Want to buy a NHL team?
As part of the ongoing story about Jim Balsillie's attempt to buy and move the Phoenix Coyotes, the Toronto Globe and Mail today wrote a piece about the process of buying a NHL team. The story, quoted in part below, talks about the 10-page application and the amount of information that must be submitted. Presumably, first and last month's rent also have to be provided.
On a somewhat related note, Bruce McNall was spotted at a Woodland Hills mall over the weekend. From what I understand, it's a popular McNall hangout!

``The questions range from the mundane - name, date of birth, social insurance number - to more unusual queries such as the birth place of the applicant's mother and father.
There are also questions about children, military service and requirement to list every residence for the past 10 years. Several questions involve business deals, including providing information about all real estate transactions.
Other questions are more pointed such as: Have you ever been arrested? Yes or No. If Yes, provide details about the charge, location and disposition. Another section is titled "litigation history" and starts by asking if the applicant has been a party to any litigation "including litigation alleging harassment or discrimination?" The application also requires applicants to provide all personal bank and brokerage account numbers as well as "personal references.''

Just as an FYI, the NHL sends out polls to fans with some regularity, usually focusing on marketing aspects like what teams fans want to see on NBC, etc. Today I got one that started with a few questions regarding PHX and the ownership situation including asking for the opinion on whether fans thought Balsillie should be allowed to purchase the 'Yotes and also if I thought he should be allowed to buy assuming he will move the team.
Don't know what that means, but it's clear the NHL is trying to gauge what fans think of the whole thing on some level.
It's obvious that the NHL doesn't want Balsillie as part of their clique, so why doesn't he try to restart the WHA and he can put franchises wherever he wants.
I got one word for Gary Bettman: CONTRACTION
If so, can the Kings get dibs on Bryzgalov?
The whole revive the WHA thing failed miserably when it was tried a few years back (circa the most recent lockout)- why would it work now?

J, I was saying that tongue-in-cheek! Certainly, though, he would have the money to start his own league if he wanted to and put all the teams in Canada if that's what he wants. I don't know why he wants to be part of an owner's club which so obviously doesn't want him.
Ask Mark Cuban that same question.
balsillie doesn't get a franchise unless bettman and daly are out of the league...
he might have a shot at being a minority owner if he's able to attach himself to a respectable, diplomatic candidate...but otherwise, he has buried himself...
and as BAKO and yrs truly have stated previously, toronto is holding the league somewhat hostage...kansas city, las vegas, hartford and seattle (pending arenas for las vegas and seattle) are all good choices for relocation and/or the possibilities of a combination of contraction/relocation...
i think that even though it might be in the league's best interest to accept balsillie's substantial (ridiculous) offer from an immediate financial perspective, a judge will not force bettman and the league/owners to accept anyone into their organization without what would be considered to be standard vetting procedure and proper due process...balsillie's lil' bankruptcy, vulture-like end round the coyotes and the league will not get rewarded in court...nor should it...the nhl, the players, the current owners and the fans should dictate the direction of the game...not a wannabee with lots of cash and a fleet of movers...
best interest to accept balsillie's substantial (ridiculous) offer from an immediate financial perspective,
