All of the finalists for the major NHL awards have been announced. For those who haven’t seen all of the results, here are the finalists plus, in the interest of disclosure, how I voted as a member of the Professional Hockey Writers Association:

I voted: 1) Ovechkin, 2) Datsyuk, 3) Sidney Crosby

Calder Trophy (outstanding rookie):
Steve Mason, Columbus Blue Jackets
Bobby Ryan, Anaheim Ducks
Kris Versteeg, Chicago Blackhawks
I voted: 1) Mason, 2) Drew Doughty, 3) Ryan

Mike Richards, Philadelphia Flyers
I voted: 1) Datsyuk, 2) David Krejci, 3) Patrick Marleau

Wow Rich…Iginla for the Lady Byng? Not exactly the most “gentlemanly” player in the league.

  • ice is nice

I like the Iginla write in because Jarome honors the game, but I see where lady bing and PIM do not equate.

  • TB

mbrett7…Disagree, Iginla competes hard, but he is a model citizen in regards to sportsmanship and most importantly respect for the game.

Rich…I’m surprised with your Hart picks not even mentioning Malkin. Granted, Ovechkin is such a huge part of his team’s success, and Crosby is obviously worthy of being mentioned, but not even honorable mention for the league leader in points???

  • josh e.

    I would vote
    Hart-Datsuk
    Calder-Mason
    Norris-Green
    Lady Bing-Parise
    Vezina-Thomas
    Selke-Zetterberg

  • mrbrett7

TB…I love Iginla, and especially the way he plays the game, but as a Lady Byng finalist, can’t say I agree.

If that’s the case, so is Ryan Getzlaf. They play the game the same way. You can add Shane Doan to that list.

The Lady Byng doesn’t need to equate soft players, but guys who go out and fight probably shouldn’t be on the list. I know the guys I listed aren’t exactly goons, but they will drop the mits when need be.

I don’t really agree with Datsyuk either…if you really watch him play, he isn’t exactly “clean”. He’s a hell of a player, but he does take quite a few liberties out there (why not, if you can get away with it).

When I think lady Byng, I think of guys like Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman and the like.

  • Sean Avery

Why wasnt I nominated for Lady Byng? I am a fashionista.

  • Bring Back the Shield Jersey

When are the coach-of-the-year finalists announced? Did you, Rich, vote on that one? And what are the rules re being able to vote for goalies, i.e., why didn’t you have a vote?

  • X

The GMs of the NHL vote for Vezina.

  • variable

it goes to show everybody how dynamic and an incredibly talent player datsyuk really is…to be considered for most of the awards he’s eligible for on a yearly basis speaks volumes…

i, too, would’ve put malkin ahead of crosby…

the iginla vote is interesting…but i like how rich is saying that it’s okay to fight with a purpose in mind and that you can still play the game with the same vigor while coupling sportsmanship at the same time…

and i agree w/rich on the selke nomination of david krejci…when rich asked us previously to choose our finalist/winners, i had that exact same 1 and 2…

i know it wasn’t posted by rich, but:

for the adams – my vote would’ve been for andy murray

for the masterson – it has to be richard zednik…with honorable mentions to steve sullivan and our czech god, zus…

    AK,
JJ is on a tear against Sweden, and we’ve doubled their shot total. Looks like we’ll pull thi one out, despite Esche

  • variable

    it’s 5-5 heading into OT…

    jj has 1 and 2
    sully has 1 and 1

  • variable

dick tarnstrom just ended it 1:59 into OT…6-5 sweden…

  • darko25o

ESCHE LOSES IT FOR US AGAIN! ! !
Does America really not have any other goalie to represent us? Every year our chances are blown by poor goal keeping. Wheres Miller? We were up by 3 goals with 12 minutes to play…and by 2 goals with 8. We almost doubled Sweden’s shot total…..I’m so pissed!
How is American hockey supposed to gain any respect with loses like this?

  • khanon81

    Rich,

Why do you have a man crush for Pavel Datsyuk?

You put Frolov on the Wings and he would do just as good if not better than Datsyuk. The same is true of the opposite: put Datsyuk on the Kings and he’ll do just as good as Frolov. Its just the way it is.

DL: Bring Rick Nash to LA (of course, make sure you can sign him first)!

  • khanon81

Why isn’t J-Quick playing for US???

  • Paul from Oxnard

Khanon81: Put down whatever you’re smoking. Datsyuk is 10x the player Frolov is at the defensive end of the ice, and he’s probably better offensively. He’s the best player in the Western Conference and I’d say Ovechkin is the only player in the NHL better the Datsyuk.

As for why Quick isn’t playing for Team USA, why would he? He’s played in 44 NHL games. There are better qualified goalies out there then Quick.

  • Eric K

    Jon Quick >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Robert Esche

  • Pumpernicholl

khanon81 are you freaking pulling our leg?

“You put Frolov on the Wings and he would do just as good if not better than Datsyuk.”

Whatever loco-powder you are smoking, I can assure you, has transported you to a planet all your own

  • khanon81

    Pumpernicholl,

    I don’t smoke.

  • Pumpernicholl

You also don’t have any evidence that Frolov is as good as Datsyuk because you can produce none. Anyone with a working set of eyes can see the profound difference.

I’m sorry, I’m a Frolov fan, but holy cow! If trading Frolov brought the Kings Datsyuk, I’d give Alex a free limo ride to the airport and a free farewell case of Dom Perignon. I’d roll out the red carpet for him to walk to the plane on and I would say “God bless you Alex, but we are getting Magic on Skates in return.”

Datsyuk’s hands, vision and hockey sense are Hall of Fame all the way. I can’t believe his pwnage of this league is not visible to you. The Wings would not be at the top of the NHL year after year without Datsyuk. Frolov is a unique player no doubt, be he does not have the quantum effect on his team of a Datsyuk.

  • khanon81

    Pumpernicholl,

I’m not a fan of Frolov whatsoever… In fact, I hope DL trades him out of here asap.

The point i was making was that if Frolov played for the Wings, he would give close to a 100% each night, not to mention the talented players he would play with there, along with the system. Frolov scores 30 goals here while giving 50% effort most nights. In a red wings jersey, i could see him netting 40-45 goals just like Datsyk and those other figure skaters with sticks on that team.

    Do you agree?

  • Pumpernicholl

I don’t agree because the more you write, the less you make sense. Your “percentages” are specious, for one thing. How do you know Frolov only plays 50% and would automatically play 100% on the Wings? Ridiculous.

Also If you’re saying Frolov is just as good as Datsyuk, how can you NOT be a fan of Frolov?

I mean, I just don’t know where you’re coming from.

Datsyuk is arguably the most complete player (in the sense of a 2-way player) in the NHL. You might notice that he is also a Selke finalist, that is not an accident either. Also, when was the last time a Selke finalist was also a Lady Byng finalist? Datsyuk is in a class of his own.

  • variable

i implore all the frolov haters to go back and read my post under his evaluation in last months archives…

frolov is ridiculously underrated…and i…among others in that thread…present very compelling arguments on his behalf on why he should be presented with a decent contract extension…

and the player that he’s being compared to on this thread (datsyuk) has already called fro “one of the most underrated players in the league”…

    respect the fro…!
