R.I.P. Rinkside?
Our sharp media columnist, Tom Hoffarth, will be writing an update on the ``Rinkside View'' situation, including probable ``tweaks'' that are coming to those broadcasts. Maybe Tom Feuer does want you to watch, after all...
One idea I heard, that makes sense, would be to film the game with those cameras but offer it up as an edited package, either between periods or after a game, the way NFL Films does with their highlight packages. It might look really sharp that way. It just doesn't work as a live broadcast.

J.P. Hoornstra writes about NHL and IHL hockey for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. He welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.

Jill Painter joined the Daily News in 2000 and during the last eight years she's covered the Dodgers, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Kings, golf and everything in between. Even though she's from Colorado, she still freezes in the Staples Center press box but always manages to thaw her fingers in time to make deadline. E-mail Jill at

A well edited blend of both/all views would be ideal IMO..
Awesome. Good to hear there is some changes coming.
For those of us that don't care about the NFL, can someone explain what exactly they are doing with these edited version? Is it just a bunch of replays?
I'm all for using the RSV for replay situations. I think it can really add to the experience here. It just sucks as a live (and exclusive) view.
yes... don't make us sit through a full broadcast of this, unbearable
at most, this should be used for maybe 1/2 a dozen cuts during a game. we're talking one or two per PERIOD. anything more is nauseating and reduces our ability to follow the action.
RICH I also liked the story in Daily News on the "Misfit Line". you should definitely link it here for everyone's attention
Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead. hehe
If all of the dislike to rinkside viewing is ignored by fox and Tom Feuer then we have to go to the sponsors and tell them he (Tom F.) says it is his way or the highway. Meaning he doesn't care if the fans see who the sponsors are. Maybe that will get someones attention.
Oh Please let it be the end of this awful rinkside view. people only watch because you want to watch the game if it is also on NHLNET in regular non rinkside view I'm sure everyone would flip over there, sorry Bob & Jim.
Congrats fellow Kings fans..we won! (hopefully)
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tom Feuer is still a dick.
ok highlights are an EXCELLENT idea
rinkside would be perfect fit for that
great way to make lemonade outta lemons
too claustrophobic for live
Now I lay me down to sleep.....Please God, make them get rid of Rinkside View! Thank you.
Rich,
Will Tom's update be on this blog or somewhere else?
I'm sure once that email to Mr. Feuer was posted we did our civic duty and hammered that guy's inbox. Hopefully he read about two or three just to see how pissed we are.
I'll definitely post or link anything relevant as it comes along...
The NFL Films model would be great. 10% of the rsv angle is good coverage. Perfect fit for a few minutes of footage between periods and post game.
I doubt this was feuer's doing. We hammered David Hill and 2 other exec's as well. If they dont eliminate rinkside view as the primary live broadcast angle than i think its safe to say they are in for round 2.
THANK YOU Rich,problem # 1 in my life .
Sweeeeeeeeeet!!!
I do think that after the next HD game, depending on how good or bad it is, we should collectively email Mr. Feuer again and THANK HIM for listening to the people. It would be a great way to keep him on our semi-good side, so the next time we have a complaint or suggestion, he actually listens. I know that I, for one, will send him a thank you if the next HD broadcast is any good.
AAAHHHH
That's the sound of Tom Feuer EATING his words..
"Don't like it don't watch" my a$$!
dick
Now that the people have spoken, how about we try to work on getting rid of Television time-outs during the game? There are plenty of other ways to advertise and make money for the broadcaster without stopping the game and destroying the natural flow and momentum. They don't interrupt the game for advertising during the playoffs.
Am I the only one who hates commercial timeouts?
Well, when he responded "don't watch", I sent a second emailm this time copying the Kings (feedback@lakings.com or something like that they had on their website). I got a pretty quick response from an aegworldwide.com address saying "thanks for the input, your opinion will be seriously considered in our future contacts with FSW" (paraphrased).
I have to think his asinine comment probably made it difficult to not take fan protests from there on out seriously. I mean, its much easier to get away with just ignoring fans that it is to ignore fans and tell them to go to hell to boot.
I have to say that I hate that rinkside view they do. It is horrible and you miss so much of the action. They better change it back to the way it used to be. When they first did it, I thought they would show the viewing for a couple minutes but then they never switched it back and it has to be the worst way to watch the NHL on tv.
I think the general consensus amongst most fans have been that it is not an absolute abomination because we do see the game at angles that you miss during normal live play, it is just a terrible way to watch the game completely through. I think the package idea sounds great and if they could pull it off they could redeem themselves and we can all forget this mess...
As long as no more than 30% of the game is in Rinkside view, I'm fine.
Like I said before, I JUST GOT my new HDTV for the SPECIFIC PURPOSE of watching Kings games. This rinkside view crap was killing me.
I'm glad to hear that reasonable minds are prevailing.
Everything in moderation...please.
Maybe miracles can happen!
BTW for those of you want to email the top dogs still (get the names from the last thread) They won't give out email addy's but I tried all the names like this: firstname.lastname@foxsports.com and none of them bounced - so fire away!
