Murray discusses the lines
Here's what Terry Murray said today about everyone's favorite topic, the Kings' line pairings up top...
Question: Are you happy with what you're seeing from the O'Sullivan-Stoll-Moller line?
MURRAY: ``Yeah. They've gotten better each game. I like the way Stoll has picked his game up. He had a pretty good training camp. He was really skating and putting a lot of pressure on the opposition through his speeed, and now he seems to carry the puck more often and he's trying to do something with the puck on his stick. I like that attitude a lot. And as a result, we're seeing that line have some success now. O'Sullivan is a very gifted player and Moller seems to be more comfortable every day, making plays. He had a great goal that was scored the other night against Colorado. It was just a great transition, going to the net, three of them, and he made a strong play to end up getting the puck to the net. So everything is going pretty good with that line.''
Question: So you don't see any reason to move O'Sullivan to the first line?
MURRAY: ``Not right now. I'm pretty aware, through conversation only, of what that line did last year. I have tried it. I have put (O'Sullivan) up on the line. He's had several shifts in the last couple games there, but it's also important to have good balance in your lineup. When you come down to the final half of the third period and you're looking for something big to happen, you can make that change, but right now I like the way the Stoll line is setting up.''

In other words, when we're trailing in the 3rd period, then i"ll insertt POS on the top line where he should've been in the first place. What's wrong with building a lead first.
That's brilliant coaching. Real brilliant.
Instead of inserting POS from the get go to help build a possible lead in a game, I'll wait until time runs out. No use starting him with Kopi and Brown.
Doesn't this strike any of you guys as odd.
Anthony, WHO ARE YOU? You should Apply for a JOB since you know how to RUN 3rd period games.
Rich, is there any way for me to block out certain peoples posts so I dont have to read them?
Anthony,
No it doesn't. It strikes me that a professional hockey coach, who watches and works with his players every day, and understands the game of hockey *as a whole*, sees the situation differently than you, an armchair coach who (I believe) doesn't even go to games regularly. If the "top line" of Brown, Kopitar and Moulson (or whomever) isn't producing, then perhaps *they* need to step up their game, instead of hanging back and waiting for O'Sullivan to ride in on his white horse and save the day.
I agree with Anthony. Of course, none of us are NHL coaches, but I much rather get a lead and then experiment rather than experiment and then hope for a goal when you're already down. Why is it so difficult to see the logic in that? Balancing the lines is good and important, but not to the extent that you're digging yourself out of a hole, which we've seen the last few games.
Despite the tone, I have to agree with Anthony. Thus far, Kopitar and Brown haven't played to their potential. If Sully is able to get them going early, put him on their line. Its good for their confidence and its good for team.
Why equate not scoring with not playing to potential? The other teams probably throw out their best defenders against Kopitar and Brown, thus making it harder for Kopitar and Brown to score. And by "best" I mean their best defenseman and their best checking forwards.
Probable coaching notes when teams play the Kings begin something like this:
1. Cover Kopitar and Brown--everybody must help. Back check hard.
The Kopitar\Brown\whoeever line will get its points. They play hard. Give them time.
Don’t be so short sighted people! Even though winning would be great we are best served by building talent. By playing POS on the 1st line last year has most certainly helped him become what is today. If we can get another player to develop into what POS has become by playing them on the top line then we will become even stronger when it counts. In my opinion all the potential talent should get a chance to play on that top line. We may never have another year that we can afford to do this. Imagine if Moller, Simmonds and Boyle all developed like POS. This year is a luxury and we need to take advantage of it. In the coming years when it all counts, POS will be on the top line and everyone knows it.
You need balance in all 4 line and if keeping POS on 2nd line helps balance , and he helps players on his line develop its all good. Having POS on the top line isnt gonna suddenly wins us games by scoring 5-10 goals a game.
our biggest liability over the last few years has been a solid back end from the goalie to the D-Men. If Labs can pull it all together this year, fine. Otherwise we got Bernier waiting in the wings to step up. The Defence is where we need to concentrate on, i have been impressed with the D-system im place on the PK, i hope to see this continue as well. im sad that JJohnson was injured, his development was crucial this season, Doughty has been a phenom on D this year, this kid plays with the poise of a 35yr old D Veteran. I say let the kids play, never had we had this many kids on the cusp of breaking into the NHL at one time on this team. It very early and the line will shake out sooner or later.
RL 77 has made some good points. But it looks, right now at least, that Moller Simmonds and Boyle have much more upside than Moulson with 3-5 years more time to reach it.
I'd like to see the best players on our team at their full potential, showing the kids what the possibilities are, instead of 2 all stars struggling with one average forward, one average defenseman, and a future all-star who's only 18 with 5 games under his belt. If we've got an all-star line, even one, play them together and let the others feed off their success. Plus, we might not have been trailing in every game so far.
I'd be interested to know who Kings fans would rather have as coach: Anthony or Crawford?
If I was going to put anyone on the top line it would be Moller. Let him have some quality "Mentoring" time with the big boys like Sully did last year. I agree with some of you above and spreading the lines out.
I would suggest that Brown and Kopitar have underachieved in their production and performance this season so far. While O'Sullivan has been the Kings best forward playing with a rookie and very limited FA signing in Stoll. The solution to Browns and Kopitars funk is to play the best players together that have prooven chemistry and that can produce in order to win, I hope this is the goal of Murray and company. Not to lose with "balanced" lines. So far Murrays experiment has failed and will continue meanwhile we are mathematically going to be out of the playoffs ALREADY!
In order to make the playoffs you have to win 3 out of every 5 games.I'm sure all of you know this.
