

Ciccarelli, Petey, and Kodi08,

Thanks guys for the help with where Hickey landed and why!!

DellaNooch Author Profile Page said:

Ryan Oliver - When a player is put on IR, the salary still counts against the cap, but the team can spent over the max cap by the amount of that IR player's salary. So the injured players help us meet the cap and still give us the 15 million extra room that we will not spend this season.
