FINAL: Kings 1, Senators 0

| | Comments (54) |

Michal Handzus scored with 2:39 remaining in regulation to give the Kings the victory. Wayne Simmonds worked the puck out of the corner to Handzus, who was all alone behind the net and scored on a quick wraparound.

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves for his third shutout of the season (and his career), and had to help kill a late 6-on-4 penalty after a dubious interference penalty was called on Jack Johnson.

Consensus on game MVP seemed to be split between Handzus and Quick, with honorable mentions going to Drew Doughty and Wayne Simmonds.

The Kings were outshot 29-26 but came back fairly strong in the third period after a second-period slumber. Kyle Calder had a team-high four shots on goal and Jarret Stoll was credited with four hits.

Great call Rich;

Quick and Simmonds were great!

We dodged a couple bullets in front midearly but the boys played a good game. That one rush by Simmods when he beat the D was truly inspired, he is showing some wheels now just keep it goin.

1st perion the Kings came on a rush with DD that I have been waiting a long time to see. 4 guys on the rush!

Keep it comming!

We were very lucky tonite.Quick was great and we got a few bounces. One of those games again, no forcheck to speak of untill the last eight mins.We were on our heals all night. We better be moving forward against Wash. or it could be a long nite. Two big points, keep it going Kings.

Josh said:

i love frolov...but how often is he gonna miss a breakaway...honestly...

Josh, I think this time it was no fault of his own for missing. He was under a lot of pressure with that back checker. It isn't like a clear cut breakaway. Unless, you are talking about a different time other than the short handed attempt.

Garrett said:

Seriously Josh, you're gonna be upset at Fro for that one? It was amazing he even got that breakaway. He really didn't have any shot there. The two against Montreal were pretty bad (and the countless others this season) but that one I thought was pretty legit.

Dan H. said:

I'll take the two points. They tried to screw the Kings with that ticky tac call at the end. At least take them both. Jack did cut in front but that guy clearly grabbed him and hauled him down. Man do they go blind up in Canada or what?

Good job, Kings.

Thanks for the live chat, Rich, was great.

Side note, totally unrelated, the Stars won again tonight. Man, I really dislike that team.

Gentlemen, please keep your Canada bashing comments to yourself. Keep in mind there are passionate Kings fans north of the border as well.

Anyways, I have to say Doughty was a monster tonight, as was Simmonds (when he actually got to play). Other than that.. pretty sloppy play. I did notice Kopitar actually showed up in the third. I wish he would play like that more often..

dmh012 said:

As a Canadian Kings fan, I totally agree with Dan H. The calls the last two games were bad. I know they try to do their best, but sometimes they do seem blind to certain teams, Kings could avoid this by being up more than 1 goal.

The kids are playing very well right now. Can not wait for Moller to be in the line-up.

Rookies have driven this team. Doughty, Moller, Simmonds, Quick, Westgarth(sp.??) and now Drewiske (I have not forgotten Bernier but he has yet to play). This team is set for years. I would still like a scoring winger, but that will come.

Go Kings!!!

CanadianKing, I live in Saskatchewan, and even I'm sick of the reffing in Canada. Its a joke. If Ottawa were to score on that 6 on 4, I would have beat the crap out of either my wife or my dog. I'm still not over the Montreal game. Thank the good lord they are out of here for a while and get hopefully get some non-biased reffing. Kopitar had his best game in a while I thought, and I still love the Stoll, Calder, brown line. Give Calder an extension already!!!! He has played great the last 10-15 games. Well, except for the stupid penalties against Montreal. Drewiske played decent too for his first game.

Marty said:

Another solid outing by Quick. Drewiske looked steady as well, for his 1st NHL game.Bad giveaways by DD ,SOD and Quincey nearly killed us.Terrible call on JJ,Foligno blatantly grabbed JJ and fell to the ice.And yes the refs seem to be bias in Canada,I believe the announcers also add to their homerism.Up front again lack of finish is noticable.Team seemed to roll better playing 3 lines.Quick saved the Kings asses this time and we will take it.

You should uhhhhh...work on that...

I thought Calder was garbage in this game. Maybe his one awful turnover is clouding my judgement.

Pretty mediocre game for the Kings, Quick and the posts bailed them out. At least the Sens suck too. Seemed almost like they were looking past this one to the game against Washington, which is understandable but not excusable.

I last comment tonite. WHY can`t they just keep the cameras back alittle and let us enjoy the game. The league tries so hard to sell hockey, leave the game alone PLEASE!

Bring Back the Shield Jersey Author Profile Page said:

2 pts is 2 pts, but boy was that game tough to watch. Not only did both teams look bad overall but the camera coverage was terrible. Quite often the puck (and puck carrier) was out of the shot. Surprisingly poor considering it was a Canadian production, and they invented the game doncha know?

And nice to see the continued lack of consistency in TM's dog house. No 4th line duty for Calder after his two stupid, totally within-his-control penalties vs Montreal. Way worse than what Stoll did.

What in the world was O'Donnell doing all game? He kept passing the puck directly to the other team that was alone in front of our net?!! At least three times he did this. First Gauthier and now O'Donnell, great its a virus or something......

4thlinechecker said:

I dont know about giving him an extension, but Calder had a decent game, and had an outstanding game against montreal with the penalties aside.

Simmonds is a stud, give it a few years and he will learn to score, just like it took Brown a few years.

Doughty is simply amazing.

Wasnt pretty but we got 2 points!

I'm looking forward to being in attendance in Jersey... I was there last year, when Boyle scored on his first shift...

As for tonight, there were some real shifts in momentum... Kings in the first, Sens in the second, Kings hung tough in the third and were rewarded by a real lapse in coverage on Handzus. I'm sure Clouston will be fine tuning that in the future... and he'd better get his GM, BM to get him some secondary scoring. That team has fallen into the abyss quicker than Dan Cloutier gave away goals on the first shot of the game...

Two tough points out of a possible four, not bad but it could have been better. We're out of Canada now and have two tough games ahead. Here comes the real tests. HUGE win in Ottawa despite the ever putrid officiating in Canada. Great job by the team and extra kudos to Quick.

Still so pissed about Montreal. It was interference against Higgins then, it is now, and will always be interference ...and a nonvictory for the Habs.

It was the battle of the offensively challenged out there. Not terribly physical, not incredibly fun to watch. The two points were the only thing that made watching it worthwhile.

CanadianKing I'm actually a fan of your country, and respect that fact that hockey is your national sport. However, the officiating in Canadian venues is often slanted toward the home team. I can't seem to let go of that painful loss in Montreal. It all came rushing back with that late call this afternoon.

Nick, I agree with your take on domestic violence, but Calder is playing his best hockey of the year. I'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities to talk smack, but for now lay off the guy. Those cross checking calls in Ottawa were ticky-tac at best. I'd be much more concerned with getting kopi back to his old form.

I'm going Sat night with some friends to the NJ game... Do you know anything about those $10 tickets??? We're going to try and get some, I'm just not sure how early we need to get there.

nykingfan Author Profile Page said:

Shakes...I think I'll be going to the Islander game on Tuesday.

Quick got us the 2 points last night. He was sharp from the opening faceoff..and he needed to be with the disgusting turnovers all night. Incredibly boring hockey game for the most part.
Officiating was terrible once again. The call on JJ blew my mind, especially coming off the Montreal debacle. Great job on the PK.
Doughty was outstanding. He never should have gotten that tripping penalty either. He got the puck first. The refs usually don't call that.

One thing I've noticed recently is TM seems comfortable with the lines. He hasn't been switching them up quite as often. I wish the Kopitar/Sully/Fro line would score like a top line. I think once that happens on a more consistant basis, the lines should flow well. It would make the Brown/Stoll/Calder line a solid #2 line. The Zeus/Simmonds/Richardson line was the best line last night.

3 games remaining on the road trip. I think at a minimum, we are going to need 3 points. You would figure 2 against the suddenly hot Islanders. It's going to be tough getting points in Washington and NJ. They are going to need to play a lot better than they did last night.

laikaloco said:

I'm going to all three of the games remaining on this trip...sec. 116 in Washington, 126 in NJ and 227 in Long Island. I'll either be wearing a Frolov home or Doughty third to those games. Stop and say hi if you see me.

Quick stole two points last night. I don't think I've ever seen worse passing by a professional team...well, maybe the ECHL, but it's close. It's like everybody went color-blind and just had to pass to the red shirts instead of the white. That better get cured FAST, cuz the Washington and NJ red shirts ain't gonna miss like the Ottawa's did.

So Calder gets a few points finally and some people want him resigned you gotta be kidding me. My only hope is some team is gullible enough to take him off ours hands in March. What happens when Oscar is ready, back to the 4th line?

Bring Back the Shield Jersey Author Profile Page said:

I'm not saying Calder is playing badly. Heck his hustle on the forecheck, being able to come away with the puck from the corner, and effort to get either himself or the puck to the slot have been integral to CBS line's recent success. Ottawa put it's top defensive pair against this line cuz it's doing so well. (Which makes it worse that O'Kopitov got nothing last night.)

But here's TM's response to Stoll's penalty:
"I didn't like Stoll's over-the-glass penalty that put us down 5-on-3. I thought there was plenty of time to get that puck and have some composure as a veteran player and just clear the zone." And it wasn't a good penalty and it did hurt the Kings. But did he mean to do it? No.

Calder, even more of a veteran than Stoll, showed neither composure nor smarts taking either of those X-checking penalties but especially the second one, and he clearly meant to shove the opponents with his stick. And of course, Montreal scored the winning goal with Calder in the box. Horrible penalty.

On all three variable given by TM-veteran, composure, negative effect-Calder fares worse, yet he's not punished. TM didn't call out Calder, didn't demote him, didn't shrink his ice-time. Nothing. Inconsistency from the top is bad leadership, ruins credibility, and undermines team morale. If TM was brought in as a teacher, what was the lesson learned?

One thought on why Calder might not have been benched after those 2 penalties is we are short quality forwards right now with Moller out. Also that line has been our best line recently. He probably didn't want to mess with that. The Stoll penalty was a situation where he had time to think about what he was going to do with the puck to clear it...and ended up shooting it over the glass with no pressure. Calder's was more of a reactionary play.
Going back to the Calder cross checks...the 2nd was the one that pissed me off to no end. I understand that he was trying to create some space in front of the net...but after you get caught the 1st time, you repeat the same mistake again?

someonewhocares said:

I agree with the comment about Frolov missing breakaways. It's great that he is getting chances, and he has been our best forward. But seriously, he gets so many effin breakaways, and he just doesn't bury them enough of them in my opinion. The one in this game was not a clean breakaway, but still.

smokiemcpot said:

I have to agree with nykingsfan on Calder. I think that demoting him from that line or benching him would have gotten rid of our best line for the rest of the game and I don't think TM would do that. Also I think some guys might have thinner skin than others and benching him might have made him less effective in the long run.

As, for ryan oliver with the whole "If Ottawa were to score on that 6 on 4, I would have beat the crap out of either my wife or my dog" comment. Not sure what you were trying to do there but that sh*ts not fun. Domestic violence and animal cruelty happen everyday and to just joke about it is a bit crass. People and animals die because it. If you were serious get some help or get rid of your wife and dog.

Anyways, I think Simmonds has been awesome. Put him back next to Fro and Kopi. Sully hasn't done anything since being on that line and it is not a threat as he is obviously in a slump. Let him earn his way back up. Other than that I like the lines as they are. Drewskie was silent this game which means he didn't make any big mistakes. Looks like we can now give away Goat and Prei$$ing.

Folks, that was a penalty on JJ for interference. He left his skating lane and impeded the Ottawa player. Doesn't matter that he wrapped is arm around and pulled JJ down. JJ initiated the contact and deserved the penalty. So enough about the refs going blind. It was an obvious call. I love my Kings to death but I do it with a sense of sportsmanship and by the rules.

While I agree with your assessment, your forgetting one small thing.

Especially at the time, Stoll was playing like dog crap, and right now Calder is playing very well. Hard to bench a guy, when you need points, who has been one of your best forwards over the last 10 games. Regardless of what the pundits around here think, Calder has been playing well.

couple of quick things:
1) Ethman i think the $10 tix are released like early in the morning, but you know i don't know how it works on a weekend game

2) as far as the terrible cameras last night, i think that they must have been using their HD feed for the regular broadcast so we would get the ends of the screen cut off...hence on normal tv for us on Center Ice you'd never seen the guys in at the point

But none the less, those were two huge points for us. I was actually surprised to see at least 30 Kings fans at the game. Being a 20 year fan, I had never met another Kings fan before so it was kind of neat.
