L.A. hockey ideas

| | Comments (29) |

Thanks for the great input... Here are the four ideas I submitted to The Hockey News...

1. Pull off a hat trick that can only be accomplished in Southern California. Start the morning in Wrightwood with some skiing at the Mountain High resort, then drive 95 miles and go surfing in the afternoon at Venice Beach. Then drive 15 miles, downtown, to Staples Center for a Kings game.

2. Visit Bob Miller's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 6763 Hollywood Blvd. Miller, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, has been the Kings' television play-by-play announcer since 1973. Two other iconic Los Angeles sports announcers, the Dodgers' Vin Scully and the Lakers' Chick Hearn, have been honored on the Walk of Fame.

3. Cruise Manhattan Beach and go autograph hunting. Even though Los Angeles is known for its suburban sprawl, many of the Kings players live in the exclusive city near the beach, southwest of downtown L.A., and are often seen out in the community.

4. Have a pregame double chili-cheeseburger at Tommy's, then visit the Wayne Greztky statue outside Staples Center, next to the statues honoring Magic Johnson and Oscar de la Hoya.

And since it came up, let's settle this. Vote for one. No other answers will be accepted.

In-N-Out por vida

The choices are lame. Both are franchises and neither are the best.

"Father's Office" in Santa Monica.

No one has mentioned the Pantry, and that is just a block or two down from Staples, and never closes.

In-N-Out vs. Tommy's isn't fair.

I've NEVER EVER seen anything special about an In-N-Out burger. They're just burgers. They taste like fast food. The number of ways you can have them is fun - but they're still just a standard burger. I really don't understand people who think they're something special.
Best burgers I ever had were at TimToms in Valencia. Alas, TimToms is no more.

Clearly Apple Pan.

I love In-N-Out and Tommy's but those of you who live in the Valley owe to yourselves to try the Habit.

That is a really good burger that I'm starting to prefer over all others.

There is one in Encino, Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills.

The original is in Santa Barbara and I ate quite a few as a student at UCSB.

In-N-Out egdes Tommy's for overall best tasting burger but nothing beats a good ol greasy chili cheesburger w/ chili fries from Tommy's after a late night of partying in Hollywood. The best thing to stave off a hangover.

Manny Legace just got put on waivers by St Louis. Reports are that the Kings and Ottawa might show interest.

I gotta believe at this point we would be crazy to pick Legace up. Quick and Ersberg are doing just fine and gaining valuable experience. Ottawa should be the ones jumping on this guy.

Sorry to be off topic, but wanted to mention it and didn't see it up.

This is no contest. The 41 people who voted for Tommy's so far are wrong. :D

Matter of fact, I think I'm gonna head out and get some In N Out right now.

I did the "ski all day / attend Kings game at night" once and it was tougher than it sounds. It probably didn't help that the Kings played one of their most boring games ever, a shutout loss to the Caps (I believe) back in the monstrously dull Larry Robinson era.

I much prefer In-N-Out to Tommy's, but I refuse to vote since The Munch Box in Chatsworth isn't on the list.

"Reports are" -- ha ha. The Kings aren't looking for a goalie.

The best hamburger in the world, by the way, is to be had at Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The bun is about the size of a toddler's head. My personal favorite is the quint Blimpy with fried egg, bacon and swiss. Yes, quint is five patties, although they're not stacked. It's more of a pile.

You forgot to mention the rides. A 3.5 to 4.5 on the richter scale is an absolute must for any out-of-towners.

Don't forget the shack burger 1/3 lb with a split Louisiana Hot Link. The one in Santa Monica at 23rd and Wilshire is better than the one in Culver. Also - Johnny's in Culver has much better Pastrami than The Hat.

Yeah..'Reports are' definitely is DoubleSpeak for 'Rumors Are'.

Back on topic now

I've done the 1/2 day ocean fishing boat out of Dana Point, Afternoon roller hockey game, night Kings gamewatch and gamblefest at the indian casino. Too old for that now though. Caught a bass, checked some a$$ and out I passed.

Habit is decent. I'm with Quisp on Apple Pan. The hickory burger is pretty awesome there and the apple pie is pretty darn tasty. ... now i'm getting hungry.

We have Quickie, Ersberg and Bernier. Now that Lababs is gone the goalie sitch is not a big issue. I think pretty soon the Kings will have the opposite problem: Which goalie to keep.

The Sens can have Legace.

Father's Office is too snooty. They're like the soup nazi of cheese burgers.

Sorry, Isaac. In-N-Out isn't a franchise. The family owns each and every one. Hence, their ability to make sure that the quality stays consistently high.

Where else in LA are you going to get a chiliburger at 2am after a hockey game?

Tommy's... ..Period.

jet said:

For mass, there is no eaqual to the qradruple bypass burger in Phoenix.
For complex taste, I agree with JgSmall, the best is the shack burger.
In n out is great for a simple burger.
Nothing beats a Tommy's after midnight.

So the fan hat trick is to wake up by Noon, have a double double animal style, go to Shack burger for a pregame shack burger, go to the game, and hit tommy's for the triple triple extra everything and chilichesse fries on the way home. Anyone sell life insurance out there?

I EAT ANYTHING> I MEAN ANYTHING. but i remember to the first day i ate a tommys burger like it was my last... oh wait..it was my last

THH- what afterparty do you go to where you are at a hockey game until 2am?

I tend to like homemade burgers with all my own seasonings and Worcestershire sauce with pepperjack and grilled onions. But I love the animal style fries at In N Out.

The Counter.

In-n-Out and Tommy's are overrated. Even Fatburger is superior.

Kings Fan in Nashville said:

When in Nashville, the best burger is in a dive called Brown's Diner, only about 15 mins from where the Predators play.

And the best fried chicken/southern soul you'll ever have in your life will be at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. Only for the courageous as the hot chicken is no hyberbole, and the restaurant is as grungy as your worst nightmares.

only have been to Apple Pan once, randomly. and being a group of hungry college students faced with an unknown long wait time, we ended up missing out. it's close enough to UCLA that i could go, so i'll work on that.

In 'n Out.

Isaac said:

Historyguy, you are right. My bad. I meant chains. Might as well put the McRib on the list.

How can we have a discussion about burgers and not mention Carneys, the train? Beats Tommys any day. Shame on all of you for forgetting the train!

However, Apple Pan is superior to all. Though I have to admit the Habit aint too shabby.

In N Out is good, but not even on the top 5 of best burgers in L.A.

I love the LA "hat trick". I have skied Wrighwood and surfed Santa Monica the same day, pretty cool really. Getting in a Kings game the same day??? That would be interesting, gotta try it....
