About “Rinkside View”

Here are three things I know about the situation…

1) My sphere is influence is rather limited, and last time I checked, it doesn’t include the ability to alter FSN programming. If it does, I’m going to be rather upset that nobody told me earlier.

2) It’s not the Kings’ idea.

3) It’s probably not going away, at least in terms of the previously scheduled broadcast, but if you’re so inclined, I believe tom.feuer@foxsports.com would be the proper outlet for your comments.

Poor Tom, he’s going to hear it from the fans. LOL. Personally, I’m not thrilled with the rink side view but it doesn’t bother me as much as it seems to be bothering other viewers.

  • Marc Nathan

it also wouldn’t hurt to express your views on a national level on Thursday afternoon(s) when Gary Bettman takes calls on XM204/Sirius208 – Home Ice.

  • Samantha

Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is about Rinkside View. I never even knew it had a name, or that it caused so many problems among fans. Maybe people just want something to complain about…
Rinkside View is better than no view.

  • Someone

    Just sent an email.

The rinkside view sucks. But the theme of my email was basically, why does it have to be exclusive and why do this when your only giving us a pitiful amount of HD to begin with.

  • Chris G

I’ve been a Kings fan for over 20 years, and I have to say I LOVE the Rinkside view. Especially the camera angle from behind the goalie… you get to see the plays better and get a better sense of the flow. Lighten up people and enjoy this new way of looking at the game. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s definately a step in the right direction away from the boring old way of looking at games.

  • Will Hutchison

I don’t mind the rinkside view that much anymore. Being completely honest, I can’t believe Fox broadcasts so many of the team’s games considering how unpopular hockey is right now, and how bad the team has been for so long.

Maybe both the teams and its fans are a little tight right now. It might be time to stop complaining and just enjoy our favorite team. How many rinkside games are there anyway? It sure beats listening to the Ducks broadcasters, or Mike Emmerich’s (I hate that guy) play by play. The rinkside view offers some unique angles and my non-hockey friends actually like it better.

I am drinking the Kool-aide, but I aside from the Vancouver game and some sub-par goaltending from JLB, I think that the team has played pretty well, far better than I expected them to.

Inside the Kings is a great site that is far more informative and positive than LetsGoKings.com, the live chat during the games is cool, and in general the posters here are a good bunch of fans. Let’s not geek out too much by complaining about the broadcasting; something this site has no control over.

Samantha, the big deal is that FSW is only telecasting a very few number of KINGS games in HD, I believe about 10. And so far, every one of those have had the ‘rinkside view’. It’s an interesting perspective to use once in awhile, but just ridiculous for the entire game. I would prefer FSW stick to standard-definition if this is what we have to put up with HD. Awful…

  • Starlight

What is this “Rinkside View” anyway? I keep seeing references to it but noone explains what it is or what is so bad about it…

  • KingsFan304

I watched it for the first time last night (I’m usually *at* the home games!). I have to say, I was honestly getting a little nauseous from the widely swinging goal cam, and, as other people have mentioned, had trouble telling at which end of the they were playing, until I saw which goaltender it was. The length-wise shots from about the penalty boxes were quite useless, as you really couldn’t see what what happening at either end.

  • stnlycupla

I personally like it but really it doesn’t matter what us existing fans think as I would strongly suspect this is an initiative to booster ratings by acquiring new fans. I believe existing Kings fans are going to watch their games regardless of the production details. The real question/concern to fox is whether or not the rinkside production will grab attention outside of the usual suspects (hardcore fan base) and allow them to build on their numbers.

  • Gary

With Rinkside view, it’s like sitting on the glass, only better. There are no dead spots along the near boards or in the corners. You can actually see the puck. You can actually see the plays. Sure, you don’t get to see offsides, but come on, the officials may not be close to perfect, but I’ll bet the offsides calls have the highest correct percentage of all the calls they make. If you’ve never sat on the glass before, or only watch tv, then I can understand why you are having trouble. If you’re getting dizzy, then move back from your tv. The producers will eventually fine tune this and will mix in a few more pulled-back shots and, hopefully, more angles on the replays. But for now, it’s the best thing since the glowing puck- which was stupid.

  • mark4kings

I’m exactly with you, KingsFan304; I too am at 95% of the home games so last night was my first and hopefully last experience with the Rinkside crap. When they showed the “log view” it was impossible to see the puck (or just about anything else, for that matter) Overall, it just sucked. I’ll be back in sec. 219 tomorrow and forever if this is the future of Kings’ telecasts

Tom Feuer is a pussycat. He doesn’t even return emails anymore. First he responded directly. Then it was his assistant that gave a standard reply. Now, they don’t even bother replying. FIRE TOM FEUER!

Still liking it, wouldn’t mind them alternating with normal view though too. Perhaps it’s not possible but ideally I’d like a split of both throughout the telecast.

Another post mentioned the difficulty of quickly figuring out which end that we were viewing, maybe slightly offsetting the camera behind the net (off to the left @ one end, off to the right @ the other) would help with this. Just a half-baked idea…;)

  • David

Thanks Rich for this information. I would encourage every Kings fan who is unhappy with Rinkside View to contact Tom Feuer at Fox Sports and complain about it.

FSN is ruining the viewing enjoyment of these games with their terrible camera angles. I couldn’t differentiate which team was on attack last night since the camera angles were identical from behind each net. Not to mention that you can hardly follow the puck!

  • Marc Nathan

P.S. For those of you who have not seen RINKSIDE VIEW, Fox Sports is replaying the game in about a half hour (12 noon here in LA)

Personally, I’d rather listen to the call on radio than watch another Rinkside view game.

    Horrible.

  • wavesinair

Seems lots more of the rinkside fans are coming out now. As I said before, on an HD bigscreen, it is fantastic. I love it. I know you can’t see the plays develop like you can normally, but the raw experience of being that upclose is just wonderful for me. As I said before also, it would be just great to allow the viewer to choose which camera feed he sees. One day it will happen.

  • stepa

Thanks Rich. All game they televiese behind the net . We cant see spead of the game , names and # players on the back . They need watch centrise, nobode telecst like LA . Lader they start show basketbol behind the net . They dont care about hockey .

  • brianguy

    any relation to Niedenfeuer?

bottom line, it seems like Rinkside was a stopgap measure to try to “appease” some fans since FSN doesn’t seem to be willing to step it up and broadcast more than a couple of Kings games in HD. meanwhile the winless Clippers get all their games, if I’m not mistaken.

it just doesn’t work out on a regular TV. sorry – but you have to make these broadcasts appeal to both regular and HD tv watchers. go back to the old cameras and transmit in HD already. the end.

  • stepa

FIRE TOM FEUER! FIRE TOM FEUER! FIRE TOM FEUER!

  • PRMan

I think it’s time for banners to show up behind TM’s head on the bench or some other way that say “Rinkside View Sucks”.

Somebody who sits behind Bob and Jim keep chanting “Rinkside View Sucks” for a whole shift.

Make sure the message gets on FSN loud and clear.

Also, call Nick and Darryl and tell them how much you hate it.

Call Gary Bettman on XM and express your extreme displeasure, how you hate it more than you hate him, so that’s saying something.

“it would be just great to allow the viewer to choose which camera feed he sees. One day it will happen.”

they could easily do this now, there’s already an “ALT” channel on my TV for FSN (the USC-Wash game was on it the other day). put the rinkview over there, so the rest of us don’t have to be subjected to it…

  • THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS

the bad thing about being a king’s fan right now is that we can’t even watch them lose their games because fox sports, not only have to experiment with the camera angles, the camera men don’t know how to follow the puck. sounds like a perfect storm of bad marketing. don’t go to the building, and don’t watch on television.

  • -J

I like the rinkside view for the most part. It still needs some work, but overall i think it provides better perspective of the play, though perhaps it is too quick for most fans (i’ve played hockey for many years so i’m used to watching the game from ice level). In last nights game, for example, there were some great sequences where the kings were cycling down behind the net and you could really get a sense of the stick and footwork that was going on, see body positioning, etc. The far back cameras never catch any thing like that. It would certainly be better in 16:9 format than 4:3 as the panning can be an issue at times. They’ve improved it quite a bit IMO with each broadcast and I, for the most part, don’t even notice it as being different anymore. I hope they continue working on it and improving it since i think in catches the intensity and speed of the game better.

    Uh…what??

  • Anonymous

100% Rinkside is horrible!!!! How did you like missing multiple plays from the blueline cam when the puck is down low?

Nice breakaway Frolov “I think it was a breakaway” nobody watching the telecast saw that until the replay.

If used at all, the ratio should be 80% standard angle 20% rinkside.

  • What’s the frequency, Kenneth?

In due time, we’ll have the _option_ of rinkside view or the classic format, and/or we’ll be able to see them on split-screen. Digital TV will afford us the bandwidth for this possibility.

  • cristobal

If used at all, the ratio should be 80% standard angle 20% rinkside.

I second this statement. The rinkside view has it’s merits, but the camera work is horrible and there’s no reason to have the rinkside view the entire game. Sometimes gimmicks need to be abandoned before they alienate the audience. Once some viewers leave, they’ll never come back.

  • Hat Trick

“Stink Side” vue is a conspiracy to get fans to go to the game. If this was offered on Center Ice, they would pay YOU to watch it. What’s next………………Helmet Cam???????

  • Brian

Thank you Rich for posting that email! You made my day! Now I have to create 50 email accounts so it looks like there are more people complaining… ;o)

  • Adam

I’m from Detroit but caught the Kings game on Center Ice and I was about ready to throw up after the 2nd period. Stupid view made me nauseous, not to mention extremely hard to follow the puck. Get rid of it ASAP.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the contact info. Rinkside view is HORRIBLE. It makes it incredibly hard to see anything that is going on away from the puck, except in rare cases. And Im pretty sure that’s a HUGE part of hockey.

  • Anonymous

The rinkside view made me want to vomit.

I completely disagree with the poster who said you can see the plays develop better with rinkside view. I couldn’t see anything because of the camera jump when the players started moving the puck outside of the zone. You just can’t see the players moving at the blue line as they break out the puck.

Rinkside view is obviously better when you’re at the rink because you can see the WHOLE rink and not get lost during those weird cuts.

Frankly, I’ll listen to the radio broadcast until it’s gone.

  • -J

“I completely disagree with the poster who said you can see the plays develop better with rinkside view”

Like i said, my comprehension of the game is probably different from yours and most fans because, unlike most, I’ve played quite a bit of hockey. How do you think the game looks from the bench or when you’re parked up on the blue line playing D? You know for one thing, i wouldn’t mind them getting rid of it just so the copious, irksome, vexing, pointless whining about how bad it is can cease about how bad it is. It always seems that more people post when there’s something marginal to complain about than to talk about hockey.

  • photomike

I’ve created a monster here Tom, all you had to do was respond to my email. I hope you’re happy. People who have supported the Kings for years and supported your sponsors, the sponsors that pay your salary are speaking loudly. WE HATE RINKSIDE!

Your response to my original email before all this started, you stated that you are going to use it for all HD telecast and the decision has been made. You have the power to make the simple change. The standard cameras are there and too limited in use, only on slowmo replays. The ratio should be flip-flopped and we’ll be there.

Tom Feuer’s email to me he stated:
“While the L.A. hockey fans are hardcore, at present there are not enough of them.”

But Clippers fans are everywhere? Your argument as to why Kings only get 10 games in HD has no grounds…..

Long live “Hockey Night in Canada” and their camera men that know how to follow the puck……. PHOTOMIKE p.s. iheart IANMONSTA…..

  • Alpha Baker

I like the rinkside view. Makes me feel closer to the game. Personally, I get nauseous pretty easily, but not with this camera view. At the very least, I’d like to see it stick around as another angle during “normal” broadcasts.

  • Kevin

I suggest a very brilliant idea of…Putting a helmet cam on every player on the ice and having mister video operator toggle back and forth between different players every 30 seconds.

This will give the viewer the REAAAAL experience of not only being at the game, but being on the ICE!

Can you just imagine seeing through the eyes of Kopitar! Doughty! Frolov!

This would be the most amazing feature ever.

Then, in the future, there will be the option of being able to choose who you want to be in the game! For instance, tomorrow I might want to see through Kopitar’s eyes, but next week I want to see through Sully’s.

    The possibilities are truely endless!

Next, we can eliminate all face off circles, red and blue lines, and just have a ten round shoot out to determine who has the slickest moves and call it a game!!

Or, better yet. Get rid of Bettman and put hockey back on the map in a respectable way without making a damn circus out of it.

I apologize for believing hockey to be a real mans sport and wanting it to stay that way unlike basketball where gigantic men cry about getting a slap on the wrist.

  • stepa

    Thank you photomike !!!

    WE HATE RINKSIDE!

  • -J

“I apologize for believing hockey to be a real mans sport and wanting it to stay that way unlike basketball where gigantic men cry about getting a slap on the wrist.”
And just how exactly does a video broadcast change that? At one point, the NHL was not televised- good thing most of the powers that be don’t share your logic or we wouldn’t be watching any games on TV today (if you don’t believe me, ask Blackhawks fans about how many home games they’ve seen in recent years).

Or what about the helmet rule, cus you know at one point that wasn’t a requirement. I bet you’re against making checking to the head a penalty as well. It is so much more manly to risk career ending head injuries of course. Shame on the NHL and the NHLPA for trying to protect their players and improve their business.

  • Dan H.

Message sent. Be polite people but let him know how you feel.

I’ve been watching hockey a long time, I coached, I still play. I don’t like Rinkside either. And don’t even get me started on the over the net view.

  • photomike

Polite or not, Tom is flat out being an ass over this. He told me that he made the decision and he’s going to stick with it. Just like I made the decision to hound him to the end and bring as many of you with me. Hey, what’s right is right. The fan’s in the vast majority don’t like it, fans of other teams hate it and people have emailed and called into NHL Live and complained. Fans of other teams are paranoid that they’ll get Rinkside angles pushed onto their broadcasts too.

Simple way to insure they get the message is to simply put a short message in the topic section of your email. Whoever is looking at his emails at a minimum see the topic before they erase.

Hey, if Obama can be President, then we can get this our way too…… CBGB is my Yoda….
