Third-round pick unhappy?
Now that the Kings have resolved Patrick O'Sullivan's contract situation and Anze Kopitar's contract situation, there's...Andrew Campbell's contract situation?
Campbell, who had signed an amateur-tryout agreement with Manchester, is back with his junior team in Sault Ste. Marie until, his agent said, he gets ``a contract that compensates him fairly.''
The Kings took Campbell, a 20-year-old defenseman, with the 74th overall pick in the third round. He had 13 goals, 22 assists and 64 penalty minutes in 68 games last season with Sault Ste. Marie. In the interview with the Sault Star newspaper, his agent, Kyle Dubas, also said, ``My job is to ensure he's taken care of fairly. I'm still hoping we can come to a fair agreement, but some fundamental differences need to be bridged.''
According to the paper, Dubas is seeking a standard three-year, two-way entry level contract while the Kings have offered a one-year contract with Manchester.
I'll have updates from the morning skate about all the day's relevant topics a bit later...

That sucks, he was a late pick and looked like a D prospect that had/ could find a role. I thought Lombardi loved this guy...
I'm guessing the Kings have so many prospects they are up against the contract limit and have to manage their contracts carefully. I don't really blame Campbell for his reaction.
DL loved his heart, love of the game and desire to win. His skill level is not there. Maybe DL was wrong on this one.
Off topic, a friend from Michigan says Quincey is ready to go and likened him to Sean O'Donnell. He is a quote he sent to me.
"I'm sick and tired of waiting," Quincey, 23, said. "When guys get injured, then I get an opportunity. I don't want anyone to get hurt. This way I can hopefully play my way in the lineup and hopefully stick there."
Holy cr*p!! Can't DL do anything right??!! First he trades Nordstrom for noth -- what? Oh, Moller? Then, he lowballs POS and refuses to -- what? Oh, he signed, okay, but then he trades our highly touted #1 pick Tukonen for some lose -- Clune? Oh, he's GOOD?, well, how good is he going to look when Tukonen scores 30 goals this y -- FINLAND? Well, then never mind that, but what the hell do you think Kopitar is going to do when he sees how unwilling DL is to pony up and pay what players des -- HOW many years? Really! Seven years? That does seem like a long time ...
isn't this kid like 97th on our depth chart? Demanding a two way contract when you've accomplished nothing and when a plane crash would have to wipe out the entire defense before you even get considered to play in the NHL is a bit much. Offer him a two way with league minimum in the ahl and $20 billion in the NHL and let him rot on the narchs tim his head pops out of his butt.
Going back to the ohl is just to inflate his stats against 16 year old who can hardly skate.
Good going kid. Show your character now so DL can ship you out early.
hahaha... nice, quisp.
I knew there was more to this than just the single line in the AHL transactions that announced Manchester had released him from his ATO.
That being said, I think it's probably a non-issue from a "news" standpoint, and will be resolved at some point.
Thanks Rich, you're a God... any word on who will be scratched tonight, and if the Kings will go with 7 D or continue to roll four lines that have shown no ability to score?
Nice one Quisp, sums up the entire offseason...
Campbell is a potential diamond-in-the-rough prospect who still needs to prove himself. I didn't see anything at camp that would warrant an entry level contract. If he was as good as he considers himself, he would have been drafted at 18 and not age 20. Oh well, good luck to him...
this guy's a 3rd round pick... and wasn't close to making the team as far as I can remember. what is the big deal? what's his problem?
Great post, Quisp.
I saw we sign this guy for one year and give him the Dan Cloutier Suite at Motel 6.
his agent.
agreed
For an unranked twenty year old, who was picked in a draft for 18 yr. olds, I'm pretty shocked to see this kind of behaviour. Kidd is a better d man than Campbell right now, and he gets it. Unless Campbell plans on continuing his trade in Europe, he better get on board. The Kings own his right for the next two or three years, and he can easily be buried if he doesn't play ball.
nice job, quisp. but i'm sure anthony will still find something wrong... (anthony, that's your cue).
Nordstrom for Modry :), Moeller, and a pick that helped us move up to get Tuebert. We were not going to win the cup with that team, we were building for the future and added 2 good prospects with that trade and a bridge with Modry.
POS contract had to be reasonable, and I think the number that was finally reached was fair. His agent was probably pushing for 1-2 years for 4 mil +. He is not worth that much....yet.
Highly touted.....Tukonen??? Just because he was a first round pick, doesnt mean he is a highly touted pick....the word would be "was" and he never developed. Clune will play more NHL minutes than Tukonen ever will. 30 goals is a stretch buddy.
Good post Quisp, very fun.
Let's all say our former captain's name together (no, not that lying MF Blake)!
N O R S T R O M.
Please note the lack of a D there. Carry on. . .

Did you miss the hyperbole in Quisp's post or are you matching it with sarcasm?
Thanks Rich. What a joke NOT signing Campbell- LA once again becomes the laughing stock of the league- trying to get a third rounder to sign a one year AHL contract. For the rest of you beakers that percieve Campbell to be greedy- name me ONE other third rounder that has settled for anything less than a three year NHL EL contract and I'll show you 50 that have not. He has not demonstrated he is ready to play in the NHL but that has nothing to do with signing an NHL entry level contract. Other clubs would love to get their hands on this kid and would sign him to a 3 year EL contract immediately. Ottawa wanted this kid big time (I think he played for Hartsburg in the Soo) and was not happy that LA traded up to get him. Other clubs must be scratching their heads with this one- brilliant Dean- don't sign him and lose him next summer as a free agent! LA is once again "penny wise and pound foolish".
Quisp,
Brilliant.
Campbell needs to realize that he has a lot to prove and demanding a two-way contract after he just got drafted in the 3rd round as a 20 year old makes him look like a bit of a douchebag.
Re Norstrom/Nordstrom:
And if anyone didn't need an extra D in his name, it was Norstrom! Now, if only we had Blakde back (or Coffedy, or even Vopdat or Zmodlek).
(and to the other anonymous who thought I was serious about Tukonen, etc.... for the record:
Clune = good
Tukonen = bad
Norstrom = good
Norstrom trade = good
Moller = good
Cammy trade = good
Teubert = good
POS = good
POS contract = good
Kopitar contrct = good
DL = good
AEG = bad
Rich = good
(Ducks = bad)
Quisp...I normally think you ready to leap off a bridge, but that post was brilliant. Glad to see you have calmed down...now just talk to Anthony.
thanks for the public service, but even after reading all that Brian Hayward still thinks it's Nordstrom with a D. after all, that's how he's been saying it for the last 10 years. so therefore it must be right.
also that's where he keeps getting all those bills from in the mail, where his wife spends his money. so it's obviously stuck in his brain.

i'm not in the habit of tracking other teams 3rd rounders...mostly because most of them are not difference makers in the NHL. therefor, i cannot do what you are asking.
* note that i said most, not all. so please, don't bombard me with the glut of 3rd round picks on NHL rosters.
shed some light on your harsh criticism of DL on this situation for us 'beakers' because to me, DL has the same leverage with him 3 year contract or not right now.

What are you talking about??? If Ottawa -- or anyone else -- wanted him so badly, then they would have found a way to do it . . . like drafting him in the 2nd round. Think before you post.
Anonymous, re: "Quisp...I normally think you [sic] ready to leap off a bridge..."
I think you must have me confused with somebody else, or else you are reading my quotes of other commenters and thinking it's me.
"name me ONE other third rounder that has settled for anything less than a three year NHL EL contract and I'll show you 50 that have not"- if you really can do this then you have got way too much time on your hands. I wonder what i'd find if i googled "AHL ATO third round"....
Anyways, i knows there no limit on games played for these, but I always thought of ATOs as short term contracts so would not have thought that campbell would be on MAN for the whole year anyway, unless he managed to impress there. The way I see it, he didn't impress enough to earn an ELC out of camp so his best shot would be to, as moller so rightly put it, play his sack off in MAN and earn one there, or at least be signed to an AHL SPC. Going back to his junior team seems a$$ backwards to me. He should be making a statement with his play, not his agent. Of course, since we don't know the terms of his ATO (eg what he's getting paid), he could very well be getting screwed on his ATO, in which case i'd applaud him for standing up and also suggest he get new representation.
"Quisp...I normally think you ready to leap off a bridge, but that post was brilliant. Glad to see you have calmed down...now just talk to Anthony."
This thread is going just fine without bring HIM into it.
FWIW-
I had a little time on my hands. Between this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_NHL_Entry_Draft and this one: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ , only 2 of the 30 2008 3rd rounders have current entry level deals with their teams:
#79 Zack Smith(C) of Ottawa
#90 Tomas Kundratek(D) of the NYRangers
Andrew is lucky to be in the position he's in, especially at his age. If I were in DL's shoes, I'd sign #63 Robert Czarnik (C) and #88 Geordie Wudrick (LW) BEFORE I'd sign Andrew in the middle at #74, simply because of their younger ages and better upside potential. Remember, sometimes when you have a ton of picks, you'll pick a player just to keep him from another team in the hopes he develops well enough to garner some trade value later. It doesn't happen often, but I could see Andrew's pick as falling into this category, seeing how a few teams wanted him and we got our 3rd rounders where we wanted them.
Anyway, if you want to take the time, call up the other 28 without 3 year ELD's and let us know if they wouldn't settle for a pro contract of any kind. Most of us know the answer and it never hurts to ask, but I know I don't have THAT kind of time...
very funny quisp
I guess those who don't read your posts aren't going to get it.
As for the anonymous who's bashing DL for this...you have to be kidding right?
Exactly what do you know about Campbell and how much have you seen him play?
3rd round players have to earn their contracts...apparently, he hasn't earned anything. At least it's good to know the kid and his agent are going to be problem children in the future.
I guess according to anonymous, Ottawa will be calling shortly!
I think I was thinking back to you in the beginning of the summer, where all was doom and gloom...but I could have been thinking of someone else Quisp.
Do you guys bashing Campbell know what awards he has won in the OHL or what coaches like DeBoer and Hartsburg have said about him? I didn't think so- I follow the OHL closely and know several scouts- say what u want but these guys are dumbfounded he has not been offered a standard contract for a third rounder. This isn't rocket science guys but then again when a player doesn't sign I understand how the uninformed assume a player is being greedy. Read some of DL's quotes about Campbell- pretty much all positive but no let's try and pay him like a 6th rounder. What a way to build a franchise!!
"Do you guys bashing Campbell know what awards he has won in the OHL"
awards in the OHL...who cares? this doesn't guarantee any level of success in the NHL.
i'm not bashing Campbell at all either... i'm just saying that DL is in no worse position at this time due to not offering him an ELC.
it's obvious you like Campbell, and that's fine.
but lets not pretend this situation is 'ruining' the franchise though.
there are plenty of other valid things hurting the franchise than this.
ps. i didn't think he looked all that impressive at camp or in pre season... that coming from a novice/fan eye.
I'm well aware of Campbell's accolades and far from bashing him, but OHL success does not spell AHL nor NHL success. Therefore, he needs to prove himself at the next level.
Another player received great CHL accolades, Justin Azevedo. Azevedo signed with the Monarchs, not an entry level deal with the Kings. Sure, there is a two round difference between the two, but similar accolades nonetheless.
There is a reason Campbell was not drafted 'til he was 20...maybe he's a late bloomer, thus, even more reason to need to prove himself.
Quite a quip, Quisp. Is it possible that the Kings have too much defensive depth?

Had to be someone else, although a little "doom and gloom" would probably help my street cred with Cristobal and others. No, I have been optimistic to a fault, I'm afraid.
