Blogging the combine

The NHL draft combine is taking place this week in Toronto. I’ll be getting some comments from Dean Lombardi, and maybe a couple others in the organization, when it’s done, but for now, TSN is doing a live blog of the big testing/interview day at the combine…

Wow, guys I’m a little stunned. So far the unofficial top bench is 17 reps at 155 pounds. That’s it?! Trust me, I understand, that for the most part hockey isn’t about bulk, but that’s a bit weak isn’t it? I would have expected a little more from the top dogs of youth hockey.

Thanks for the link Mr. Hammond, that’s good stuff.

  • AK47

Only if Schroeder were a couple inches taller, I think he’d be in the top 5 for sure.. It’s unfortunate

  • mrbrett7

I agree AK…but their lack of size hasn’t stopped guys like Briere, Fluery and the like.

Hockey, unlike other sports, is one of those where size can help you, it can hurt you, but the size of your heart means more than any measurable…that’s why I love this game so much.

It reminds me of that quote from “Youngblood”

“Thank god there’s still a sport for short white guys”.

You should give it a try and see how many reps you can do at 155 lbs….Not saying you’re a whimp or anything, but unless you train all the time I’ll bet you won’t do many more than 17…it’s a lot harder than it sounds

  • variable

    no msp/mps…?

  • Irish Pat

Keep in mind that these kids are also working their tails off in various other workouts too. 17 reps isn’t anything to sneeze at considering these are kids who play hockey, not football. Colin Wilson was a beast in last year’s combine and blew away the competition with 21 reps. Just something to consider.

Interesting, I wonder if Burke told Schenn, in so many words, not to do the full workout?

  • Duckhunter

    Irish Pat,

That’s a good point. If their running it circuit style, then yes, that would make sense. If they’re given time to recoup(10-15 minutes) between stations then I stick by my statement.

    tantrum,

Not trying to sound combative or trying to make trouble, but 155 pounds for a top level athlete is not heavy in the least. I kid you not, in most H.S. programs, the kids worm up(12-15 reps)with 135 Ibs. before working out. There shouldn’t be anyone at this level that can’t do 50-80 push-ups in one shot. So even if you weighed 155 pounds, doing 17 reps should be on the easy side. Again though, if they’re running or biking until they puke and then asked to bench, I would totally understand the low reps.

    Quisp,

You’re boy Duchene is also a scholar, impressive!!

  • mrbrett7

Duckhunter…the importance of a football player lifting that kind of weight with those reps is FAR more important than a hockey player.

One caveat is that they have to do it in relation to a metronome. Which I imagine is a bit different than “do as many reps until you get tired.” If you happen to get out of sync with the metronome, they stop counting.

From the Central Scouting site, here is the description of the procedure:

    C. Bench Press Repetitions (150 lb): Conducted using a standard padded bench with 150 lb of free
weights (including the barbell) in time with the metronome.

    a. Repeated 150 lb bench presses are performed at a rate of 25 per minute in time with the metronome
(set the metronome at 50 so that each click signals a movement either up or down).

    b. The subject lies on his back on the bench and grips the barbell with thumbs approximately shoulder
width apart. The buttocks must remain on the bench with the feet on the floor. The starting position
of the bar is touching the chest at approximately the axillary line and the bar is pushed to full
    extension of the arms.

    c. Record the number of consecutive repetitions completed before the player falls behind the cadence.

Anyone watch the 1 on 1 video with Eveander Kane? He said the strangest question a GM asked if was if marijuana was legalized tomorrow, how many people on his team would be excited?

What the hell? DL seems like a strange cat sometimes, gotta wonder who asked him that.

OK I don’t know if you know who Darren Dutchyshen is but he’s a sportscaster up here in Canada on TSN. He’s about 5’11 and weighs 220 lbs of solid muscle, I kid you not, I’ve seen him in person. He just did the combine today for fun to see how it is and he managed to do 25 reps at 150 lbs…..12 reps at 135 is MILES apart from doing 17 reps at 150, even though it doesn’t look like it on paper…and don’t forget, these ARE high school kids….

  • Quisp

    Re bench press:

My understanding is, they disqualify any reps not performed exactly by the rules, e.g. you can’t bounce it off your chest. The test is worked out by university people to be very specific and narrowly defined, thus its use as a diagnostic tool. I’m trying to remember where I read about this, recently. But, can’t. Hockey News, maybe?

  • mike lopez

“Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson (ranked #2 among Europeans) has all the pieces, coming in a little over 6-foot-1 with a solid build and had a decent workout; nothing earth-shattering, but nothing that would seem to be cause for alarm either.”
quoted from combine blog at TSN.com

  • Duckhunter

    Don,

Thanks, that’s some good insight. Keeping your butt down and your feet flat definitely take a few reps away and having to keep a consistent tempo is quite interesting. I believe they were maxing out on push-ups as well before attempting the bench, so maybe I’ll give them a little slack….just a little:-)

    tantrum,

Just finished reading the report about Dutchyshen. I have no idea who he is. How old would you say he is? He did pretty well for a guy who’s older. He did 48-49 push ups at 220Ibs before putting up 25(?) at 155. That’s not bad for a guy who’s probably not in top shape. I say that because he could only do 10-11 sit ups. I still don’t think an old man(saying that loosely) should be outperforming the kids who are the best athletes hockey has to offer. I know the legs are top priority for hockey players, but could you imagine how much easier the transition would/could be if they worked their upper bodies a little more. Anyhow, I just hope we get another solid player at the draft this year. I’m ready to start winning. Good day gents

Of all furniture, benches are the ones that can be ordered online, as they are quite small, and at the same time can be boxed to a size that postal service can handle.

I read about an actuary who calculated that the odds of a man’s trousers falling down if he was wearing both a belt and suspenders was about 35,000 to one. What would be the odds of a man’s trousers falling down while wearing only a belt? What about only suspenders?

The concept of the online pharmacies was introduced in the market 10 years back, but at that time no one use to believe in the drugs sold by them. The situation changed as the time passed by. The main change occurred when the webmdpharmacy.com opted out the policy of the low costing of drugs than the shop vendors.
