Quick postgame quotes
Here's the postgame interview Jonathan Quick did with Bob and Jim...
(on whether there was anything different in his game tonight...)
``No, not much. I think we came together and played a full 60 (minutes) tonight, which helped me out a lot. We played well yesterday, but we had a little extra today, and it went a long way.''
(on the timing aspect of the game for a goalie coming up from the AHL...)
``Just reading shots, picking up shots off the stick and passes, and the speed they're coming into the zone. You start to pick that up, and it's a bit easier to stop the puck.''
(on facing all the power plays in the third period...)
``Once again, our penalty kill, they did great. They did a great job blocking shots for me and cleaning up the rebounds that I did give up. I'm just glad to get the win, and the team has a little bit of momentum going back to L.A. against Columbus on Monday.''
(on developing good communication with the Kings' defensemen...)
``It has taken me a little more time than I wished, but we try to run the same system in Manchester that we do up here. I think we end up doing it a little bit different, but it's just a couple games and a couple practices, and I'll figure it out.''

In all honesty, I can't see how Quick gets demoted back down over Labs. What an incredible string of games he has put together and has definitely earned a spot for the rest of the season with the Kings. Let's be honest, the team looks more confident with anyone besides Labs in net, and Labs knows and shows it. Thanks for the memories Labs; and to quote Bob Segar, time to "turn the page".
this guy is a stud. no rebounds, absorbs shots, no panic in his play. its really refreshing to have a couple of guys in the back of the net who can actually play hockey.
he did look lost on a couple of shots, but mercifully, the d played great in front of him tonight.
On radio call in broadcast last night, Nick and Daryl kept defending labs against callers. They insist that it will be Quick who gets sent down and it will once again be Labs and Ersberg.
I just find that so hard to believe.
Labs self confidence is shot and it has shown. Quick is showing that he belongs up with the Kings.
Go with Ersberg and Quick please.
This was a total team effort. They had to play a total game to beat PHX.
PHX had the Kings number for some time, and it seemed they knew exactly how to win against the kings, specially Shane Doan. This guy was and is a King killer, except for tonight. This game should give the Kings much confidence. Now they know they have the ability to win games even against teams like the Coyotes, which they did not have much success for number of years. With soon return of Jack Johnson and Ersberg, it will give the team a great boost of confidence that should help them down the stretch, and perhaps a run to make the playoffs.
As for Quick he did what he had to in order for them to win this game. Hope he can continue this level of play until the return of Ersberg from IR.
I think it's goodbye to Labs. His days are numbered.
Glad to see the Khabibulin trade did not go through, an excellent decision by DL for not pulling the trigger on the trade.
Roger
maybe they are telling everyone to stay positive about labs just incase Quick falters and crashes. If he did, which seems highly unlikely, we'd almost have to go to labs, so further shattering his confidence from within the team would not be good for us.
But I listened to that too and was annoyed. I was in the car with my friend and we were shouting at the radio, "Admit it Daryl! labs sucks!"
Quick is taking full advantage of his chance, just like Ersberg did last year, and that is truly a pleasure to watch.
taz, jdm...
nick and darryl call a very good game broadcast. however, kings talk stinks. they avoid tough questions. they are practically homers with their answers. i've stopped listening to them all together. anyone who can say that jlb is good and that his play does not affect the team skating in front of them are full of crap and cannot be believed. they've lost me as a listener.
i watch nearly every kings game each season. maybe i miss 3 or 4 a year. i've been watching the kings since the late 80's. i understand what is happening on the ice. thier play is different with jlb in net. you don't have to be a psychologist to read the faces and the body language of the players to know when they have confidence in the their goalie and when they don't. nick and darryl get paid by the kings. if they trash their own players, they may not have a job. darryl would have to go back to hocking cars for a living.
don't waste your time with their post-game broadcast. you'll get better analysis about the game here on rich's website. it may be more crude, but it is accurate and un-censored.
I love how everyone is "Quick-Crazy."
It'll be awesome the next time he is shelled or hits a losing streak and everyone is either clamoring for JLB to get a start, or chicken-littling.
Quick played a good game tonight, but if you know anything about goaltending, you know you saw a goaltender get just about as lucky as he possibly can 3 or 4 times. His tracking tonight was NOT grade A by any stretch of the imagination.
Quick has two shut-outs in his first four games (first six career games). He has a GAA of 1.88 and a SV% of .933. At some point, Ersberg is coming back. In two games, or five, it's hard to say. But if Quick's numbers stay this good, there is just no way he's getting sent back down. Literally, not a chance. No one sends a hot goalie to the minors in the middle of a hot streak.
vq/lf: he already gave up 5 goals against Detroit, and nobody was clamoring for LaBarbera to start. There were two times when Quick lost sight of the puck. One of them, he had already made the point blank save. The other didn't result in a shot. (He did almost blow it on that race to the puck...I'll give you that one...)
As far as "luck," compare this to Jason LaBarbera's "they got the bounces tonight" quotes, which he gets to deliver virtually every post-game. If Quick was lucky, I'll take it.
(Is it even possible to get a shut out if you're not lucky?)
Bottom line: I don't think anyone is anointing Quick at this point, just enjoying the fact that he's playing well and the Kings won as a result.
No one sends a hot goalie to the minors in the middle of a hot streak.
Not exactly the same, but the Caps sent down Simeon Varlamov after a pair of very nice wins to start his NHL career. He's back up now but not expected to stay up once Brent Johnson is healthy again.
Dean Lombardi gave an interview with Helene Elliot of the LA Times about the goaltending situation, Quick, and Jack Johnson if anyone wants to read:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/hockey/nhl/kings/la-sp-kingsfyi27-2008dec27,0,408310.story
in games where ivanans scores the opening goal for the kings, quick has two shutouts. coincidence? yeah, probably.
How can you send down Quick after his two shutouts in such a short amount of time? You can't. LaBarbera has no lateral movement, no agility whatsoever. It's like he's playing on stilts! I despise all this over-sentimentality about players who don't deserve to be here. Labs is a great person, but he stinks as a goalie. Move on. Quick and Ersberg have proven that they give the team the best chance to win. End of story. If Dean isn't confident in either, then he can get Craig Anderson or Tomas Vokoun instead of scoffing and making it seem like it's so impossible. I've had it up to here with the way you've handled our goaltending, Lombardi!
Quick has to be sent down when Ersberg returns. That's the rule for emergency call ups. So, Quick will return to the minors.
I could see them sending him down. He does have a two way contract. I could see Kings fans yelling and screaming about it and comparing us to the Clippers who just wanna make money. I could see those same King fans watching a majority of the games rest of the way because we are all pretty much hardcore fans and wouldn't be posting here if we weren't. Good win for the Kings, good game for Quick. Whoever said when he gets shelled we'll be begging for JLB. Well, I rather be begging for Ersberg when Quick gets shelled or begging for Quick when Ersberg gets shelled. I don't wanna see JLB ever start a game for us again unless its in an emergency injury situation.
just good to see the kings get the win in the second game of the home and home regardless of who gets the win
Re: the article Telos posted.
I'm liking DL more, but why does he always make stuff up?
Quick is here because we have an injured goalie, not to get a look.
And, why is he always guffawing rhetorical questions at his interviewer? i.e. do you know of any goalies on the block?
Outside of us Kings fans, is there really anyone paying attention?
Why the half-truthitis?
It's sure looking like a good idea to NOT have made a deal for Khabs, though.
And we still have tons of cap space if he wants to try something.
When will someone ask him about Brendan Shanahan?
Or, if he's looking to make any deals for vets, youth, or prospects?
Quick and the team played well in front of him. Yes they were lucky a few times but honestly LA has been a victim of luck far more times then they had it in its favor this year (imho any team that plays against labs is lucky). This team needs to know who will be in the nets next year (its obviously not labs) so they need to give both Jonathon's a "look" at some point. If Quick can keep playing solidly then it makes no sense to send him back. I only hope he forces Deans hand to make a big choice about the roster.
Quick is here because we have an injured goalie, not to get a look.
It can't possibly be both? If it was just an injured goalie, they could've called up Quick to sit on the bench for 5-10 games or whatever. He was called up by Lombardi because they wanted to see him play.
Anonymous, re emergency call-ups:
I think there's just a form you have to fill out. Quick can stay if DL wants him to. (Even if that weren't the case, what's the difference? He's waiver-exempt; you could just "send him down" and then "recall him;" he wouldn't even have to leave his hotel room in El Segundo.)
Let me be the one who anoints Quick just like I did after the Detroit game. That anointing means replacing JBL. He has everything JBL does not, athleticism, composure, controll and confidence.
Vq/If, although I have never been a goalie, I will say this; If luck is killing two 5 on 3's, killing 9 powerplays and blocking shots he didn't see because he was in perfect position, not counting the fact he shut out Columbus, was the best player on the ice during the 2 to 1 loss, and played to the level of expectation under the circumstances against Detroit, I'd say he's one hell of a lucky player. Either way, if he's luck or somewhat good, I'd keep him around, because both are good for the Kings.
Ivan scoring, Kopitar diving to break up a play(with some help from O,Sull), Frolov backchecking on a breakaway, O'Sull skating with meaning, Zieller scraping with "the madman", how can you lose with this type of effort. This is why I love watching sports, seeing efforts like this makes me smile. As I've always said, for myself it's not stats, it's playing to your capabilities, it's playing to the level of talent god blessed you with. Last nights game was just an awesome display of want and desire. That's the type of game we should play most nights. I really enjoyed watching last nights game. Great job boys and please don't make TM call you all out again.
If Quick's game is based on Luck, I'll take it.
The Kings haven't seen a decent lucky streak in at least 15 years.
