Since it wasn't televised, check out the hip check Drew Doughty put on Edmonton's Sam Gagner last night.

Ohhhh that was grimy!
Drew Doughty is a beast

Rich,

I thought you said you were going to post a clip of a hip check by Doughty. I watched the clip and I'm just confused- Why is Ray Bourque wearing number 8 in a King's sweater and why is Dave Gagner playing for the Oil? I mean it's an unbelievable clip of old time hockey and all, but come on Hammond... ;)

Hey Rich

Is there a clip of the move Simmonds made when he spun around a took a shot lefthanded? He didn't score, but it was a thing of beauty.

Great hit, no doubt about it. I can't wait till next season begins. Doughty is a kind of player that has within himself the ability to win championships. And hope his aura can rub off on the rest of the team.

Also watch immediately after the hit on gagner. Brown and Doughty do a nice 1-2 on Nilsson.

variable Author Profile Page said:

how can that hit NOT REMIND you of a classic rob blake hip/butt check????

drew is going to be a norris winner within four seasons...

he's just getting better and better...what a talent...!

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

How you can tell that's not a Rob Blake check:

(1) he hits him with his hip, not his ass.
(2) the puck doesn't proceed directly to the back of the Kings' net.

Doughty makes the check and stays in position. The puck stays in front of him. He doesn't take himself out of the play.

i think yr being a bit hard on blakey....

nevertheless...drew's got game and he's only getting better...!

That was a really great hit by Drew. It seemed like Gagner was a marked man last night.

Would DD be as good as he was this year if Rob Blake was his mentor instead of SOD? While I am not a RB hater, the best thing that could of happened to DD was that RB signed in SJ and we got SOD.

re blake:

it's true he checked with his ass
it's true it frequently took him out of position
it's true that his ass-checks often led to opponent's goals. I have vivid memories of several occasions in which the crowd's buzz over the hit was silenced by the other team's goal. Fond memories of being a season ticket holder...

variable Author Profile Page said:

look guys...

all i said that his check reminded me of blakey...one of the better parts of rob's game...

for all this allegorical negativity voiced at one of the kings best all-time defensemen...whether it's just or not...is missing the point...

the fact is that the hit that drew laid out last night is a prototypical rob blake hit....

did blakely sometimes get out of position? yes...

QUISP...

being a former season ticket holder, i remember the times when blakey made mistakes, too, that led to goals...but i also remember him being outstanding more times than not...

but drew...as great as he's been this year as a rookie...and as great as he will be...has made a few mistakes, non-check related, that have resulted in goals against...he will probably make some more...

maybe we should appreciate a good moment from a player that will have tons 'o' more to come...

That's what actually won us the game, the double whammy of Doughty/Brown! The Oil was steamrolling us from the second on & we were just holding on for dear life...until BAM! BAM! Just like Boyle getting his ass handed to him turned the tide in their favor, this gave us the legs to shut them down the rest of the game. Way to go boys!!!

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

I didn't say anything negative directed at anyone here. I am not a fan of Rob Blake. Accordingly, I don't think he's The King's Greatest All-Time Defenseman. Not that you're not entitled to think he is. Personally, I'd give it to Larry Murphy, but frankly it's possible that no-one has really earned that mantle yet, except by default. Why don't we just reserve it for Doughty, as if there isn't already enough pressure heaped on the kid...

Bernie9 Author Profile Page said:

Don't you actually have to play defense to be considered "The King's Greatest All-Time Defenseman"?? Murphy could put up points & maybe he learned how to use his smarts in Pittsburgh & Detroit, but on the defensive side of the game he was barely better Paul Coffey.

Doughty needs to get some tips from Luke Schenn on how to play tough and drop the gloves occassionally

nykingfan Author Profile Page said:

Khanon

Serious about that one?

Re: Rob Blake - If he hip checks a guy and takes him out, it's not his guy that's putting the puck in the back of the net.

If you want Doughty to drop gloves and spend 5 minutes at a time in the box, who's better than him that you'd like to see taking his minutes on the ice? Guys who drop the gloves are usually guys that aren't getting that many minutes.

Blake was a great player and probably the best defenseman in Kings history IMO. That's subjective but the way he left put people in a different frame of mind about him. If you go by just how he played his career here you can't dispute he was great.

I'm a product of physical play and in most cases agree every individual has the responsibility to protect himself and his teammates. With Doughty, I'm afraid I'm going to play favorites and say under no circumstances do I want him dropping the gloves. If I was coach, it would be clearly understood if somebody took a cheep shot at Doughty, EVERYBODY on the ice shall attack and attack with meaning. He is the future of this franchise and shall be protected as so. I just amazed my own self here. I am anti-favoritism to a passion, but I feel strongly here that Doughty should be protected at all costs.

Khanon,

if there's any way you can delete that message, please do and save yourself from this embarrassment. Luke Schenn needs to take lessons from Drew Doughty for about every single aspect in the game of hockey..

Duckhunter,

I agree to an extent. Drew is the future of this club, but if he's gonna play a physical game, then he will on occasion have to answer for it too. I'm gonna say that 9 times out of ten, greene or OD can fight to protect Drew, but that tenth time he needs to drop the glove just to show he has a pair and won't get pushed around.

And Khanon please tell me you really meant that schenn should be taking lessons from drew right?

for the record...

- i called rob blake "one of the best" kings defensemen...not "the" best as you claim i said...

- i never said you directed any negative comments towards any one poster...as you had defended...
you did, however, went after blake, which of course, you are fully allowed to do...we just disagree about the liability aspects of his game...cool...

- and i'm not offended...let's have a virtual beer...or kool-aid...as it seems to be yr beverage of choice...
the only time i've been somewhat offended...really more angry and disgusted on this site...was the unfortunate response by several posters to brownie's choice to miss a couple of games due to his son, mason, premature birth...that was really something else...

other than that...it takes a lot to "offend" me, especially in a monitored forum of fair comment and commentary...which we have chosen to call "blogging"...

variable -

sorry, I misread the "best"/"one of the" thing.

re negative comments: I know. I was just saying, in general (since flaming out on different commenters has been a topic of late) that I was only voicing my opinion on one player, not pushing back against any fan(s).

re the brown thing: yeah, that was horrible.

virtual beer! i raise my glass...
