Sorting out the goalies
The Kings started training camp with eight goalies, an astounding number. Here's how they have sorted out, at least for now:
KINGS: Jason LaBarbera and Erik Ersberg
MANCHESTER (AHL): Jonathan Bernier and Jonathan Quick
READING (ECHL): Danny Taylor
ONTARIO (ECHL): Jeff Zatkoff
JUNIOR: Linden Rowat (Regina) and Martin Jones (Calgary)
In other minor-league news, forward Justin Azevedo signed a one-year contract and will play with Manchester, as will defenseman Andrew Campbell, who signed an amateur-tryout agreement.

J.P. Hoornstra writes about NHL and IHL hockey for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. He welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.

Jill Painter joined the Daily News in 2000 and during the last eight years she's covered the Dodgers, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Kings, golf and everything in between. Even though she's from Colorado, she still freezes in the Staples Center press box but always manages to thaw her fingers in time to make deadline. E-mail Jill at

Well, Zaktoff is probably the most interesting one of these assignments, as he gets to be the Reigns first goaltender.
So the Kings are still affiliated with Manchester?
I thought the Kings were not going to have Reading as an affilate anymore..I thought Toronto took over
DL has already said that Bernier will be geting the bulk of the playing time in Manchester...where does that leave Quick?
I understand the logjam, but it amazes me that Zatkoff will play in the ECHL. Statistically he seemed to be dominating in Manchester last year. While this is a good problem to have, long term we need to have our prospects playing against players who are equal or better than themselves. Uhh, the Kings have too many good GK prospects?
You're right on Jet, it's nice to have such a problem for once...possibly ever.
Readings main affiliation is with the Leafs, the Kings are now just a secondary affiliate for them. That's probably one reason they are sending Taylor there rather than Zatkoff. They'll have more control over who starts in Ontario than they will with Reading. Whenever you hear DL talk about the goalies he rarely mentions Taylor so take that for what it's worth.
jet,
Having your goaltending prospect playing tons of minutes in the ECHL is not a bad thing. It seemed to work well enough for Quick last season. There will probably be some musical chairs with the goalies through out the season anyway.
Power - I understand what you are saying, I just recall long Beach games where slapshots looked like they were coming in at 80 miles per hour and there were few backhand shots with any umph. Hopefully, he can prove that he needs to be moved up this year.
