No O'Sullivan on ice

Patrick O'Sullivan is not on the ice. It appears to be a trade and a flip involving Edmonton and Carolina. I'm at the rink and news is trickling in.

EncinoMan,

Me too, I'm quite unsure as to what Justin Williams provides that Patty O doesn't, besides age and a broken hand.

Dominic Lavoie Author Profile Page said:

Justin Williams is a proven NHL player who is still young and has a Philly connection. He has a hand injury and I have no idea when he will be back in the lineup. He is signed for I think 3 more years. His salary this year is $3.5 million.

He has been a 30 goal scorer a couple times and has scored 70+ points in the league. He has won a cup in Carolina. He has had an ACL injury and other injuries.

O'Sullivan is a little shocking, especially considering its a flip and he goes to Edmonton. If he figures things out and does well there than this is not going to look like a good deal. Sully probably plays with Hemsky and Horcoff now...

This is a garbage move by DL. What the hell? A broken handed achilles tendon aching sorry excuse for another washed up player for one of our more talented up and coming players? Are you kidding me?

It seems like whenever the Kings have trouble signing a player via holdout of arbitration, ala Cammalleri and now O'Sullivan, they are automatically gonna be traded the following year.

Stupid stupid stupid. Let's now hope Jack signs asap so this doesn't happen next year too.

JDM Author Profile Page said:

Well, I wanted Sully traded. I had hoped we'd get a little more than Williams, but I think I'm OK with this move.

Williams injuries worry me, but the guy has won a cup, and that means a fair bit I think. He can fit in this team for the future.

He's got a nice shot, so we kind of have a sniper now? I hope he's not THE solution. Removing Sully still leaves a hole in the top 6.

Interesting though. I'm curious to know how Kopitar and Brown feel about this.

I had wanted to see Sully develop tho, even if he underachieved big time this year.

I'm mixed and torn, so I'll go with DL's judgement that Williams will bring more of something we are missing than losing Sully removes something we had.

I was shocked when I read this on thefourthperiod.com, but not surprised. After all the headache that was caused trying to get O'Sullivan into camp back in September/October, it didn't seem like he'd be moved. But I can't say I'm disappointed about this trade.

When I first found out that the trade involved Carolina on tsn.ca/tradecentre, I was like "Alright, this is an even move". When I saw later that O'Sullivan had moved to the Oilers, I was a bit surprised, and it makes me think that maybe when we traded Lubo for Greene and Stoll that the Oilers wanted O'Sullivan also, but of course it wasn't the right time.

Interesting the Oilers give up Eric Cole to Carolina, because if you remember, there was a trade in the offseason between the Oilers and Hurricanes, where Cole went to Carolina for Joni Pitkanen.

So basically, it all pans out like this:
Kings get: F Stoll, D Greene, F Williams
Oilers get: F O'Sullivan, D Visnovsky (out for season)
Hurricanes get: D Pitkanen

To me, it definitely looks like the Kings got the better end of the exchanges between these teams.

I think Carolina gets hosed, although Cole had success there. Edmonton wins this deal, assuming its just the 3 players and no picks or prospects involved. I have to imagine that there are picks involved though. Hopefully we got some picks...

Though just as I write this it pops up on the ticker on NHL Network and it says we sent Sully AND a 2nd to the Canes, who flipped Sully for Cole.

I like it a little less now.

I have to imagine that DL was targeting Williams. He couldn't have just wanted to dump Sully. He could have waited until the draft to do that.

hmm...

As much as i loved Patty O....Williams is a winner...and going forward, when this team is ready to contend he will be a huge part of this team...he has a good salary and term...he is still young, and much like the Stoll trade, we won't see the full benifit of having Williams in the lineup until we make the playoffs....Lombardi is a shrewd G.M., who understands how much a winning attitude and expeirience is huge for the development of guys like Kopitar, brown, Doughty, etc.....Williams can also help with some locker room leadership, much like Stoll and Handzus have this year....I like the trade..even if Williams doesn't play a single game this year...also it gives us a chance to try Moller and/or Purcell in the top six for the rest of the year to see how they will fit going forward...

It has become pretty obvious that POS is seriously lacking the strength required to win battles along the boards. I have watched him very closely since he came to LA and he has never exhibited the ability to battle and win battles. He is unquestionably talented and will probably thrive along side Hemsky. But Williams provides the goal scoring ability of POS along with some experience and more of a "battle factor". He has 3 more years at 3.5 so we get some terms there. I dont like the fact however that we sent a second round pick to Carolina as well. I thought POS for an injured Williams straight up was a fair deal. But whats done is done and this will be a good trade for the Kings as long as Williams can stay healthy. And it seems that the injury jinx is a thing of the past for the Kings *crosses fingers*

Alright, confusion building...

per thefourthperiod.com

"In a four-team trade to close out the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Kings traded center Patrick O'Sullivan to the Carolina Hurricanes for right wing Justin Williams.
The Hurricanes then dealt Williams and a second-round draft pick to the Edmonton Oilers for left wing Erik Cole.

The Oilers then moved that second-round draft choice to the Buffalo Sabres for Ales Kotalik."

That sounds like we didn't give up a pick. Kind of in stark contrast to the NHL Networks ticker.

Captain Material Author Profile Page said:

Don't fully understand this one. And we give up a 2nd rounder? Williams is older. Looking at his past two years shows he's been injured and hasn't played much or terribly effectively (he also is coming off an achilles tendon injury, and oh yeah, also some back injury history).

If you look at the last two years on just a point per game basis, POS is 51 ppg and Williams is 48 ppg, so not much difference there. Both guys have two years left on their contracts, but Sully made less and becomes an RFA instead of a UFA.

I suppose DL likes this guy, but I don't yet see how this is a good deal for us. Looking forward to the explaination on this one...

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

Re the pick(s) involved --

I smell another pick in this deal. DL sends a second (Rich -- can you confirm which 2nd, the Kings or Calgary? I'm guessing CGY), I'm wondering if he's getting one back. I would be surprised if he didn't.

The other thing I'll say about this: in addition to it being an interesting "retaliation" for the now-quoted-in-the-press to be "contentious" contract negotiations, I think it's also a shot across the bow of Kopitar and Brown.

Obviously, those two players are untouchable. Kopitar, Brown and POS are famously known to be good friends, and expected to play together this season. For various reasons, that didn't work out. Significantly, those three guys (in my opinion) did not do their jobs over the last two weeks. I think this is DL calling them on it. This was the time to step up. Two weeks ago, DL had a reason to believe that his team might be in the playoffs this season, which -- no matter what anyone might say about "the plan" -- would have been a huge career boost for Lombardi.

My point really is this: Kopitar and Brown bear some of the blame for POS getting dealt. POS was in a vulnerable position, trade-wise, so he was the one to move. But it's a message to his former linemates.

Interesting take on this. I was thinking it was a shot across Fro's (and his agent's) bow re: next contract negotiation. But you make a good point. Can I offer another dynamic re: this trade-- from the front office's perspective, friendships only take a player so far, and if a player isn't producing, it does not matter if your best friends are two of the franchise's cornerstones, you are expendable. It sounds cold, but it is an attitude the GM has to take or risk losing the franchise to personalities. Anyway, that's my two cents (which is what's left in my 401k these days...)

jet said:

POS just did not seem to fit any where. Nothing against him, it was not a fit. I am more worried about the value we recieved. Williams appears to be a DL type player, but health is a big concern.

Justin Williams is a no-BS player. He was anxious to get back in after his Sept 08 achilles injury, may have come back a bit too soon because it took him time to work back into his old form, but he did work his butt off over the fall to get back ASAP after his achilles injury. He was just starting to round into form in February when he got the broken hand, which could happen to anybody. He should be back in the lineup about 10 days - 2 weeks.

Look, Justin Williams goes to the net, HARD, fearless, something O'Sullivan will never do. JW can definitely put the biscuit in the basket. He is a team guy, 2-way hockey player, great at digging out pucks in board battles, strong on both special teams and doesn't shy away from calling out his team if they are not bringing it on the ice. Those who were calling for Ryan Smyth should be happier we got essentially a younger version of a player along Smyth's lines.

But honestly, what does this guy have that POS doesn't? I think DL started to dislike him ever since he held out at the starting of the year, and after holding out, he didn't produce much this year.. It was just an off-year for POS and he gets dealt, ugh..

Anonymous said:

Well I think the important thing to remember is that we are getting home grown talent & using it to "build a team"...

Assuming the Kings sign a big FA in the summer of 09 or 10, the Kings are starting to fill out a roster that has speed, size, scoring, grit & heart....

I'm just saying here, but the team could look something like....

Frolov - Kopitar - High End UFA Kovy/Gabs?
Wiliams - Center - Brown
Moller/Purcell - Stoll - Simmonds

You bascially trading O'Sullivan for Williams which I think the Kings lose on abit due to age & potential, however you add experience to your roster & depth, you add a guy that has played in a lot of MEANINGFUL games in Williams. You open up the purse strings for that UFA and people that may look at LA as a team to play on will look to see what type of leadership is there, who's in that room they know is proven, etc. Williams may not have been the idle guy in a trade but he does bring leadership traits, esp after winning a stanley cup.

Boils down to a couple thing in my opinion...holdout, not coming out on fire with the new contract, bad attitude and just maybe was a locker room problem. Ask Brownie about his days with Sean Avery. Could definately be the case. That stuff flies around the league and sends his value severely downward...again ask Avery & the Rangers the only team to take that chance for a seenmingly talented guy. I do wish we got more BUT this does open the door for the guys you all have been begging for to come up. Bottom line is it does send a message that FINALLY in LA right or wrong the inmates are NOT running the asylum. He was given a very fair first offer and should have been appreciative. How many pucks did he dig out, how many times did he peel back and pass rather than go to the net, how many times did he not back check. The list goes on. I don't have any info on this Williams kid yet, but I don't see that it can be any worse than what we had/didn't have from Patrick. Best of luck, but imho, good riddance.
