Spotlight back home

Terry Murray was asked after today’s morning’s skate if he discussed the games against Canadian teams in which the games are broadcast back in Canada. Perhaps, players put a little too much pressure on themselves?
“I should’ve done that up in Calgary, actually,” Murray said referring to the Kings’ 6-2 loss. “I don’t normally bring that up as part of the pre-game meeting. Players are aware there will be a lot of attention brought to the game and the Canadian broadcasting crew is following all those Canadian teams so closely, and they highlight the Canadian kids. They tend to have a little extra pressure put on them just knowing that’s there. Good point. Maybe I should talk about it more often. Going into Calgary last week. I can remember past teams I’ve coached some players tried to do way too much.”

We hardly have any Canadians on this team. Of our top players, only Stoll and Doughty come to mind.

  • charlesinReno

so if nashville loses and the kings win, we’ll be in eighth place in western conf

I think that’s just Murray mis-speaking…it’s one of the rare times all year that any of the players will get any extra attention, including Americans and Europeans. I don’t think it had anything to do with the loss to Calgary though. It didn’t look like they were trying to do too much, it looked like they were completely flat and not trying to do anything at all.

Hey Jill. Any chance you and or Rich could do a “whatever happened to Tomas Sandstrom”?

NHL network had the 1993 Kings/Toronto game 7 on and I miss having a true power forward and I can’t really think of one since we had him.

    Thanks!

    sully too….

Anonymous; Sully isn’t Canadian, he played for Team USA with Dustin Brown this past year at the World Championships.

  • EAT THE RICH

    What are the lineups tonight?
Same as last game with Calder up top?

  • Josh

  • Paul from Oxnard

And Toronto is in a storm of attention right now thanks to Burkey. One of the on Hockey This Morning guys on XM radio this morning said “no way the Kings win tonight! Not a chance!”. I hope they prove him wrong.

There is a ton more attention on the games up here in Canada. It’s the only thing on the radio and there are hours of pregame and highlight shows dedicated to it.

Most hockey players know that Canada is the mecca of hockey and have played there in one form or another. When you get to the NHL it’s truly big time. They don’t have to be from Canada to know that.

  • THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS

Post2post – Glad to hear we have some fans up north. I had forgotten that O’Donnell was Canadian and didn’t really know about Simmonds or Quincey til I checked.

I did say “top” players, though, so I wasn’t including:
    Armstrong
    Richardson
    Calder
    Labarbera.

these guys aren’t cemented in the lineup, exactly.
Thanks for the info, though. I appreciate it.

Lucas – good point about all players understanding of the fans knowledge – something we forget about being in LA. All you need to do is read comments by mrbrett and wavesinair to see that many LA fans don’t know what they’re talking about or watching.

I know it is off topic but I got to say it….
Rich lets start a thread about how/why hockey players are not stupid, dumb, getto, morons, like there are in most other major sports.
There is no lack of dumb ass people in the NFL, think about what happens every year in the NFL some rich guy that came from the getto now has more money then he knows what to do with and screws up. This year so far it is just Plaxico Burress so far. This jack ass has been in trouble by his team so far, then he shoots himself while at a club. With the millions of dollars they pay this dumb ass they should hire a baby sitter oh wait Jerry Jones did that for Pac-Man Jones in Dallas and he beat up the babysitter. Proof that you can take the man out the getto but you cant take the getto out the man. Think about all the guys you hear about in Baseball,Basketball, ect. But you dont hear about dumb ass hockey players to much wait ok S. Avery
but he is just into girls fashion how gangster can he be? Danny Heatley was drunk and wrecked his ride I think right? I dont know I just think the getto need to get out of pro sports becase kids look up to these dip sticks……

  • HCKYJOC

    Chris Bond-

Just a few examples of NHL players who have run a foul of the law.

    Theo Fleury
    Rick Tochett
    Mike Danton

Frankly, Dany Heatley should’ve at least gone through a Vehicular Manslaughter trial.

  • charlesinReno

I believe the Kings are 7 and 1 in their last eight against toronto, and toronto is playing in one of their worst seasons. + LA is at home.
As a handicapper I say no way Toronto wins this game.

    SURFERS

There are a few of us up here in Canada. The last few years have been tough being a fan, with all the laughing when I wear my jerseys. But it’s slowly starting to change with the way the Kings have played the first 22 games.

  • small man, big mouth

ChrisBond – I agree its sad the disgraceful behaviour of some athletes. It can be frustrating as a normal working guy to read about others who have seemingly got it made engaging in such irresponsible behavior, but it’s not just NFLers and people from the “ghetto” that are doing it. There are plenty of spoiled suburban citizens who, as a whole, generate a lot more inhuman behavior.
On the lighter side, what can we expect to happen when these guys work-out 24/7 like they’re in prison, and play only 16 games a year? An idle mind is the devil’s playground. Come to think of it, even if an NFL guy played in all 16 games, there’s a huge possibility that the majority of those games included about 3 minutes of activity. That sounds like training for prison if you ask me.
