Murray postgame quotes
KINGS HEAD COACH TERRY MURRAY:
(Re: game recap): "Well, when we have lost as many as we have, it's hard to be happy. Losing is hard and we have to get ourselves out of this. We're bringing a lot of the problems on ourselves with puck management. We're turning the pucks over and not getting enough pucks to the net. We have got to be hungrier, much hungrier than what we are."
(Re: lack of confidence): "That's been pretty clear, I think, over the last several games here, that we're not handling the puck well, passing it with authority, carrying the puck to generate something off the rush, and we're just refusing to put pucks to the net. That's a sign that we're really gripping the stick too tight.''

Ahh SHUT UP.
Be a man for once in your life and take some responsibilty for this.
When you arrived, the problem wasn't putting the puck in the net. By stressing defense, you've sacrificed your offense. And in return, Mr. Genius, your defense is beginning to fall apart as well.
Your beloved Gauthier plays like a little girl and turns over the puck more than Modry.
Once again he puts Kyle Calder on the top line for reasons I can't comprehend.
You're not a real coach. You're nothing but a trouble maker.
I'm tired and frustrated.
GOOD NEWS GUYS.
I'm going to Lake arrowhead this weekend with the family.
I know it might be difficult, but I won't be around until Monday evening.
So try to manage without me without crying.
Happy Martin Luther King weekend to you all.
Speaking of Kings, this team sucks.
Labs must be busting a gut laughing at us right now.
Murray and Lombardi traded their scapegoat.
Early in the season, we were in every game for the most part.
We thought the scoring would come around.
It's gotten worse.
I'm actually feeling sorry for Murray because he's looking down at his bench, and there's nothing there.
I think we're starting to see the team we all thought we'd see before the season started.
A bunch of kids adrift on an ocean without a rudder.
Lombardi told Murray this was the most difficult job in sports.
I'm wondering if Murray believes him now.
Once again we can't get through one game with the same lineup.
I've given up trying to make sense of it.
Hey, the bright side is that what's the worst that can happen?
We can't get kicked out of the league.
Mrbrett, where are you? I guess you were right. The Kings aren't good enough this year to make the playoffs.
They really had me fooled for a while.
Anthony, have a great weekend and try and forget about the Los Angeles Kings.
They definitely forgot about you when they started to shed payroll in order to look good for sale.
You owe them a few days without thinking about them.
Rich, is this a record for times shutout in a season?
I was watching the Caps-Pens game yesterday and as I watched I noticed something that both of those teams, but especially Washington, do that the Kings don't, and I think it is the key to the success they have. They move the puck around so quickly and get it on net or toward the net with amazing frequency. The Kings, on the other hand, seem to be playing in slow motion most of the time, telegraphing every single play they make, and letting shots pass them by constantly. Even when the Kings are taking shots they miss the net, as though they are all trying to score on every shot. Do you think Alex Ovechkin is trying to score every time he shoots? No way. He is trying to put the puck on net so the goalie will give up rebounds. He shoots it into the goalies leg pads where he can't hang onto it, leaving juicy scoring chances for his teammates. The Kings too often try to make the perfect play and that simply doesn't work. The Kings don't have any players anywhere near as talented as Ovechkin, so if he knows he can't score every time, but he can do his best to set up his teammates, then the Kings should be emulating that philosophy.
And when the other team gives them a gift, the Kings have to bury it. What the hell was with Brown missing on that 2-on-0? Kopitar set him up perfectly and Brown just shot it right into Conklin. That was simply ridiculous. Brown should be moved to the fourth line.
2008-2009 L.A. Kings Hockey: R.I.P.
Awful game all around, except maybe Simmonds.
This team is a serious funk. If no one has any answers, we might as well hire a sports psychologist to get their heads straightened out.
It doesn't seem like any of our coaching staff or players have the answers right now. Why don't we have someone help them find the answers. Our season is going down the drain these last two weeks.
Team meetings haven't helped. There is NO heart being shown. No one was playing until we were out of the game on the scoreboard. Army gets punched in the chops and no one responded. No urgency, no pride. Sad.
We suck. Nobody in a Kings uni seems to care, so why should I? I think I'll just get another beer...
Again, this is all a mental thing. TM has lost his teams respect. What does DL have to say about this? I would like to get his honest opinion as to what kind of style his team needs to play. Crap, he is the one who drafts, trades and signs these guys. Maybe he should take over the coaching reigns. Get a new coach for the powerplay (Kompon is clueless) and get the juices flowing again. I know I'm stretching it a bit, but what have we got to lose? Another 39 games is all! Torture all us diehards again for one more time. Heck, I'm kinda getting used to it. There, I've vented. OUT
I'd like to see at least this top line for sure:
POS-Brown-Frolov
Boyle-Kopitar-Calder
Simmer-Zus-Westie
Ivanans-Stoll-Army
Jack-Drew
Quincey-Greene
OD-Harrold
Ersberg (Quick played good but not great/bad)
Talent is mostly there, but coaches need to regain respect
(Seperate Brown and Kopitar for now, but give Brown more support)
(... having JD together will be a fresh opportunity to toke up the rest of the season)
I think Murray, and Lombardi if he's around, could do a lot to ease fears if he didn't look like he was dying in the press conference.
He looks absolutely out of ideas - spewing the same nonsense he was in the summer about garbage goals and physical presence.
I love an underdog as much as anyone but the Kings are actually making me "sad" as I watch them.
If Murray was taking this in stride and just telling the press that its the growing pains of a young team, I wouldn't think the situation is dire.
I find it almost impossible to believe that I may have been correct when I've hinted that Murray has no clue about coaching in today's NHL.
The look on his face is telling me he's lost.
I think Murray needs to drop the ego and get the skates on and teach these kids some hockey.
There's no excuse for the stupid mistakes that are creeping into every shift on the ice.
It's a young group. They need someone to show them how to succeed.
Maybe these kids need to learn to hate losing as a group. Quit being the punisher and let them win or lose on their own.
Teach them what you can and manage the lines (a little better), but ask your kids for some input. Don't be so sure they're not smarter than you think they are.
Man. I can't believe it's come to this.
They were humiliated tonight.
We need Larionov.
It got ugly, quick!
Anybody have any ideas? What's our next move?
Does TM have an excuse because he doesn't have the personnel? Or is it his fault he can't motivate the kids?
Do the players just stink or are they being held back by TM and his system? It's really all the same question, right?
I'm not sure TM will make it to the end of the year, not because of their record, but because in every category we are going backwards. There doesn't seem to be a upward learning curve anymore. Regression upon regression. Hard to keep your job when things are going like that.
I'm really disappointed with many of our players. Even if(and I'm not saying he is)TM is an idiot and is hard to play for, he sure has exposed some mentally weak individuals on our team. That's really the biggest disappointment for me. I had a great deal of respect for some of our players and they've let us down this year with their lack of effort and pride.
I think I'm going to step back for awhile, because I'm breaking my own rule.... I'm not having fun anymore watching this team. I'm actually getting upset watching the games. There's no need for that.
I think I'm going to start going to the Reign games and check out Zatkoff.
Duckhunter,
It may be just a lack of NHL personnel in adequate numbers.
It sucks you're starting to turn on the players.
I think they're doing as best as they can.
I don't think there's a lack of work ethic or pride, they just don't know what to do anymore.
If they press to be phisical, they get caught out and scored upon, or give up a PP.
If they lay back and try to be smart and responsible, they end up looking lazy when one of their teamates gets beaten.
I really can't believe it got this desperate, this quick. The way Murray looked after the game was not good. We "insidethekings" guys didn't create that with our criticism. That was the genuine look of a coach who doesn't know what to do anymore.
What does he say to the team now?
What will the lines be now?
Like you said, we're regressing in every area, with the possible exception of in goal. Ersberg was poor the other night, but Quick has looked good and calm throughout.
If Murray makes it through this it might work out to uphold that old cliche
"whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Maybe all this losing will sink in and these players will get so sick of the thought of losing they'll start playing like a predator every night.
There is a lot to be learned from losing.
I wish Murray looked like he believed that right now.
Let's put Mike Cammalleri on the top line, we need his sniping abilities.
Frolov - Kopitar - Cammalleri
Brown - O'Sullivan - Moller/Purcell
Calder - Handzsus - Simmonds
Ivanans - Armstrong/Boyle - Zeiler
We should also keep Lubomir Visnovsky on the ice at all times. He's quick, has the best first pass, and will lead the breakout out of the zone. Doughty could learn a thing or two from him on how to better utilize his teammates.
This also forces Gabe Gauthier or Matt Greene out of the lineup. These two dolts have no hockey sense whatsoever, and have no idea how to handle a puck. I'm sick and tired of seeing those two in our zone everytime they're on the ice.
Johnson - Visnovsky
O'Donnell - Doughty
Quincey - Harrold
Quick
Ersberg
Good game by Army and Calder tonight.Win the next three on the road, were right back in it.Get JJ,Drew, and Oscar back after the break and kick some ass.We have the talent, just need to dig in deeper.Dress Ivanans and Westgarth, put them on the same line with Army and let them loose.Everybody else, know your role.Drive to the net,and finish your checks.Talk trash and back it up.Lets go GODDAMMIT.
ETR,
I don't think I've turned on anybody, I'm just disappointed in some of our players. because I know they're better than whats being presented. On the other hand, there's a couple players I really enjoy watching. I absolutely love Simmonds. I love the fire and energy and determination he brings to the game every night. I know he doesn't bring the offense nightly, but he will continue to get better and he will be an all-star a few years down the line, I promise you on that one. I also like Quick. I told you that from the beginning. I really don't know what you look for in goalies when you rate potential, but I do know an athlete when I see one, and I saw it in him right away.
Yes, I agree with what you say about TM. Looks like he's looking for answers and that's not a good sign. Brings me back to the same question, why? Lack of good coaching or lack of good players(or the right players)?
WAIVE MODRY!!! I Mean Gauthier!!
Seriously...WAIVE HIM
I agree Duckhunter that you have to love the way Simmonds plays the game. He plays hard every shift. I think eventually the offense will come.
I don't know what's wrong with this team. They're not competing, and what's worse, they've become boring to watch! They don't play physical. It looks like sometimes they're giving a half-hearted effort forechecking.
I'm not going to blame the coach for everything that's going wrong. The idea was correct to get this team to play a defensively sound game. In the last couple of weeks, they are making more and more mistakes defensively. Maybe this is just one of those bad slides that we should have been expecting from this team all along. Our expectations were inflated because of the start that we had.
In my opinion this is a players issue. These guys, while young, are professionals and need to go out there and act like professionals. Bust your ass for 60 minutes and I can live with the results...good or bad. This BS of not competing is unacceptable. Detroit is a better team, but that doesn't mean we can't make it uncomfortable for them to come into our building and play us.
This road trip should be a telling one. We are getting closer to the deadline and if this is how they're going to play, it would make no sense to trade for a scorer. It would make sense to dump as much dead wood as possible. The Calder's, Preissing's, and other under achieving veterans need to be sent on their way elsewhere.
I never like to talk about trades or other players, but I wonder what it would take to pry a guy like Shane Doan away from Phoenix? That's the type of player this team needs more than a Kovalchuk. Someone who wears his heart on his sleave and comes to play every night.
Just what is it that prevents the forwards from making a move into the low slot with the puck? Every shot seems to be from the outside. Are they afraid to muck it up and get a few bruises to score some scrappy goals?
Late Oct into Nov Edmonton was 2 and 7. A little later they went 2 and 6. Phoenix has their 2 and 7's as well. Yes, these teams are not at the top of the conference but plenty of other teams go through slumps as well.
I was at the game last night and had to leave after two periods because I couldn't stand to hear a row of Wings fans behind me shouting in my ear about how bad we are for 20 more minutes. So I understand the frustration on this board. But if the Kings can put a few wins together then we are right back in it. That may be a big if, but I really believe this is a different team than we've seen the last three years. I really think it's possible that the team turns it around. There is too much young talent.
I'm not ready to hang DL or TM or any one else. No one projected anything for for this team than what it has done. They exceeded expectations for half a season. They are in a slump. One good game can change all that. Four wins in a row (which they have already done) and everyone will be singing a different tune.
First off, I tired of reading about how everyone says TM is "losing" the room, just because that has been the new hockey saying for the past couple of years. How about coming up with something original? Also, I really don't think it's TM's fault if the guys aren't playing hard enough, and I think it's a joke to say they aren't playing hard because they don't like the coach. DO THESE GUYS NOT HAVE ANY PRIDE IN THEMSELVES????? Why should the players have to "play" for a coach? Do you think they like being the losers of the league and the joke of the league year in and year out? I can guarantee you they don't, they just don't have enough skill on this team yet to put together a winning season right now, it wouldn't matter if Scotty Bowman was coaching. I don't care what anyone says, this season has still been a success in terms of how we did last year, and what was expected of us this year before the season started. Did any of you REALLY think we were going to make the playoffs this year? REALLY? I know it's frusterating watching our team lose but come on, enough with the whining already, it's pathetic. I stopped going to the boards on LetsGoKings because of this exact reason. All people do is cry and blame DL, then they decide to blame TM, then O'Sullivan, then Labarbara, then Gauthier, then Armstrong, Zeiler, Ivanans or whoever made the biggest mistake last game. I really thought the Kings fans had a lot of class for sticking with this team throughout a 40 year drought, but now I'm beginning to see everyone is a bunch of whiners and cries when things don't go their way. The Pengiuns have been the worst team in hockey (yes worse than the Kings) for the past month and you don't hear even half as much crying from their fans...
Anyway, for Rich's sake, I'll still come to the website and read his articles and see what he has to say, but I think I have to stop reading the comments section because it just makes me want to stuff my Kings jersey in a closet and never admit I'm a Kings fan. Not becasue of how the team is playing, but because of how their fans are acting....
I too think that TM needs point at himself now and then rather than always blaming the players.
It's not relevant who's at fault, just be a responsible and respectable coach and take the bullett once in awhile.
A good coach will often take the blame for not having his team ready and so forth but I haven't seen that out of TM.
He just loves to place blame on his team and throw certain people under the bus.
That's how I see it.
Anyone know how long TM is signed on for?
I now know the reason why people do not like the Red Wings, because of their smug fans who believe their team can do no wrong. Unfortunately at times it seems as though the Kings fans are the exact opposite where the team can do no right. I have not read any comments after this last game and I would like to point out the positives that I noted: 1) The Kopitar, Brown, O'Sullivan/Calder line did not get scored against. They played a defensively sound game and it seemed like they controlled the puck more than the Zetterberg line (of course I might be mistaken about that) and 2) the Kings killed off both the 2 minute and the 4 minute penalty when Stoll had broken his stick.
Correct me if I'm wrong but is this not the same thing we heard from Crawfish for 3 yrs. We either have the wrong coach or the wrong players. I think its a little of both. This is the same thing they said about San Jose while Lombardo was there. Skilled guys with no heart. No toughness or killer instinct, UNTIL he left and they made the big trade for Thorton. I think the Kings need that type of trade. I love all the young guys we have, Brownie is my favorite but I think he is the wrong guy for Captain. The problem is we don't have the right guy on our team now. We need someone who can change the culture of this team even if its costs us a JJ and Fro. Someone who holds each player accountable, that guy you don't want to face in the locker room if you didn't work hard that night or period.
Why is everyone giving up now? It's true that they aren't playing well at all right now. And no, there is probably no chance that they are going to make the playoffs this season. But how long have you all been Kings fans? Personally I've been a Kings fan for 21 years. My first hockey memory was watching Gretzky pull that jersey on at the press conference. I was 8 years old. By '93 when they made the finals, I was hooked. There were plenty of bad years and bad players (Matt Johnson come to mind), and now that there is hope that they might be a decent team everyone is on board. But as soon as they falter a bit, everyone is jumping ship.
Everyone seems to be talking about the Kings not having pride in themselves. Why don't we all try to have some pride in ourselves as fans? And have some pride in our team, even when they don't seems to hav any themselves. How many of you have children? When your son or daughter does something wrong, do you yell at them and cast them aside like yesterday's newspaper? No, you forgive them and continue loving them no matter what. Maybe if we, as fans, can show the team that we care even when they are struggling, they'll know we're behind them and play that much harder.
This team is close. Don't give up yet. The best is yet to come.
sense13
Who did TM throw under the bus in his comments?
Why should he blame himself? Did he go out there and give half hearted effort? Did he fail to chase the puck deep in the offensive zone and forecheck? Did he fail to pick up the open man in front of our net?
It's time we stop blaming the coach and the GM and blame the players.
All last year we heard how they quit on Crawford...now this year its they quit on Murray. Apparently we have a bunch of quitters on our team...or at least that's what everyone seems to feel. I don't believe the players are quitters...just young kids who need to learn how to win and compete on a nightly basis.
Responsibility falls on the players and nobody else. I don't care whether the coach blames himself or the Lord for our poor play. the only one's who can do anything to change it are the players themselves.
Matt,
First of all, easy on the estrogen. =)
I didn't read all the posts so, I don't know which poster(s) hinted/said they were going to give up on the kings but if they feel that way, they're not true kings fans to start with, so let them. I've been a fan since the 70s and the thought of "giving up" has never entered my mind. Frustration? Yes. Anger? Definitely. But I would never EVER give up on our boys.
nykingfan,
The latest to be thrown under the bus would be Stoll but others such as Preissing, Fro, Sully etc could also be considered.
I don't think we have a bunch of quitters but I do think that players are tired of TM's instant reward and instant punishment coaching ways. He's treating our players like they're a bunch of kids. Give them the benefit of doubt once in awhile, cut them some slack. It's absolutely childish.
For instance, last night Calder was instantly rewarded because he went strong to the net. Whoopti fockin doo! Do you really think that players give a crap who plays on the first line anymore? Heck, as soon as you make one mistake, it's back to the fourth line or just simply sit. Do you think that players are getting the correct message? They are more likely to roll their eyes and shut TM out. Like I said before, TM needs to communicate more effectively because his way is not working.
damn...just finish typing a comment and my friggin systems shuts off before i submit it.
Matt,
Nobody here is giving up on the Kings. If we did, we wouldn't have bothered to waste our time watching the game last night, which for me ended around 1:00am...especially when I have to get up for work a few hours later.
I wasn't singing kumbaya at 1:00 after watching them get drubbed 4-0. I was pissed!
I have kids and when they're bad, I let them know its not acceptable. I don't believe in praising poor behavior, or poor play for that matter. It has nothing to do with loving your kids or the Kings.
Sense13
I understand your point, but you're giving these players way too much credit. In all honesty, and I love my team, but they are a bunch of never-won-a-things. Most of them for their entire careers have spent the time on the bottom of the standings succeeding only at losing most nights.
If we are to believe that last year they tuned out Crawford and got him fired...and this year, they're doing the same to Murray, then we have a bigger issue than we could have ever imagined.
If you're right, then we made a HUGE mistake in signing Brown and Kopitar to long term contracts because they are the problem. They are the leaders on this team. If as you say they have tuned Murray out, then it can't just be one or two guys, it would have to be pretty much the whole team. If that's the case, then Brown and Kopitar not only would know about it, but condone it as well. If they really are coach killers, why do we want them on this team?
I don't believe that's the case at all.
Before we throw the entire team, coaching staff and management under the bus...look at what Pittsburgh has done in the last 10 games...2-8-0 that includes a nice 5 game losing streak. Last year's Stanley Cup Finalist with a couple of the best forwards in the League. Most teams will go through this funk.
Last night's game could have been different if Conklin hadn't stoned Brown and Purcell in the opening period...but just like that...two turnovers and the puck is in the back of our net.
It difficult to watch this team play. I have seen pick up games with more emotion on the ice than this team shows.
For professionals they don't seem to understand they are playing to put a$$e$ in the seats.
They play an uninspired game that is not fun to watch. They have gone back to dump and chase. Around the endboard and back to the opposing team. They pass when they should shoot and shoot when they should pass and when they shoot it is right into the goalies Logo.
How many shut outs? Goal per game average?
GO! Kings GO!
Sense13
Because I base all my comments and knowledge on this blog right? And yes, I'll lower my estrogen dose right away. Is there something wrong with suggesting that we stand behind our team? I like how you put a smiley face after an insult like that's supposed to make it better.
Obviously I don't mean that EVERYONE is giving up. I am fully aware there are plenty of fans like myself that won't ever give up.
nykingfan,
I wouldn't suggest praising poor behavior/play. Just standing behind the team through the bad times.
If my perception is off, then I apologize for voicing an opinion.
nykingfan,
I understand where you're coming from but just because most guys on our team have never won a SC doesn't mean that they don't know how to win.
Hey, I hope I'm wrong about TM, I really do. Heck, maybe all we need is a one feisty game against the stars to put us back on track. Dress both Raitis and Westgarth and let them goon it up.
Matt,
The smiley face was there to let you know that I was joking, not necessarily trying to make you feel better. Was I poking fun at you? Yeah. Did I mean to make it personal? Of course not.
Hey but I'll make a mental note for myself to never to poke fun at you.
I truly don't believe they know how to win in the NHL. Remember last month when they were blowing 3rd period leads? It wasn't just a one night thing. they were doing it in bunches. It seemed as if they couldn't get themselves out of the funk. Maybe because they've never gotten themselves out of it before here.
Its not a knock on them, but since they've been with the Kings, they have never won anything. It's going to take time and a lot of patience for us fans, but TM has come from a winning atmosphere and I think he can instill that into this team. I think if we leave him alone, we'll see an improvement by the end of the year. If not, then maybe you're right and he needs to go.
Matt R
I'm with you man, I'll never give up on this team. I'll continue to suffer like I have for so long because when we finally do win, nothing will compare to the joy we'll all feel. It will all be worth it.

Can I just say, "I'm sick of reading comments like these," without getting deleted?
Where were you last night after the game?
Why do you feel the need to talk about comments and not the game?
Who cares if you don't want to read the comments any more?
I don't want to read yours.
If it's not about the hockey team or the hockey game, why is it left up? Just to antagonize an already frustrated fan-base?
How about YOU wake up and start to hold the Coach and GM accountable for the team they built and are coaching instead of taking your frustrations out on other frustrated Kings fans.
You don't even discuss the issues, you just whine about comments you don't like.
KINGS played like garbage last night. They are slow, They have no energy. They look like a bunch of girls in the corners. They dont like going after loose pucks. It just looks like they are over it.
I think the onus really falls on the players here since the same system allowed us to be competitive at the beginning of the season when we were getting the effort/focus from them.
Somebody mentioned this before, but I think the absence of Oscar Moller may be one of the key reason for the recent slide. He fills an important role on the top 2 lines with his strong 2 way play. And now with DD being out, there is a big hole on defense as well. I think when we they come back, you will see the same competitive team that we saw at the beginning of the season.
But this shouldn't be an excuse for the players who are healthy. Where did the effort/competitiveness go?
AK: I think we are getting to a crucial point in his development... he has Forsberg type potential but will he turn out to be Josef Stumpel?
Frolov: Seems to go missing for games at a time. Is this why DL never seems to mention him as a core player? Has all-star talent but will he turn out to be another Khristich?
DB: Can't question his effort/heart on most nights. I think the pressure of being captain may getting to him. Maybe it would be a good idea for TM to assign the "C" to someone else? Maybe Zeus or OD?
POS: Has been inconsistent all season. Maybe he just needs the stability of remaining with the same players for a while.
I think if these 4 players were playing anything close to their potential, we would be looking at a playoff spot right now.
Dude, Louis Erickson has as many goals this season in Dallas as O'Sullivan had all last year.
Same for Hudler.
Its the LA Kings that are the problem - from top to bottom.
It always has been and always will be.
I think Craig Conroy would be our leading scorer right now if he were reacquired.
In the NHL, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, its actually the LA Kings.
Go figure...
The lack of confidence I believe started with Kopitar a couple of weeks ago and it has spread to the other players on the Kings. Kopitar, Brown and Sully are in a scoring slump. With that the split second hesitation on taking the shots at the moment that counts to score goals but instead passing the puck off to another player. Another problem the kings of late have been out of position for scoring on easy rebounds in front of the goal. The curse of lack of confidence have infected the goal tenders that two weeks ago looked like all-star tandem goal-tenders that the kings need to contend. Terry Murray has to get his players back on their confidence that was there a couple of months ago. That is the trick that few coaches have success in acomplishing, I hope Terry can do it because he seems to be a great coach.
