Brown baby update
Stepping away from trade talk for a minute, I know a lot of you are interested in Dustin Brown and how his family is doing. As you probably know, Dustin Brown's wife, Nicole, delivered the couple's second child on Feb. 23. I'll assume, from some of the comments that were posted here and elsewhere, that some people weren't aware of the details. They weren't reported, out of respect for Brown and his family's privacy. Now, after talking with Brown and the Kings, it's clear that everyone is OK with sharing the details.
Brown's son, Mason Cole, was born at 31 weeks, four days, which was just more than eight weeks premature. He weighed 4 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 16.5 inches long. Mason remains in the hospital, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where he will remain for the next several weeks. The hope is that, in the next few days, Mason will have his IV removed and be moved from an incubator to an open crib, although there are problems with his body-temperature regulation at the moment. The baby is on a feeding tube, but the hope is that bottle-feeding can start in the next week or two. Mason is gaining weight, which is a good sign, and yesterday he got back up to his birth weight.
I'll do my best to keep everyone updated, and I'm sure Dustin and Nicole appreciate your well wishes.

please express to the whole brown family our best wishes and prayers on mason's speedy recovery...
hockey players are people,too...
dustin has a lot more important things than hockey on his mind...
sincere best wishes for lil' mason's health and outlook...!!!!!!
And to think everybody on here was bashing him for having the child in the middle of the NHL season...
Best wishes to the family, and to the child.
That's unfortunate, but it sounds like the baby will be OK. I can certainly understand all of this eating away at the back of Dustin's mind. Many had said they planned the baby for April, didn't really click though that it was this premature.
I hope Mason is healthy and out of the hospital as soon as possible, and that Dustin and Nicole can enjoy their newborn in their home without cause for concern.
I also hope some you out there in the blogosphere are ashamed of yourselfs. Tisk tisk.
Thanks for filling in the blanks Rich. I'll cheer extra hard for Papa Brown at tonights game.
This totally explains why a different Dustin Brown arrived in Detroit, he just wasn't his usual hard-hitting self upon his return. I'm saying a prayer for the Browns and especially little Mason.
woops, the anonymous post above is from me.
To Dustin and Nichole, Best wishes to you and Mason. I am the grandfather of a one year old boy who was born at 24 weeks and altho it has been a struggle the blessings far outweigh everything else. Little Zachary is doing well and I look forward to sharing many fun times with him. God Bless you all.
Wow. All the people who were spouting the "Not Captain Material" garbage should really be feeling like A-holes right about now.
I guess the little fella couldn't wait to take a shift! ;) Sincerely hope it all works out for them and that he's fully healthy soon..
I have no doubt that Mason shall overcome this and grow to become a fearsome hard-hitting power forward like his father. YOU GO, MASON.
All the best wishes, we love you Dustin..
You were the definite best choice for the captain..
So remember all you knee jerk people out there that as in life or hockey trades it is not always as it seems on the surface.
DB take all the time you need to get Mason where he needs to be and do not miss out on 1 second of his life. I have personal experience with this and your son is most important. Get him ok and you will be too.
He will get there and be OK. He is cut from good cloth.
Hey Eat,
If it was a 6th rounder then DL got fleeced again! It should be at least a 2nd round pick, cuz the kid's a proven battler-plays hard, tough, never gives up.
Rich, Thanks for the update.I'm happy to hear that Dustin and his family are doing well under the circumstances. Family needs to come first right now and certainly should. Here's wishing all the best to the Brown family. Wishing Mason a speedy recovery and hoping he is able to go home soon. Brian M
Oh my gosh.
I hadn't read Rich's article and didn't know the situation.
What a heel I feel like.
I send my prayers out to Dustin and Nicole.
My child was in NICU for about a month (not for being premature) after she was born and we saw many many premature babies in the NICU. Some born significantly earlier then little Mason.
And it was absolutely AMAZING what modern medicine is able to do for premature babies. By the time we left even the ones who looked the worse off were thriving over that time period.
All the best to the Brown family and to little Mason.
I hope some of those negative posters that were giving Brown a hard time learned a lesson here in humanity.
No worries Brown family, I was born 4 pounds 7ounces and I'm now 6' 3", 215 pounds. All things work out. My best wishes are with you all.
My son was born 1 pound 10 oz... He was born about 15 weeks early and was in the NICU for 95 days... He is not only healthy as can be... he is a huge kings and Dustin Brown fan... Good Luck to Dustin and his family...
One other thing...my baby was on a feeding tube for 3 weeks and still took to nursing right away after it was removed, without a problem. I'm sure that's weighing heavily on the minds of the Brown family but from my experience, it'll happen for them.
Good luck to the Browns...
not in the least.
"I guess the little fella couldn't wait to take a shift!"
LOL. stay strong and grow lil mason. there's no "quit" in those genes.
Ok...I don't think anyone has a right to question Brown's committment to the team any longer. Family is SOOOOOO much more important then any career, regardless of how important or lucrative it may be.
Thank you Dustin for being a good father and husband above being a hockey player. I wish Mason and Nicole the best.
Anyone who has had a kid knows that they tend to lose some weight right after they are born. So for this little guy to have already gotten back to his birth weight is a really good sign.
We're thinking good thoughts for you and your family Dustin! Mason sounds like he's going to be fine, but I'm sure very scary for new parents.
Whoa, I gotta say, the fact that Brown came back to the team despite all of this PROVES what a leader he is. DB deserves that C BIG TIME.
Dustin,
My wife and I offer you our congratulations on the birth of your child and our sincerest hopes that he continues to improve. If he's anything like his old man, he'll be running around knocking people flat in no time!
Go Mason!
Go Kings!
Being a father of a premie myself I know how tough it is. W/ that being said, modern medecine is a wonderful thing. Im sure he'll pull thru just as my daughter did. The toughest part was not having your child home.
Good luck Mason!
Mason is gonna grow up to be a BEAST! The preemies always seem to grow up big and strong. I'll be saying my prayers for the Brown family and especially little Mason. Hang in there, it'll only get better.
We Kings fans all support you Dustin (and family), not because you play for the Kings, but because of the type of stand-up person you are. You represent your team and your family VERY well.
Continued thoughts and prayers will be sent your way as we all wish Mason much prosperity as he continues to get stronger day by day. Family is always first!
Dustin's had a lot on his mind. Best wishes to the Browns.
I was born at 5 and a half months and was 2 pounds and eleven ounces. I completely fine and big and strong. A little chubby. I think everything will turn out alright.
Best wishes to the Brown family. Kinda makes hockey seem unimportant. But I'm sure Mason will turn out great!
Warm wishes and thoughts to little mason and his family. My daughter was born prematurely as well and it was hard not to be able to bring her home for the first few days. I am sure Mason will do well and grow up to be just as big and strong as his daddy.
hope everything turns out well for the Browns. Having a child in the hospital I'm sure is no easy thing. Hopefully little Mason will plump up soon and get out of the neonatal unit and back home where he belongs.
Thoughts and prayers go out to Nicole and Dustin, I hope the best for them and Mason Cole.
Thanks for reporting this Rich. Please forward everyone's thoughts and prayers to the Brown family.
My daughter was also born at 31 weeks. The problem with premature babies is their premature and just need the time for their body functions to turn on (temp regulation, feeding action, etc. Give him time he will come around.
I know how this goes. My little sister was only 22 weeks when she was born. It was difficult and stressful, but she made it through.
Here's hoping little Mason does the same and maybe one day follows in Dad's footsteps playing for the Kings.
All my prayers and well wishes with the family.
That must of been insanely tough for Dustin to have to leave Mason and catch up with the Kings last week. Poor guy!
Prayers go out to the Browns and the little Mason!!
I was one who commented so angrily against those who were bashing Dustin during this difficult time. Because we knew of the situation from a personal relationship with Dustin and Nicole, reading some of the remarks set me off. For that I appologize because some of the things I said were not nice. I just want to say that Brownie's love for LA is unwavering and I felt some of you were wrong in questioning his loyalty to the Kings. Family comes first especially when a child is involved. I know most people did not know of the situation at the time, but to doubt Dustin's leadership should never have come into play. I know the entire Brown family appreciates your thoughts and prayers and so do I. Thank you all.
my sister was born 3 months early and weighed in around 1.2 pounds and is absolutely fine now and I hope the best for dustin's new baby..
Just the fact that Brown returned to the team as soon as he did, speaks volumes for his loyalty to his teammates.
He's continuing to play now, in spite of the personal concerns over his baby in the hospital, should earn much respect from fans.
He'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
Bob Miller mentioned the baby's weight when he first announced the birth on the TV telecast, and my Mom immediately picked up on it and was concerned. Hope little Mason is doing better.
To Dustin and Nicole, my most sincere thoughts for Mason's speedy arrival at 100% health and stability. We Kings fans couldn't be happier to have such a player as yourself Dustin who "cares" so much about the team and bringing 100% every night.
