Hockey world mourns loss

| | Comments (9) |

I know this isn't a Kings story, but it is a sad story from the hockey world. The Rangers' top prosect Alexei Cherepanov, 19, died of an apparent heart attack during a game in the KSL outside of Moscow last night. You might not have heard of Cherepanov, but he was certainly expected to have a lengthy and successful NHL career. Click here to read the story from ESPN.

Very very tragic. I really feel for his family, and Jaromir Jagr..who is playing in the KHL and a teammate of Cherepanov.
We all know Cherepanov, along with Voracek and Alzner - I remember when we were all speculating about the '07 Draft. Alexei would end up dropping down to 17th overall, but it worked out for him because he was selected by the Rangers where his idol(Jagr) played.

A real tragedy about Cherepanov. The Kings took a good look at this kid if you remember and he was picked by a few mock drafts to be going to LA. Evidently Jagr and Pavel Rosa were sitting next to him chatting when he collapsed. Our condolences to the Rangers, their fans and the family of Alexei Cherepanov. He was a good kid with a lot of potential. Such a tragic loss at such a young age.

If true, why on earth would a designated ambulance leave the arena to go somewhere else? That's the kind of preventable bulls*^t that really pisses me off. Sounds like the kid's heart could have been revived had their been the proper equipment available.

Ya know, I'll never forget watching the '07 draft and listening to Pierre Maguire lambaste every team that was passing on this kid because of the transfer agreement situation.

He kept saying, this kid is something special and some team's going to get a Top-5 talent when they pick this guy... He was crazy about this kid's talent, and now sadly, we'll never get to see what he was talking about.

I've read some reports out of Russia that this may have been caused by a collision with Jagr or another team mate during a line change. Truly unfortunate loss.

Unfortunately, in most cases of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes, there is only a small chance of survival even with immediate and appropriate medical care, but even still, there is absolutely no excuse for not having that kind of equipment on hand, especially in a league that pays it's top players so much money.

Just incredibly tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the young man's family.

No excuse for not having the proper equipment on hand to at least give the kid a chance of survival. They may pay a lot of $$ over there, but there are other things players should consider.
Lets hope the lesson is learned from this tragedy.
