Who's in goal?

| | Comments (32) |

Today's game could be an opportunity for Terry Murray to give Jason LaBarbera a start, otherwise, Erik Ersberg would be playing on back-to-back days. Murray hasn't tagged Ersberg with the title of No. 1 goalie, though he started the last six games in which the Kings are 4-1-1. The 3-1 loss to Nashville certainly wouldn't be blamed on Ersberg (and one of those goals was an empty-netter). The Kings netted 34 shots, but only scored once, which was the major problem Saturday. Who would you like to see in goal today?

Of Course,
Forget about fairness.
Lets not give Ersberg the same 10 games Barbs had.
Difference is, Ersberg played 100 times better.
I bet TM couldn't wait for a reason to start Jason again. And now he has one.
Huh.

Once more, I felt last night was EEs best game yet. Stick with him if he can physically go.

Ersberg!!!

And I wouldn't be surprised if TM goes that route. He already started Labs in both games of a back-to-back this season, and since Ersberg couldn't be blamed for last night's loss, I don't see why he wouldn't put him right back in there. I think the team plays with more confidence with Ersberg back there, too.

Despite last night's loss, I don't think there's too much "broken" with this Kings team, especially as far as defense and goaltending are concerned. Why fix it???

GO KINGS!!!

Ersberg. What else do you need to see from this guy to make him #1? He's much more refined than Labs. The telling tale is that the team plays more confidently with him in net.

It's a back-to-back game and an early one at that, so it would be hard to fault Terry Murray for giving Jason the nod tonight.

Then again, the Kings don't play again until Thursday so maybe they will throw Ersberg back out there tonight.

I'd always prefer to see Ersberg, but only TM and co. will know if he is fresh enough to go again tonight.

Labs. Not a fan but lets see if sitting has put a fire under his shrinking rear end.

I'd love to see Ersberg in goal again. I want to see how he rebounds from a loss, especially in back to back situations. I think Murray will probably give Labs the start just to rest ersberg. He may also be really sore from that post to post last night. Either way, kings win 4-2.

Labs deserves the shot......

I would like to see Ersberg. LaBarbara had a chance at a back to back and I would like to see the grit of the kid to see how he handles it. We will need his calmness in net tonight.

Mark said:

Oh, Ersberg, no question. I mean, if he needs a rest, thats fine, oh well. But he shutout the Ducks last time... and I'd like him to get a second chance, maybe the Kings will score for him this time.

Ersberg, unless he is a little hurt. I still can't believe we lost that game. We were simply dominating in the first period. Ellis was standing on his head. There was a tem minute period in the first where it looked like we were on a very long power play. How we did not put three pucks in the net I will never figure out.

exacty Brian....who ever is in charge of offense needs to re-think some things. Like why we cannot score with a 2 min 5 on 3? That's a crime.

I would like to see Labs in net tonight, just for the fact that it's back-to-back games. I don't think there's a question about who should start games, at this point. Ersberg have earned his spot as the go-to goalie and his style (not giving up rebounds) fits the defensive play the Kings have in place. He sees most of the shots and he absorbs them, Labs sees the shots but he give up the rebounds. Our D is concentrating on clearing our net of players and when the rebound comes, they have no clue where the puck is. Taking the man is the right play, but you need to have a goalie that will not allow a rebound on every shot and that's what Ersberg is so good at.
Anyway, I degress...Labs tonight, let Ersberg rest.

Tonight I would go with Labarbara. Iceberg has been great but this game has an early start, and there is no need to wear the kid out so early (He also took a bump or two last night). Great game by the Kings last night, just could not pot the puck. Is it just me or do the Kings just don't pass on a two on one? It seems like the shot is the only option.

The Man from UNCLE said:

The Iceberg if he's up for it. I wouldn't start Barbs unless the coach has no other choice.

Moondoggie said:

We need to see how "The Iceberg" stands up in back to back situations. Lababs usually plays well after a layoff, he's rested and would probably be the better choice in a back to back situation. I'm not an advocate of bringing a goalie in on a back to back game situation but in this case and with the way he's been playing, I've got to give it to Ersberg. Lets see what the kid has, my guess, he'll do just fine.

Ersberg in goal gives the Kings the best opportunity to win. If he did injure himself last night on that sprawling save against Erat, then LaBarbera should get the start. Go Kings!

Ersberg if hes up for it, he may need a day off from that game last night, but if Babs plays this game, the Swedish meatball should play next game for sure.

Ersberg for sure, I think he gives the KINGS the best chance to win games.

LaBarbera, that's one of the advantages of a back-up goalie, for back to back games. You don't want to exhaust your #1 and take the chance of him getting hurt.

Mark said:

I'd say give Ersberg a break and start JLabs in the net against the struggling Quacks. that way, we can see if JLabs is ready to resume the #1 spot (God forbid). if not, Ers should be the official #1 goalie.

besides, Ers got banged up pretty good last night vs. the Preds.

Ersberg.

Ersberg without a doubt. He's earned it.
I'm just afraid once Murray puts Labs back in, that love for him will start again.

Paul from Oxnard said:

The Kings have a chance to pull within 2 points of Anaheim and within 1 point of a playoff spot if they can win. They have a few days off after tonight. Back to back or not, it would be a huge mistake to start LaBarbara, not to mention the wrong message to send to your team. Pick the right #1 and stick with him. And it should be obvious to everyone that Ersberg is the right #1.

To guys like mason and Fuzzerson I'd just say that Labs has had his shot already. He's had multiple shots over the last few years. He's never proven he's a capable NHL goalie, starter or backup. Enough of Labs already. Give me the goalie who can win games. That's Ersberg.

mac said:

I agree with most of the previous posters. Ersberg is probably the best goalie for the Kings during the past couple of years (as in playing a solid, calm game). But in this situation I could understand the decision to go with Labs aswell.

Anonymous said:

I's say give Pillows the second game of the back to backs and leave Ersberg in the rest of the time...

JonG Author Profile Page said:

Labs, just because tonight's game is the third in four nights. Ersberg should be our #1 goalie, but there is nothing wrong with putting in the #2 guy once in a while.

who cares who's in net? Lets juggle the lines. I don't think there's any defensive regression if the lines look like this:

Moller - Kopitar - Brown
Frolov - O'Sullivan - Clune
Handzus - Stoll - Boyle
Calder - Armstrong/Richardson - Simmonds

Insert Ivanans when and where he's needed.

Move Harrold back to defense and cut back on the other D's minutes, except Doughty.

Cynic said:

Ersberg.

I don't mind those lines, except you do not break up Simmonds and Zeus. Sims looked possessed last night and I think Zeus is helping him. Odie with Doughty, Zeus with Sims. This might be better:

Sully - Kopi - Brown (Familiar Chemistry)
Fro - Stoll - Mo (Cycle line)
Army - Zeus - Simmonds (Stopper)
Calder - Boyle - Harrold (Grinders w/extra D)

I'll tell you one thing, I know which D-man gets tossed when JMFJ comes back. His initials are D.G. Too many mistakes for a veteran.

If LaBarbera starts tonight, it's only to solidify his new role as the Kings backup netminder.
