Lacking discipline

| | Comments (20) |

Terry Murray was disappointed with the two early penalties in the third period, especially with Dustin Brown's while the Kings already were trying to kill a 5-on-4 penalty. Sean O'Donnell was penalized for hooking at 12 seconds in the third, then Dustin Brown was penalized at 1:59.
``We make a mistake handling the puck and we're shorthanded and now we're killing a penalty and we take a run at a guy and now we're down two men. It's the discipline that it's a penalty kill situation first. You can't look to hunt people down in a penalty kill situation. You've got to make sure you do your job and get back to 5-on-5.''

None too happy with his captain. Any quotes from Brown?

anthony said:

Maybe Brownie is just frustrated playing with Calder.
I mean think about it.
Kopi & Brown just don't look very happy out there. Like an anchor is holding them back.

But I agree with TM. No matter how you feel, you have to control your emotions and play a disciplined game. If you don't play disciplined, things like this happen.
But lets not forget that Brown was on the PK because of O'Donnell's stupid penalty.

It was a painful loss against a weak team. I was anticipating a blow out win. Hopefully they'll do that tonight.

Is Murray REALLY disappointed in our captain, or is he just answering questions? Stuff like that is going to happen when we're playing this style, right? We'll win some we shouldn't and lose some we shouldn't.

Man i was dissapointed last night.
I do not like what i have been seeing from Anze Choke-itar. Don't get me wrong i think he is a great player and i love to have him playing for LA. They sure are paying him alot to play here. I think he needs to pick it up a little. That pass from brown last night right to him should have been in the net. He does not seem as quick as he was. I do have faith in him though.
Hopefully he can pick it up soon

TM is absolutely right....do your job when your down one man and don't take another penalty....

Hey it was still a great game...and I like the fact that Murray is CALM....and does not react like MC

I am so glad O'Donnell plays for Kings, not for the Ducks. Anaheim also need to find a way to ship Todd Marchant and Rob Niedermayer to the Kings.

Good game until the start of the 3rd. JLB was left to out to dry on the goal that made it 2-1, it was a 50/50 play but, he is to dang slow to make that post to post move. Oh, well hopefully we beat up on Phoenix with Easy E in net. Also I agree with Anthony, Calder has got to be moved off that top line he doesn't add anything to it put Frolov or Sully, heck even Moller would be better than Calder he just doesn't have the hands or skill level to be on any of the top 6 lines. On a different note I like the speed that Richardson brings it adds a different element to the team and you can tell when he was playing with Sully and Moller that it was a pretty good line out there. I think the lines should be something like this, I'm not the coach but I can dream can't I?

Frolov-Kopitar-Brown
Sully-Stoll-Moller
Richardson-Handzus-Simmonds
Calder-Armstrong-Ivanans

EAT THE RICH Author Profile Page said:

Jesus - I like your lines kindof, but that 4th is too shaky and the 2nd line, again, is 3 centers on the same line. Your 3rd also has 2 centers on 1 line.

There was a 1/2 shift when Frolov and O'Sullivan were on together and there seemed to be instant chemistry. Maybe that one should be explored with Boyle or Stoll as the center.

What do you think?

I still think Calder - Stoll - Simmonds would be a great "grind" line and start chipping in a goal every other game, or so.

Hockey Jesus said:

I think a line with Calder-Stoll-Simmonds would work out fine. I just thinks that he shouldn't play on any of the top two. Kopistar and Brown need a sniper on that other wing that can play with them and the only one that comes to mind is Sully. You can tell that when they are out there together on the PP that it just adds a different dynamic to that line. I don't know why Murray keeps moving Sully around but, then again I don't know what goes on in the locker room so....

Don't look now but our Penalty-Kill is getting worse as we continue to struggle on the PP.

We're 14th in the league overall behind the likes of Tampa, the Isles, St. Louis, and Ottawa.

Murray is incompotent when it comes to offence, its as simple as that.He is turning Kopitar into a choke-itar.

ian said:

"Marty/Anthony", what is that Murray is/isn't doing that's leading to Kopitar not scoring? Would you care to perhaps give some basis for your whacko opinion(s)? And not having O'Sullivan holding his hand on the first line is invalid, it's the NHL for gods sake, they made it this far without each other!

I think Kopitar perhaps just hasn't found his best form yet combined with more emphasis from this coach on defensive responsibilities, not necessarily a bad thing overall, part of a younger players development into someone who can actually lead a team towards the Cup.

EAT THE RICH Author Profile Page said:

Would it be a crime to ask Murray to evaluate himself? He seems to throw around criticism of his players quite easily, but how does he feel he's doing? Where does he think he needs to improve?
Considering he didn't even know who Patrick O'Sullivan was before game 1 '08, how can we know he understands the modern game?
Despite the positives on the defensive end, we're still only 3 points better than the woeful Stars and just slightly better than the Isles in the standings/points.
LA has incredible young talent in Kopi, Brown, Fro, Doughty, and O'Sullivan. When do we get to expect more than .500 hockey?

Marty...Oh Marty,

Incompotent is a tough critique of a man who took a team that was the league's worst defence to a team that currently has the 4th best defense. Offense may be fun, and it certainly is important. But its defense that wins games and more notably championships. Its defense that allows the offense to PLAY THEIR GAME and not press too hard. So BEFORE you can build on the offensive game, you must without a shadow of a doubt shore up your own end. Give the team time to find thier way. Its a process. So many close missed opportunities, the puck will start finding the net. Its just a matter of patience and learning. But overall, TM has been a perfect fit so far.

THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS Author Profile Page said:

TBone - Marty DID say incompetent on OFFENCE. I don't think he's wrong. He's setting Kopitar and Brown up to take all the blame because there's no consistent scoring from the other 3 lines. Murray seems naive when it comes to finding good line combinations to maximize our offensive talent. One breakaway goal in this game isn't good enough. The PP struggles are proof.
Now, we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, Murray's got them competitive in every game, but if he can criticize the players for their mental errors he's got to face the heat when his tactics aren't working offensively.
We simply cannot score when we need to, or punish the opposition when they take penalties.
But you're correct that defense wins championships and that if Murray can figure out the offense, we're going to be a VERY dangerous team.

fansinceday1 said:

Wow, the patience level of some of our fans, who is to say that the offense isnt already there? There were 5 wide open nets our players missed or the puck bounced over their sticks. We had our chances and we didn't bury them. Is that TM's fault? Don't think so. I think Tm is doing an outstanding job and is preaching what you have to preach....DEFENSE! We haven't had such a defensive minded team in I dont know how long. I like the way they are playing or the "system" they are buying into. The goals will come, but as long as they keep up the way they are improving I'm ok with it. 4th in the league on defense, god, what an improvement. And this team doesn't tank when they give up a bad goal. Another big difference from teams in the past. I say TM......Keep it up!

TBone said:

Ok...not to get into too much of a sparring match, but I clearly understand Marty's comments on the offense being the area he is incompotent with. But how can you argue that TM isn't doing his part when the Kings have so many clear cut chances game in and game out. The players aren't finishing and the power play isn't consistent (Mark Hardy's dept.). And sorry to burst any bubbles out there, but at the NHL level when a player misses a breakaway, or a one timer with a gaping net...THE ONUS IS ON THE PLAYER. Ask Kopitar how he feels about missing so many chances. I guarantee he will look within. Not at his coach, the system, or the line pairings. TM is not to blame. Done.

Brown lost the game for us on that play. The kings had the leafs pp totally disorganized and were in control until Brown went for an unnecessary hit. You don't need to make that play when your killing a penalty, especially when there's 15 seconds left. It changed the whole game around.

They're young, and learning. It seemed only seconds before that Bob and Jim were agreeing that the Kings had really tightened up their game from last year and they weren't giving up goals in bunches as they had. At least this time it was the confluence of two bad penalties instead of just a plain old meltdown. Both penalties looked like brain farts to me--putting the stick where it doesn't belong and not getting away with it for a fraction of a second.

In past years, I don't think the development was right or fast enough. This year, I don't think we have a lot, as fans, to complain about. The ship can't turn around on a dime, and it IS turning around.
