More on Quincey

| | Comments (28) |

Since Kyle Quincey has played only six NHL games, it's impossible to evaluate him on that level, but Quincey played 66 games with Grand Rapids of the AHL last season and totaled five goals, 15 assists and 149 penalty minutes. That should give a pretty fair indication as to what type of player he is. Quincey actually played for the Red Wings in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series, due to injuries.

What about Peter Harrold, JoE Piskula, Davis Drewiske, Drew Bagnall, Josh Kidd, and Voynov. Doesn't DL have any confidence in these players.
He brought them to this organization. He signed to contracts. He braggs about how deep the organization is at the defense position.
Now that a player goes down, instead of looking at his own team, he looks elsewhere. How shameful. A direct spit in the face at those players.
TWO MORE YEARS!!!
TWO MORE YEARS!!!

dont worry about it anthony

Those players need more time to develop. No need to rush them up here.

My dad and brothers are all wings fans, and they say Quincey is defensive-minded, big but quick, and they're pissed that he's gone. The Johnson injury is a bad, bad thing, but Quincey is a good, good pick-up.

In response to the comments on the other post regarding "what about Harrold"/"doesn't DL have faith in any of these prospects?"...

Harrold is a slightly offensive-minded guy. Quincey is not. If you look at our prospects on D, the ones closer to being ready (Martinez, Hickey) are offensive puck movers. The defense-first guys (Teubert) are farther off. Therefore, Quincey's skill set AT THIS LEVEL OF PROSPECT is something we need, whether Johnson gets hurt or not.

In other words, DL is doing his job.

Anthony,

For all we know, Harrold will play in the next game and Quincy will be the 7th guy. I think that it's better to claim a young d-man to give us another option instead of calling up someone from Manchester that won't even play on the team.

Rick said:

I agree with Anthony.
Competition is great. But this is ridiculous.
Lombardi has more than enough capable defensemen in the system. Instead of going after a player thats being waived, he should first look from within.
What happened to that theory he often brings up.

anthony said:

Thank you Rick.
You hit the hammer on the nail.
DL preaches about building from within, but when a player goes down, he looks to other teams for help.
What a joke he is. His theory is starting to wear thin.

Marc Nathan said:

Pro-Quincey here. Much rather have a guy who just missed making a 1st place club than a guy who wasn't ready to make a 28th place club. If this kid pans out, he's only going to add to the youth movement on defense, when guys like O'Donnell and Gauthier are distant memories. If he doesn't pan out, no harm, no foul.

"His theory is starting to wear thin."

Starting to? LOL! For you it's been worn out for a long time.

Clearly Lombardi is doing what every GM would do in this situation. It's an obvious good move. Insurance is a good thing. Unfortunately, it's too little too late in terms of having a properly balanced team.

Rick and Anthony,
Breathe, it's another young defenseman, that is probably more NHL ready that most we have right now. We knew this would be a tough season going in. If not for an iffy call or two last night, we would be 1-1 right now. They played better last night than the night before. Heck almost better than being 2-0 is that the Quacks are 0-2 too! Sucks that JJ is down, but good we were able to pick up a replacement.

Not all players that are "waived" suck. They were probably just trying to get him back to the minors. Sounds more like a steal to me.

Rick/Anthony --

Yes, "you hit the hammer on the nail." But, see, what you need to do is take the hammer and use that to hit the nail on the head.

Picking up Quincey is a good move. He's not on waivers because he sucks. He's on waivers because the Wings have too many defensemen, they have cap issues, and have to make moves they wouldn't ordinarily want to make.

You guys have worked yourselves up into such a froth over how terrible DL is that you can't see the forest for the trees.

Marc Nathan said:

P.S. Rich... Get a quote from O'Sullivan. They were teammates in Juniors... two seasons.

Micah said:

I tend to believe that the players down in the AHL and lower are not ready for the NHL, so why rush them?

Quincey seems like a "blocked prospect" being in Detroit, and therefore is more of an NHL-ready type player to share time with Harrold.

DL-bashers are just looking for some reason to criticize him, and this is it. Who cares. I don't really care either way, and I would think that their opinions are just that: opinion. Everybody is entitled to their own.

We should all hope that the people who are paid the big bucks to make decisions for the Kings know a little more about the players than we do. That's my opinion.

CiscoC said:

Due to the way waivers work, DL had probably claimed Quincey off waivers before Jack's injury.

Quisp,

If you were in the minors, busting your but for a shot at the NHL- would you not be pissed. That your GM looked somewhere else for help.

Anthony says something not very constructive, there's something shocking.

tell me Anthony, are you the same "Anthony" who got dumped (bleeped) on the air last night on KINGS TALK? pretty much the whole question / comment, and the first 5 or 10 seconds of Nickson and Evans' responses were never even heard on the air, presumably because the caller Anthony said something obviously questionable / offensive. then we, the listeners, were left wondering who in the world (what player) they were talking about. all the him's and he's didn't exactly clue us in.

very impressive...

The success of his draft picks clearly shows that Lombardi's player evaulation skills are outstanding. His player evaluation skills are very good. Moller, Simmons, Doughty, the Russian kids, Hickey looks like a player--even the lower picks like Cameron and King are putting up big numbers.

Outstanding does not equal perfect. Never did, never will.

For this deal, Look at what the Red Wing fans say about this pick up; they know the player best. Quisp should know, and he says the RW fans are not happy campers. So looks good for the moment. If not, he's like Ellis, someone else can have him.

Dean grabbed a young stay at home defenseman with some promise more advanced then our other prospects--something we need now. A little depth never hurt anyone. We'll see how he plays.

On general rants, I knew this team was going to struggle with so many young players. Believe I should should have patience with that. Bringing in free agent veterans does not build you a team. Agree with that. But being 0-2 with a major player injured already, that still sucks.

Quincey was going to be claimed by someone for sure. He was caught in a CBA crunch on a very deep team. As already stated, he was probably claimed before JJ was injured.

I think DL should have gone after KM, SJ would have given him up for Future Considerations, and he would have been a good fit in TM's defensive scheme.

Read on a Detroit fan board that Quincey was moved b/c Detroit needed to clear cap space for Lilja and Cheli. Apparently Detroit based this strictly on Lilja and Cheli being better right now, as well as a few other prospects. Basically, the kid could have upside but regardless the Wings couldn't afford to keep him, but most likely would have if they weren't right up against the cap. Wings are looking to repeat, Holland said they have a one-year window to do so, someone had to go and Quincey was it. Read he was #10 on the Wing's depth chart, but given this team's d, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Cheli, Lebda, even Lilja, #10 isn't the same #10 is it is on the Kings.

Ultimately a bad situation for the Kings, but I'm real pleased DL acted as quickly as he could to make the best of it.

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

Oh, yeah, I'm sure Quincey was claimed before last night. DL's just doing what he does. The Red Wings situation with their D has been brewing for a month or so, and I believe I mentioned a few weeks back that DL should be (and obviously would be) looking at picking up whoever the Wings were looking to unload.

Anthony -

as far as, "if I were in the minors, busting my ass, would I not be pissed?" What you're missing here is that each prospect has his "homework." He comes to camp, he gets feedback from the staff, he gets his assignment and goes and works his ass off. I don't know what specifically was said to each prospect, but I would be surprised if any of them were told, "you should be on this team right now but we don't have room, so as soon as there is an injury we'll call you up." EVERYONE has something they're supposed to be working on, and when they do it, THAT'S (ideally) when they get their reward. As a prospect, I would have to trust that I would be called up when I'm ready. I wouldn't want my understanding with the coaching staff to be undermined in either direction (either calling me up too soon, or NOT calling me up after I've done what they asked me to do).

All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Martinez soon. Not quite yet, but before Johnson comes back.

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

Oops. Just watched the Terry Murray interview on the Kings site. He says Quincey was picked up as a result of the Johnson injury.

-J Author Profile Page said:

It makes sense it was in response to Jonhson's injury since a player picked up off of waivers has to remain with the big club- if the Kings want to send Quincey to Man, he has to go through waiver's again. It could be a try-out in someways- play him a couple of games, see how he does, if he makes it great, if not, it's cost you almost nothing, and then you call up one of the boys from Manchester.

It's quite hilarious to see some people are trying to make a bid deal about this being a bad thing without even knowing one thing about this kid or the circumstances of his acquisition.

Ziggy Author Profile Page said:

Here is how I see this move playing out. Quincey covers the hole from the injury to JJ. Obviously Quincey is nowhere near JJ's skill level but the Kings have low expectations for the season so not the end of the world.

Near term(

Martinez comes back in 2-3 months and plays consistently as a 3rd D pair. He and Quincey proceed to play well and Gauthier can finally be dumped. Gauthier is the weak link. Seriously, this guy adds nothing to the team and is just eating minutes until the team is comfortable with Martinez.

Before JJ returns:

Greene Preissing
Doughty SOD
Quincey Martinez Harrold

When JJ comes back, the defense sends down Harrold and the Kings can finally have a respectable D corps with

Greene JJ
Doughty Odonnell
Preissing Martinez Quincey

Those three will interchange taking days off with Preissing only sitting if he struggles.

Nothing against Quincey, but this is part of Lombardi's errors this offseason. We knew that even without injury the defense would be a challenge. As pointed out for months, the ability to gain possession and turn the puck up ice with accurate and crisp passing is handicapped. I don't understand why he'd go after Quincey as the answer to this problem. I can understand claiming him because you like his game and age and want to bring him in, but in response to this mini-crisis it doesn't make sense. The game didn't change much after Johnson went out and I think one of the Manchester kids could have deputized until a veteran was found to fill the void. We've got the trade bait and the cap room to properly deal with this. C'mon Dean. Take your time and handle it.
