Showing some fight

The question comes up, from time to time, about how to judge progress with a young team. Here's one way: does it look like the players are a team, or a collection of individuals? Terry Murray was asked today about that cohesiveness, following Saturday's game in which several skirmishes took place in the first period...

-----

Question: What would be an indication that guys are really playing for each other? It seems like since the road trip, there is an intangible there, but from behind the bench, what are your thoughts on seeing guys play for each other?

MURRAY: ``To me, there's a lot of different areas that I would look it. The play without the puck is an area that we've been talking about, right from the first day. That's what I look at immediately, how we're doing on the checking side of the game. Are we working hard for each other in that area? In any kind of situation that demands support, such as net scrums, if teammates are getting in there right away, it shows a great deal of care for each other and battle for each other. I think the indication for me, last night, was with the several scrums that happened in the first period and with Greener jumping in at the end with Moreau. That's good stuff. But you're right in saying that there are intangibles. It's hard to define it. It's just that feel, that sense that you walk into the locker room and you can feel it. Same thing during the games. Your intensity level, your passion is out there. You're laying down to block shots and you're doing all the little things that there are no stats for. We're seeing a lot of that stuff from this hockey club. Guys care.''

This atmosphere of playing for each other is a giant step forward for this organization. You could see it in the expression of the players both on the bench and on the ice. This attitude alone can create a winning atmosphere in the locker room and we are beginning to see that. DL and TM both understand this tangible part of the game and want to develop and encourage this kind of atmosphere for the organization. I enjoy watching this team play wether they win or lose. Because the players show that they actually care.

Rich, with your ability to find information about the prospects in the organization either from DL or other sources. Can you find out why Boyle playing in Manchester is playing on a line with Westgreth and Clune on their fourth line. Does this mean that the kings are no longer interested in Boyle's development or they are trying to toughen him up and get him ready to play in the NHL? This is very interesting development, which I think most of us fans would be interested in knowing why this is so.

Thank you
Roger

Questions for Dean Lombardi:

I've heard you have been chosen to be a part of the USA Olympic team. That's pretty cool and a great honor. What are you doing for them?

Also...when is the next Breakfast with the GM? My family and I love going and are looking forward to the next one?

i think this team is building chemistry. i agree with tm, its hard to define, but you know it when you see it. yesterday's game for example. down 0-2, and the boys stood up and fought (literally) back into the game. when we tied it up with 25 seconds left, did you see the kings bench? they looked like they won the cup. i agree with roger. this team cares - about their play and each other.

linda... i had the same problem last night. it was so bad i had to leave this site.

penguins fired their coach today. ouch. cup final last season, unemployment line 8 months later. ouch!

atlanta laid it to the ducks today. nice to see that. hopefully they ran out of goals for the rest of their socal trip.

happy presidents day.

I like TM's comments and yes, you can see the difference in this teams chemistry. It is a true joy to watch them as said, whether they win or lose.

I do have a pop-up blocker and had the same problem here yesterday. The ad blocked out the posts and threads. Couldn't get rid of it, no matter how I tried. It was very annoying.

I'm not a big fan of TM, but speaking of showing some fight...

it made me smile to see Murray kinda jump for joy and cheer along with the players when Dustin Brown scored against the Oilers. It was nice to actually see some caring come out of him.

I saw something over the past 2 games that I don't think I have ever seen before.

Emotion, and I mean REAL emotion from Handzus. Not saying he hasn't shown it before, but man, against Edmonton, he gave a huge F yeah when Doughty netted that PP goal and charged right at him to celebrate, and when Brown tipped in the Frolov shot, he went ape****.

I'm seeing something out of this Kings team that I don't know if I've seen in about 15 years. Real emotion, and guys playing for eachother. I've been saying, it's coming...it's coming. I think it may be here! When Brown scored that goal, I know those at the game maybe didn't see it, but watching at home on TV, the bench was going NUTS! I thought Murray was going to have a heart attack...first time I've seen emotion from him as well, and I mean real elation. Quick just about did a back flip.

I also noticed the emotion on the bench after we tied it up on Saturday. It was great to see the reaction from TM and Quick.
That's something that has been missing from this organization for a looong time.

I don't know whether TM will be here when we become serious cup contenders, but we all owe him a debt of gratitude for preparing this team to go to the next level.
He changed the culture of the team in a very short period of time.
People can bash him for certain in-game decisions that he's made, but looking at the larger picture, what he's done is truly amazing.

It was great to see Greene sticking up for his teammates on Saturday. I would assume that the lesson from a couple of months ago has been learned.

I also think credit must go out to Brown for the job he's doing as captain. You don't hear any whining or complaining coming out of the Kings locker room.
He's learning to be a leader on the fly and from what we've all seen, he's doing a terrific job.

Excellent point regarding Brown NYK...I don't think anyone here knows just how hard it is to be a captain, a young one at that, in the NHL, and still produce (and boy, is he producing right now).

The guys on this team are amazing. I went to the practice yesterday. After, as they came out, they all signed autographs & were friendly as they usually are. There was also a hockey fundraiser going on in the parking lot with some youth team selling hamburgers & hot dogs.

So what do the guys do? After signing all the autographs they went & got some food. Simmonds said he wanted a burger & when Doughty came out they went & got one. Then Quincy came out & then Greene. They all sat down outside the Toyotoa Sports Center with the fans & ate their food. What a fun picture taking time that was. After they ate & left, Stoll comes out. He get his burger & sits down too. They all chatted with the fans brave enough to speak with them & even signed autographs while they waited for their food.

Also Ivanans took some time & was talking to a young hockey player off to the side for about 20 minutes. Maybe he knew him I don't know. But the way these guys looked & acted around each other & the fans was very cool & left a great impression with everybody.

They were hanging out with each other after practice & were very friendly to all the fans. I wish our baseball teams could do the same.

In past seasons it's true that the Kings were a collection of individuals. There is an upside and downside when you bring in so many free agent mercenaries like DL did a season ago (Nagy, Stuart, et al). He had to because the kids weren't ready and the farm club wasn't stocked yet with enough prospects. DL's goal was probably to remain competitive (and keep the Staples' seats filled) while he rebuilt on the fly. And hope a goalie - ANY goalie - could stop the puck while staying healthy.

But by completely rebuilding starting this summer, things changed. We have the youngest team in the NHL. When you can create a home grown approach from a true start where young players play, learn and bond together, then - if the chemistry is right - you grow a TEAM that will fight for each other. (And not worry about their stats.) Pretty special. Looks like that might be happening now.

The other upside is that virtually all of the core players are signed. DL only needs to concentrate on JMFJ, and possibly Frolov. The rest are safe in the cupboard for awhile. O'Donnell, Army, Preissing, Calder and a few others? That'll sort itself out in due time.
