As a member of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, I'm called upon to vote for some of the trophies The trophies listed below are the ones that I will vote for. Anyone care to offer their thoughts/votes? As part of my voting, I have to select a top five for each trophy.

-----

HART TROPHY ("to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team")

NORRIS TROPHY ("to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position")

CALDER TROPHY ("to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition")
(Note: An eligible player cannot have played more than 25 NHL games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons. A player must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept. 15 of the season in which he is eligible.)

LADY BYNG TROPHY ("to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability")

SELKE TROPHY ("to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game")

Calder - Drew Doughty (biggest no brainer)
Byng - Kirk Maltby
Selke - Sammy Pahlson

BTW, Colorado just fired their GM. Hopefully that'll start a trend.

Hart - Datsyuk (he sticks out on this very talented team...)

Norris - Chara (Green could get the vote, simply on the rarity of Dmen scoring 30+ goals, but Chara has the all-round game. Lidstrom is great too, of course but he didn't dominate the position this year, and Wings fans need to learn they don't own the award.)

Calder - Mason (9 shutouts is hard to ignore, plus I don't want it to go to Bobby Ryan). Doughty, Rinne, Wheeler all close contenders.

Byng - sorry, haven't given this one any thought

Selke - Mike Richards (stands out for his PK abilities; I don't see why it has to go to someone that can't generate offense as well as play great defense.)

Many excellent runner ups, but IMO...

Hart - Sydney Crosby; After the coach firing he lead his team to the 4th seed in the east. Dropped the gloves a few time too!

Norris - Mike Green; New record set, a pile of offensive points while being defensively responsible.

Calder - Steve Mason; Lead the league in shutouts and a close runner up in a few other categories. The Jackets in front of Mason wanted to win for what Mason does for the them. As well, first time the Blue Jackets make the playoffs in team history. Now that is a no brainer.

Byng - Pavel Datsyuk; Such a subjective award, akin to judging figure skating. But, when you look at Datsyuk's stats and 11 minor penalties in 81 regular season games, who else can you give this award to?

Selke - Pavel Datsyuk; When you consider "all" of the qualities that make up this award nobody covers off all the bullet points like Dasyuk.

Gotta love some of the unbiased opinions you're getting here Rich. Doughty for every award? lol.

Hart: A lot of people are trying to make a case for Malkin because he led the league in scoring. I honestly thought he was in the KHL half the season. I never heard his name. Would the Pens be in the playoffs without Malkin? Yes. Would the Caps be in the playoffs without Ovechkin? No. Oveckin gets the Hart

Norris: Mike Green may have set the record and piled up the most points, but last I checked it's the award for the best defenseman, not the highest scoring. The best defensemen in the NHL, by a mile, is Nick Lidstrom.

Calder: In any other year Doughty would win easily. But there's that Steve Mason guy. The Jackets aren't even sniffing a playoff spot without him. You could maker an argument for Mason winning the Vezina. Since he's a rookie, he'll win the Calder.

Lady Byng: Some of the names I see suggested above are laughable. Datsyuk is the runaway winner for the Lady Byng. He's really the only guy who should be considered. Plays solid 2 way hockey and never takes penalties.

Selke: The one award I do agree with from these guys is Handzus for the Selke. He was the Kings best forward all year. Played terrific 2 way hockey and never cost his team a goal, and he saved the team a bunch of goals with his defensive play. Kopitar would not have been nearly as good defensively this year without Zeus. Frolov scored many of those goals because Handzus covered his backside and got him the puck. Michael Handzus for the Selke.

Hart: Ovechkin.

Norris: Green.

Calder: Doughty. I'm not just saying this because I'm a King fan, I understand how great Mason has been this year but Drew shows so much maturity out on the ice, and was LA's best defenceman by far this year.

Byng: Datsyuk.

Selke: Datsyuk.

Norris- Green. He has had one of the greatest goal-scoring seasons of all-time, in regards to adjusted era numbers. His defensive statistics are also better than Lidstrom.

James Mirtle explains this pretty well.

B-Copter said:

Please, do NOT vote Green for Norris!

It is Lidstrom once again with the award (I know it gets old, but its not his fault).

One of the reasons Scott Stevens (Hall of Famer) never won a Norris was his lack of offense. In dedication to Scott, I do not think it would be right to vote for someone with below average defence, such as Green.

Might as well vote Ovechkin for Selke. He edges out Malkin because he scored more goals of course.

Starlight Author Profile Page said:

Hart - Steve Mason seems to have been doing the most for his team this season really. Ovechkin is always a candidate in the form he is in, I wonder how many goals he would have gotten if he had played in 1992/93 (the season when everyone and their mother got over 50 goals and 100 points).
Norris - Zdeno Chara most likely, but Nicklas Lidström is still just so damn good.
Calder - Drew Doughty (that many minutes per game, doing a solid job despite being on a non-playoff team, 5on5, pp and pk...) or Steve Mason (10 shutouts? Jeez. He's probably going to land with it no matter what you vote.)
Byng - I don't know enough about the rest of the league players in terms of sportsmanship and off-ice contributions for me to put anything down here. (Just for fun, someone should put in a vote for Avery for this one. Or maybe "Mirror Universe Avery".)
Selke - Well, having followed the Kings it's hard to not say Handzus here. I'm sure other players around the league have had good runs also though, Samuel Påhlsson is an unsung hero in this department for example.

HART TROPHY - Alex Ovechkin

NORRIS TROPHY - Zdeno Chara (he's the main reason Boston is the only team to allow fewer than 200 goals this year)

CALDER TROPHY - Steve Mason (#1 with 10 shutouts, 2nd in GAA... no brainer here. Though I hope Doughty gets your vote, Rich)

LADY BYNG TROPHY - Pavel Datsyuk (if not him, then Zach Parise)

SELKE TROPHY - Datsyuk again

Yup a strong field of runner ups in all categories.
