Wednesday update

Just had a quick chat with Terry Murray. Highlights included…

– Dustin Brown is scheduled to rejoin the team for tomorrow’s practice in Detroit, after which his status for Friday’s game will be determined. Murray reports that all is well on the home front for Brown.

– Erik Ersberg will start in goal tonight, which was the plan since the start of the trip. The Kings didn’t arrive in Philadelphia until 3:30 a.m. today.

– Murray had praise for Teddy Purcell’s game and said the challenge is for Purcell to maintain the play, something he wasn’t quite able to do in his first stint with the Kings.

– Murray was pleased with the new Doughty-Johnson pairing, and said he made the change because he thought the Greene-Johnson pairing needed to be shaken up a bit.

– Despite all his time in Philadelphia, as a player and coach, Murray is not a fan of cheesesteaks or hoagies. He said he prefers some of the great fish in town. Don’t you just hate healthy people?

I’ll be posting some quotes on all this stuff soon, and come on by for the chat this afternoon.

    Wow..

“Murray was pleased with the new Doughty-Johnson pairing, and said he made the change because he thought the Greene-Johnson pairing needed to be shaken up a bit.”

That’s an understatement. Johnson/Greene sucks ass. Don’t know why that is, but they don’t play well together. Missed assignments all over the place.

Hopefully my opinion of Johnson (which is pretty low at this point) changes with this shake-up. Either that or Doughty will make it even more apparent that JJ needs to work on his coverage.

Good luck to the Iceberg. Both teams played in different cities last night, so I presume the team which tires last will be the victor.

I’m going to make a Mark Messier type prediction/guarantee for tonight. Raitis Ivanans to get a hat trick tonight.

The best cheesesteak isn’t even in Philly. It is across the river in New Jersey. Not affiliated in any way to the famous one in Philly, Pat’s Pizza in Woodbury, NJ has the best cheesesteaks and makes a mean cheesesteak stromboli too.

  • Reb

I love that he commented about his favorite Philly food. 3:30am seems pretty late. Wonder if the flight was delayed.

  • variable

    yeah…
    that arrival time….yikes…!

hopefully they won’t be too weary…it might not effect them as much today as it probably will on friday…

counting the game last night…the kings will play 7 games in 12 nights/days…that’s a big load…i hope they get their zzzzz’s…!

if you haven’t noticed, Greenie’s strengths are not in his skating ability. This does not bode well when paired with a free skating, offensive minded defencemen like JMFJ. If Jack gets up ice and there is a quick turnover – which has been the case on numerous occasions – Greenie is often left a step behind the attacker and often leading him to take the hooking penalty.

You better play well Ersberg or its back to the SEL! Stay in your net and dont try any stupid interference plays. Oh and Drew, DONT PASS THE PUCK SOFTLY AT THE BLUELINE!

  • Josh

I love Johnson but he goes for a hit before defensive positioning…i dont know if anyone else remembers but we gave up a 2 on 1 last night because jack johnson went to check the opposing player in the offensive zone just after he got rid of the puck…left drew out to dry!

  • Ersberg

How can you not like a good cheesesteak every once in a while? That’s almost like saying you don’t like beautiful women.

  • OCKINGFAN

    ARE YOU SERIOUS?

    “STICK WITH QUICK”
    Thats my new saying

  • Quisp

Cheesesteak @Philly West, on Westwood Blvd.

Josh, re “I love Johnson but he goes for a hit before defensive positioning”:

That’s what a year of Rob Blake tutelage will get you.

3:30 AM: The game ended at 9:45 CT, figure an hour or so to pack up all the gear and leave the arena makes it 11 CT. Another hour getting to the airport and taking off (and thats if theyre on a charter — dont know how the Kings travel, charter or commerical). Departure, midnight CT. 2 & hour flight to Philly, one hour time difference = 3:30.

I always wonder in these situations if its better to stay overnight in the city youre playing in, get to bed at a reasonable, normal hour and then travel on game day to the next city or travel as the Kings did and get into the next city at 3:30 and into bed at 4 or 5 AM?

  • Ersberg

I’m in Irvine, so I got to the one in Lake Forest. Good stuff, Quisp.

    Speaking of Blake..

I like SJ suddenly becomes awesome with him on their blueline. I know other guys have a lot to do with their added success, but at least he could have not sucked last season.

  • Quisp

    Ersberg, re Blake:

He’s much better when he’s not counted on to be the hub of the defense. However, SJS has had to face exactly this amount of adversity this season:

    Zero.

God help them if they lose a game in the first round. All those ghosts. Whoever the Sharks face in the first round, if they don’t sweep the series I think they’ll choke.

  • Josh

blake is having a lot of success in san jose because he’s playing with players that put the puck in so often! If i passed the puck to thornton or marleau I could rack up assists also!

  • brianguy

I agree, Blake has never really been an assist machine before. maybe, arguably, in Colorado. but not all those other seasons.

“I always wonder in these situations if its better to stay overnight in the city youre playing in, get to bed at a reasonable, normal hour and then travel on game day to the next city or travel as the Kings did and get into the next city at 3:30 and into bed at 4 or 5 AM?”

too risky – I’m sure the NHL discourages it. if a team’s travel gets delayed or doesn’t work out the night before, the worst is they sleep in an airport hotel. if their travel doesn’t work out on game day, they’re rested but screwed. plus, by staying the night there is no time for the morning skate when you’re travelling the next AM.

blame the schedule makers for this one. you shouldn’t ever have to play in another city an hour ahead, the night following a road game.

Quisp, haven’t had (or heard of) Philly West, but I’m gonna check it out. I’ve yet to have a real cheesesteak on this coast. What’s all this Provolone crap? Where’s the Cheddar/American!?!

Every place I’ve been to in this town that calls something a Cheesesteak is always more like a Steak sandwich with some cheese and junk… NOT THE SAME THING!

“Dustin Brown is scheduled to rejoin the team for tomorrow’s practice in Detroit, after which his status for Friday’s game will be determined”

Is there really any doubt that Brown plays against Detroit if he’s there for practice tomorrow?

  • JDM

rrr…. the anonymous cheesesteak rant coming up is from me.

  • Abe

    brianguy:

Good points about NHL discouraging game day travel and the part about being screwed if travel doesn’t go right on game day. Though, I would think getting in at 3:30 they may not do a morning skate. Also, great point that a team shouldnt have to play an hour ahead on the next night. I know schedules/arenas are tight, but it’s ridiculous to play in Minnesota on Tues and Philly on Wed.

  • Ersberg

Well, if you want the real deal, and you’re in OC, hit up Philly’s Best.
