Alexander Frolov got a gold medal today, as Russia beat Canada 2-1 in the finals of the IIHF World Championships. Neither Frolov nor Canada's Drew Doughty recorded a point, but Russia goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had quite a game, with 37 saves.

Sweden beat the United States 4-2 in the bronze-medal game. Jack Johnson scored to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead and the game was tied 2-2 but Sweden scored in the third period, then scored an empty-net goal to clinch the game.

Ilya Kovalchuk was selected as the tournament's most valuable player. By a vote of coaches, Dustin Brown was selected as the second-best player on the U.S. team, behind Ron Hainsey.

Hey Rich:

Drew Doughty also got the Player of the Game. Its amazing a guy like Drew who is 19 and playing with Canada best available gets the PLayer of the Game in a gold medal match up!

Also it would be cool to mention our boy Loktionov won the OHL championship with his respected team the Windsor Spitfires. Its seems like our Russians are getting some hardware in the offseason!

Loktionov and the Spitfires will be battling for the Memorial Cup next week. Good Luck to them!

I really hope DL doesn't go after Kovalchuk... Instead, DL should go after Nash or Lecavlier.

khanon,

1) are you secretly Canadian? You keep mentioning DL going after Lecavalier and Nash, which I wouldn't mind since I'm from Ottawa..

2) How about your beloved Ducks going down 3-2? Seems like Detroit might actually finish them in Anaheim!

...or how about Nick Nickson being the TV commentator today for the cable channel US (Universal Sports?). That was a weird surprise. It was also weird seeing him doing a promo for Michael Phelps every 10 minutes.

No,I'm from LA. It may surprise you that I'm also in favor of bringing more than a few teams back to Canada also: Panthers, Lightning, Coyotes, Thrashers, Predators, and Bluejackets just to name a few. Canada is where the real hockey players come from, and I will always value a Canadian hockey player over any other country...

That means a lot man, might be the nicest thing to ever be typed by you.. I'm impressed

Russia has now won more World Championships (25) and Olympics (7 since first joining the olympics) than Canada. Someday it'd be nice to see a real RSL/KHL-NHL tournament, not this Victoria cup junk.

WWAMD- FWIW, a couple of us posted about Loktionov and the Spitfires a few days back when they won. I guess you may have missed that. Did they televise any of those games up in Ontario? It'd be nice if the OHL and WHL followed the QMJHL and televised their games online for free. I wonder if they'll keep doing so in the Mem. Cup since Rimouski is hosting.

BTW- Martin Jones and the Hitmen were upset by the Rockets in the WHL finals.

Said like a true racist...

You bring all those teams back to Canada, and the NHL dies as a league. It's not relevant now, and will become even less relevant in the country where the money comes from if you do that.

If you really want to do something...contract half those teams.

Is this 2009 or 1930's Nazi Germany?
"Canada is where the real hockey players come from, and I will always value a Canadian hockey player over any other country..." sometimes I can't believe what I read....

Khanon, quick life lesson, judge people individually, not on where they come from.

If the 92-93 Kings would have had 2 more Tomas Sandstroms, they win the Cup easily.

There are tough players and soft players in all countries, please think about what you are typing it's kinda disturbing.

Yah they show the OHL games on Comcast cable. I don't have that cable, but since I live in Windsor, I got to watch some games live and the others I watched on TV, but that was because it was on a local channel. I don't think the rest of Ontario got to watch it unless they had Comcast cable. I hope they broadcast the Memorial Cup, it would be great if Windsor brings that home.

mrbrett7 Author Profile Page said:

WWAMD...the NHL Network is broadcasting the Memorial Cup games (and did last year as well)...if you get that channel, have fun watching! I know I will (not so sure about the girlfriend).

NMKingsfan,
I agree with your comment 100%.
I'm sure you expressed what most of us feel.

I'd have to agree with Anthonyy as well.....amazing. I started to think that maybe Khanon was really Anthonyy, and Anthonyy did it so we would'nt think his posts were so bad after all......... khanon did say he was in law school, and Anthonyy said he was a lawyer.... Your plan worked Anthonyy.......... Just jokin

I just got work that I will be catching it on Rogers Sportsnet on my local TV. So I'm excited. Was hoping Martin would be at the Memorial Cup. Haven't seen him play yet! But none the less I can't wait to see my Spitfires wreck havoc and bring home the hardware!

Go Spits!

mrbrett7 Author Profile Page said:

I haven't really got to see any of them play, so I will take what I can get at this point. But, I must say, I'm REALLY excited to see Loikonov play...just the fact that Larionov is all over this kid, and has taken him under his wing says more than any of us can ever.

NMKingsFan,

"Is this 2009 or 1930's Nazi Germany?"

This comment is morally repulsive and I take offense... Lets talk about hockey, not Nazi Germany. Nothing racist about having a preference for Canadian hockey players. There's a reason why the KHL goes out of their way and overpays Canadian players like Chris Simon and Ray Emery. They value tough, North American players as well, and unfortunately for them, they don't breed very much of them. Once again, nothing racist and never bring up the Nazis when making a comparison to preferring canadian hockey players. I wouldn't mind a nazi comparison with Ahmadinejad or Al-qaeda, but not hockey my friend. I expect an apology asap.

Yeah, it's because some, I said "some", Russians are stupid and will overpay for Canadians that the garbage teams of the NHL don't even want.khanon81 said:

Khanon, this is my last waste of time on retorting to your distorted view of things.
"breed" is another racist comment. "develop" used in it's place would have been fine.
There was a famous incident of a sport commentator who got fired for talking about "breeding".
Google Jimmy the Greek if you don't believe me...
If you still need a lesson Google Al Campanis....
Get a clue!

Richard Hammond,

Why did you delete my comments?

Richard Hammond,

There's a great deal of double standards that take place on this blog, and when one person, such as myself, has a different view about how the NHL should be played and what type of players should be acquired to attain that particular style, I am cascaded here by most, called numerous different types of harsh names, and belittled. I've never seen you come out with a comment warning them, nor have I seen you delete those type of comments. I feel as though you, as most of your readers, share a certain bias and attempt to silence anyone who disagrees. Not my cup of tea...

If you want to silence those with opposing beliefs, feel free to ban me.

I deleted a comment at the same time as yours, there have been plenty of other warnings, and I have zero interest in debating this. If you don't like the policy, you're free to not visit. Your contributions, as long as they are properly expressed, will be valued.

As someone who has not waded into this firestorm until now, I would just like to share my two cents:

(1) for myself, clashing opinions are interesting and fun. They generate open debate.
(2) "let me school you" is not an opinion. It has the opposite effect of expressing a point of view. What it does is, it shuts down debate. Certainly, such comments signal that no debate is possible.
(3) Expressing the same opinion over and over again, regardless of context, loses its meaning. Whether that opinion is "TM is an old idiot," "AEG is evil and we're all blind" or "Euros bad/Canadians good" is irrelevant. Say it once, you're expressing an opinion, or at least the chapter heading of an opinion. Say it over and over again, it's message board autism.

Quisp, you said it well, my friend. When someone beats a dead horse again and again and again, it soon loses its relevance.

I wouldn't have to elaborate or repeat my comments if people wouldn't continue to call me out. You guys are the reason why I "beat a dead horse again and again and again."
