Brown, Johnson, Quick invited to camp

Kings forward Dustin Brown, defenseman Jack Johnson and goalie Jonathan Quick (and yes, I did miss Quick) are among the 34 players selected to the U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Orientation Camp, which runs from Aug. 17-19 in Woodbridge, Ill. Both Brown and Johnson represented the U.S. in the recent World Championships tournament. Here’s the full list of invited players…

Forwards: David Backes, David Booth, Dustin Brown, Dustin Byfuglien, Ryan Callahan, Chris Drury, Scott Gomez, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, Jamie Langenbrunner, Ryan Malone, Mike Modano, Kyle Okposo, T.J. Oshie, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Bobby Ryan, Paul Stastny

Quick not worth mentioning in the headline or did you just miss that?

  • Paul from Oxnard

A bit of a surprise to see Quick invited, but a good surprise. 😀

  • Fake Anthony

There’s a certain Oiler that is not on that list. Shocking….

  • Matt R

    Congrats boys!

Hopefully Quick makes the team and sees some game time. That’d be a great thing for him I think! Going to be diffifult behind Miller and Thomas though.

Anyone remember the last time the Kings had players on the US Olympic squad? Let alone three!?

  • Garrett

Do you guys give this any credibility?

Hockeybums is a joke.. They don’t know anything and have the worst sources

I’m not sure what what Team USA does with goalies, but Team Canada always names 3 goalies to the team. Only two are on the bench, but they bring a third in case of injury. So if USA does the same, Quick would at worst be in the dressing room and team meetings learning valuable lessons and a winning attitude from some of the best in the game. Maybe this announcement will be a real boost for Quick to come out of the gates lights out this year and really push for that backup spot behind Thomas. Could be a turning point in his career…

As you pointed out Fake A–no POS… how his stock has fallen.

If Quick turns out to be the real deal (which I think he is), DL will have some nice goaltender assets to trade (Bernier, Jones, Zatkof, etc)

    Garrett —

Lets do the math. The twins want $12MM/year. The Kings, after re-signing Johnson and Purcell, then adding $12MM for the Sedins, would be at at least $58MM. $59MM if Hickey makes the team. Needless to say, people are going to have to be dealt away to make that work. But let’s pretend DL worked it out, by dumping some salary somewhere.

    Then you would have:

Okay, in order to squeeze in under the cap, DL would have to dump some salary. There are exactly three candidates for dumping: Stoll, Frolov and Johnson. (Handzus has a NTC but maybe he could be shipped to a contender and he would be happy — I doubt it though; he’s expensive.) I would get rid of Stoll, because if you don’t there is no place for Schenn to play EVER, since both whichever Sedin is a center and Kopitar would be your 1 and 2 centers for the next decade. So let’s say we dump Stoll for picks. Now we’re under the cap. And that’s not a bad line-up.

Now it’s next summer. The cap IS coming down. To around $50MM, maybe lower. The Kings are at $50MM now, but they have to re-sign Frolov, Cliche, Lewis, Quincey and Quick. Conservatively, that’s 5, 1, 1.5, 3 and 3MM. $14.5MM. Add that to $50MM, you’ve got $64.5MM. You’re $14.5MM over the cap.

And the next season, you’ve got Moller, Simmonds and Doughty. That’s another $9-10MM in cap space you need to create, about $7.5MM of which you’ve done already because Handzus and Williams are off the books as UFAs (probably traded for picks at the previous deadline, unless of course we’re on a cup run). So figure you lose those guys and re-sign the three kids and your cap goes up another couple million.

In order to get under the cap for 2010-11, Frolov would undoubtedly have to be dealt, as would two others with a decent salaries, I’m thinking Johnson and…I don’t know…who’s left? We already dealt Stoll in the summer of 09, Frolov and Johnson before the deadline in ’10 (as we just said), and Williams and Handzus are going by summer of ’11. I guess you dump Greene and hope that Teubert is ready to take his place.

So, in two years (2011-12), this would be your team:

Actually, you know what? That’s not a bad team. But, the price:

    Deal Stoll NOW.
Deal Frolov and Johnson before next season’s trade deadline.
    Deal Greene next summer.
Deal Handzus and Williams before the deadline of 2010-11.

And when Schenn, Loktionov, Voynov, Hickey and Teubert come up for contracts, and the Sedins are literally unmovable because of their huge contracts with 7 years left on them, you have absolutely no choice but to deal…

    Kopitar and Brown.

This is why I think it’s a bad idea.

  • Matt R

How is anyone expected to field a competitive team with a cap this low and elite player still expecting to make the same ammount of money? Doesn’t it seem like players are expecting too much? Maybe as the cap goes down, players salaries should be automatically adjusted by the same percentage. What if the cap were to suddenly drop 5 million one year? There would be a number of hockey players out of work. They’d all start migrating to the KHL. The NHL would be a second rate league…wait, it already is! Thanks Gary…

  • Bring Back the Shield Jersey

Quisp- I follow all your cap talk, it’s a part of the business/game that is interesting but I can’t be bothered to keep track of it all. I’m glad you can be.

On your previous post, Brown is missing under the years 2011-2012 (but Kopi isn’t). Then at the bottom you say Kopi & Brown will have to be dealt. Ommission or does Brown get dealt earlier?

It seems that the Kings can handle ONE big contract but not two. I gotta think that in a way, the Kings drafting of Schenn was a blessing in disguise for Toronto, or else sooner or later the Schenns become the same kind of brotherly albatross that the Sedins are.

  • Quisp

    Bring Back –

Oops. You’re right. I left off Brown. Swap out Vey and stick in Brown. Where I don’t know.

I completely agree: one big contract, not two.

    Matt R –

Exactly. Players are going to get paid less if the league revenues go down. That’s the whole idea. It’s going to make next summer very interesting.

    Team USA looks good…real good!
    Tim Thomas
    Jack Johnson/Ron Hainsey,
    Ryan Sutter/Brian Rafalski
    Brooks Orpik/Rob Scuderi
    Ryan Whitney/Paul Martin/Rob Scuderi

    Patrick Kane/Paul Statsny/David Backes
    Zach Parise/Joe Pavelski/Bobby Ryan
    Dustin Brown/TJ Oshie/Phil Kessel
    Ryan Kesler/Scott Gomez/Jamie Langenbrunner

  • Moondoggie

Talk about stock rising….Congratz to Quick as well as Brownie & JMFJ. No surprise on the last two but Quick, a Kings goalie asked to tryout??? When do you remember that happening? To the US team??? It looks like quite a team they have assembled.

Hard to believe where this team is and where they’re going. The Kings are light years ahead of where they were this time last season. Quispie, great analysis, thank you! Like I keep saying, the best is truly yet to come for LA and that best just may be around the corner.

Good luck in the hunt tomorrow, July 1st!

  • 28 KINGS

With the signing of Scuderi, it’s quite possible the Kings could have 4 guys on the USA Olympic team.Pretty cool.
