Postgame notes (4/4)

Justin Williams (1-2=3) had his first goal as a King tonight. His career high for point in one game is four (last time was Oct. 16, 2006).

Williams played in his 499th career NHL game tonight.

Anze Kopitar (1-2=3) had his sixth three-point game of the season (19th of career).

Alexander Frolov (2g) has scored 30 goals for the second time in his career. He needs four more to pass Ziggy Palffy for fourth all-time among Kings right-wingers.

Brian Boyle (2g) had his first career two-goal game and second career multi-point game (his first came in his NHL debut Feb. 2, 2008 at New Jersey).

The six goals tied a season high for the Kings (fifth time this season they’ve scored six goals).

The Kings have killed off 21 straight penalties against Phoenix, including four tonight.

Teams combined for 38 penalties in the third period tonight.

What is it about Boyle that makes me root for him? He’s a 6′ 7 underdog. Amazing what happens when he’s not stuck on the 4th line (good luck Oscar). He’s played hard and earned his goals. I like that he takes the puck to the net. Playing with Purcell is a good match as BB needs to be with someone with footspeed.

I don’t see how Drewiske doesn’t make the team next year. More and more ice-time in all situations. Active on offense, makes good outlet passes, hasn’t looked lost yet. Doughty, Johnson, Green, O’D, Quincey, Drewiski, and Rookie. Harrold’s in trouble.

Listening to Jim Fox over the year reveals a contradiction that this team needs to resolve. On the one hand he often talks about “staying with the system”, a system which is very conservative, shell-like, defense first. And that has brought our GA down, no doubt about it. But it has also contributed to our GF declining.

Now listen to him tonight talking about how effective the Kings are when they attack with 5 men. But this is NOT what the Kings normally do. And we score 6 goals. This won’t happen all the time and Phoenix was bad, but there’s no way we “take the next step” being so conservative.

I’m not in love with this guy (not even a man-crush), but I think Drewiske really helps here. Fox repeatedly calls him a “stay at home D-man” but it stikes me how often he jumps in on offense, something most of our guys do not do, either because of “system” requirements or because it’s just not what they do. The problem for me is that TM wants his defenders to be ultra-conservative, especially young d-men. I would hope that we get an active, offensive-defenseman paired up with a true stay at home partner.
