Lombardi quotes on Quick
The Kings chose to recall Jonathan Quick, instead of Jonathan Bernier, to come up from the AHL after Erik Ersberg's groin injury. Both goalies have a 6-5-2 record in Manchester. Quick has a 2.68 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage, while Bernier has a 2.89 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. Here's what Dean Lombardi said this morning about the choice of Quick...
LOMBARDI: ``We had a lot of conversation. Both of them have played well, and so it basically came down to a matter of seniority. Both of them have played well, and they continue to be on the right path. We were hoping we wouldn't have to do this this early. Jonathan (Quick) is a little older and he has paid more dues in the minors. It's certainly not an indictment of Jon (Bernier). He's been pretty good down there too. But there is a concept of seniority. Kids that come out of college these days, for instance, they don't seem to understand that.
``At least (Quick) knows what it's like. He's seen NHL shooters, and that can help him. But so did Jon (Bernier). They have similar experience at the NHL level. It certainly helps though. When you go to the next level, at least it gives him a little leg up. He's a better goalie than he was before. His athleticism is really top notch, but he just has to learn to calm down. With Jon (Bernier), he makes a lot of difficult saves look easy because he's in good position and he's technically sound. Jon (Quick) has been so good athletically that he didn't always have to be technically sound. He just went on reflexes and instinct, but you can't do that up here (in the NHL). You use that athleticism when you have to. He's improved on it, and made a conscious effort to improve.''

My respect for Lombardi always jumps tenfold whenever I read quotes like these.
Unless you're a superstar, seniority rules. Old school. Respect baby.
Well, I read the words Matt, but DL seemed to contradict himself at every turn.
Paraphrasing, DL said, "At least Quick knows what it's like to play in the NHL." Then he says, "But so does Bernier." DL goes on to say they have similar NHL experience. So then why does Quick have a "leg up?" And how do they have similar experience when Quick had/has seniority?
It just seems disingenuous to me and that it's not all about seniority and paying dues. It seems like DL's speaking directly to Bernier to sooth his ego, which is a bad sign.
What did he just say?
Not that hard Waves...I think your reading way too much into this.
Quick has been in the system "longer", period. He has earned the right to get the call over Bernier, and the only way Bernier would have got the call would be if he was playing better. He isn't.
End of story. This isn't about who was the higher draft pick, or who is the bigger prospect, it's who has earned the call.
Based solely on numbers (I have not seen either play this year), Quick gets the call, and I have no problem with that whatsoever.
So long as there are no shootouts or breakaways, LaBarbara will give up his 2-3 goals/game, and the Kings will probably break even in the games he plays.
"Based solely on numbers, Quick gets the call, and I have no problem with that whatsoever."
I totally agree. You and me are on the same page. Quick's playing better and he should get the call. Right? right. But DL didn't say that...
DL: "Both of them have played well, and so it basically came down to a matter of seniority."
This Ersberg injury could be detrimental.
Barbi is a hopeless case. And If neither Quick nor Bernier are up to the challenge, we're dead.
The team could easily begin a losing streak and the season may be over by mid January.
I pray that Quick holds the fort until Ersberg returns because Barbi can't.
Ersberg was our only chance to make the playoffs. If Quick isn't up to the task, the season will tank real fast.
I hope the injury isn't serious. I can't go through what the team went through the last two seasons.
Kids that come out of college these days, for instance, they don't seem to understand that.
What does this mean? Did he have to insult someone in the org. because he's calling up a goaltender? I don't understand.
Translation: Neither guy has set the world on fire, so I based my decision on perserverance rather than performance.
I'm OK with that.
Bring up Quick to rotate and see what happens, Bernier should carry the load down there. If Quick does well, doesn't that open up more opportunity in the trade market when Ersberg can return. I think Bernier will develope better with a full load in Manchester. Let's face it, some of the youth will be traded as time goes on reguardless if they suit up for the Kings.
They chose Quick, the reasons mean nothing to either player because they recognize the situation...the real situation...Lababs is playing out the season for a job somewhere next year. The spot will be open and maybe EE's will be too. he has not really carried the load a grade " A " goaltender does, at least not yet and these groin pulls can linger. So as far as the recall goes, back off the drama and be happy we may see the keeper of our future or maybe not. If you had ever been in that spot in your life you would know there is no great master plan...need a guy and this is the one we are picking....Lets see if we are as deep as we think we are in goal for the future. Oh and forget Vokun...he is done...
Quick's numbers are better than Bernier but they have the same record of wins/losses. Makes sense enough for Lombardi to say they've both played well. Quick was the starter for Reading last year, then played about 20 games for Manchester. Bernier was in Juniors (maybe would have been elsewhere if not for his age, but still). So Quick has seniority. Quotes make sense enough for a situation where there is no head-and-shoulders favorite. Besides, this will be good for Bernier to be sole number 1 in Manch for however long this stretch takes. Good pressure for him to prove himself.
I find it interesting that many of you seem to think that Quick will get the starts that would have gone to Ersberg. Unfortunately, Labs is now TM's clear #1; Quick will be lucky to get a start in a back-to-back. Oh, the humanity . . . .
I'd slap Quick's a$$ between the pipes so fast it'd make his head spin and then I would tell the guy that looked like a deer locked in the headlights last night to go stand in the corner and start figuring out what he's going to do with the reat of his life. JASON........ YOU ARE NOT AN NHL GOALTENDER.... PERIOD, I don't care what you did in the AHL, you were pitiful in the shootout, you had no clue. Did you room with Beachball???
I was 5o feet away from Labs on the shootout last night and to see him get beat the same way twice was very disappointing. This might hurt team morale and if i was Dean or Terry it would be back to the AHL for him.......the only place he had success thus far. Send him back and bring up both kids!
So many posts that are often a paragraph or longer that many times spin cirles and don't really say much..
Read JonG's post. Pretty much says it all.
A lot depends on whether DL/TM intend to play Quick or have him sit on the bench. I think the first conversation DL and TM had was not which goalie are we calling up but what are we going to do about LaBarbera? Once they answered that question, it informed the decision of who gets called up from Manchester.
For all we know, the decision may have been, "let's bring up the goalie that's the best in shootouts; then we'll start LaBarbera and if we get to shootouts, pull him." (I am exactly half-kidding.)
Two observations: 1. Quick coming up for a stretch means Bernier gets the heavy work at Manchester. Ersberg isn't coming back anytime soon from a groin injury. He needs it to fully heal. JB has a chance to show the organization how far he's come in terms of being able to be the proverbial number one guy.
2. Quick has earned a spot. He's worked hard, improved his technique (per DL) and the coaches can now see if that improvement translates to him cutting it at the NHL level.
I see nothing wrong with those two messages.
I was at the game last night and it seemed like the team changed when Barbs got in net. It may just be my own observation, but it seems like they loose confidence when JLB is in net and that scares me to death. Ersberg just seems to calm things down and that is what this team needs right now. The three goals that Barbs let in where all ones that he could have and should have stopped. It's just painful to watch him flop around in there!
I agree with sparky. It really did seem as though they changed without Ersberg. Of course, Labs letting a shorthanded goal in didn't help too much. There is one thing to remember though. At least its not Aubin who is left. Remember last season when Labs was out and it was Aubin and Quick. I was so greatful for Quick and wanted him in every time. Though, I doubt TM will watch tapes of him last year considering all his issues with that earlier this season.
I'm an Isles fan and watched your team last night. You competed down to the end with the best team in the NHL. Would your GM just get a goalie already? I mean you haven't had a good goalie since I can remember. Get Khababulin!!! Why not! He has one year left on his contract and if you can re sign him why not? He can help young guys like Quick and Bernier in the future. We all know Ersberg and Labarbera are not in your plans 2 years from now. So please, get a goalie. You are a goalie away from making the playoffs. Why not! I'm beyond fired up over this. My team stinks so can a team I want to be good actually do something to help their situation?
GOOD!! Quick IS better than Bernier Anyways!!!...Now here is to sending calder and gauthier and labable down to meet avery in whatever league will take them
