A $600,000 day

| | Comments (13) |

For reasons that I'm still not completely certain, the Stars' hiring of Marc Crawford means a $600,000 windfall to the Kings organization. I have sought clarification from the Kings' Jeff Solomon, because I'm not certain how Crawford was still on the Kings' payroll. Unless my initial information was wrong, Crawford signed a three-year contract in May 2006. I'm told that there were no compensation issues, so that's not it. Any contract experts out there?

Compensation from Crawford for convincing the Kings that acquiring Cloutier & Alyn McCauley was somehow a good idea?

I have wonder...or may be guess...that it could be an incentive based clause or perhaps something in Crawford's contract that states that he would not be allowed to coach a Western Conference team within a certain of his contract expiring.

That's all I've got.

If memory serves me, Crawford signed a 3 year contract in 2006 but somewhere along the way he also had a 4th year option. When he was fired in 2008 (after 2 years) he requested as termination that he be paid the third year AND the option (4th year).

2009-2010 season, when he will coach the Stars, is that 4th year. So Dallas and the Kings must have worked out some arrangement for Stars to buy out or take over that last year.

Don't know if the option 4th year was a full buyout or a partial. Time - and details - will tell. There was probably a clause put in by Crawford's agent or Kings (at signing of contract or at termination) that if Crow found another NHL coaching job the Kings wouldn't have to pay Crawford, his new team would.

Just speculation on my part, but maybe when a coach gets fired the team that lets the coach go can reduce the payment of each subsequent check thereby making it easier to afford a new coach while still honoring the contract of the previous coach. Kind of like refinancing a loan; lower payments and longer term. What made me think of this is when a player gets bought out they get paid during twice the term of the contract but the team only pays for half of the amount they would have paid the player for each pay period. If Crawford was still getting paid by the Kings beyond his 3 year contract maybe he was receiving smaller checks then when he coached and now that the Stars have hired him the Kings are now being paid off for what's left so they can be off of the hook. That was really long-winded and I hope it made sense.

Where are you? We need your insight...

Crawford signed a 3 year contract plus an option.
I guess that the Kings no longer have to pay for Crawfords option.
That's all. DL must be relieved.

Thank you, Anthonyy...

I wrote half hour ago a longer post that still hasn't arrived. Short version:

When MC was fired he had 1 contract year left plus the aforementioned 1 yr option. The termination agreement was that Kings had to pay the option too (season 2009-2010).

Obviously, Stars now take care of that option with their hiring of MC.

Who gets the most hair style points, Crawfish or Mullet Melrose? My money is on Crawfish's skunky mane.

God, I'm old. Bet most of you guys never heard that old radio/BW TV commercial.

At least Markie C. won't have to sit on those hard little stools on those late Saturday Hockey Night In Canada broadcasts, looking like he needs a little dab of Preparation H.

$600,000.00/Can we sign JMFJ now? Or is that just his father's handling fee?

Seems like it’s already been months since the last Kings game... Oh yeah, it has been.

How many days until the draft? Fifteen? Does the presence of Crawford in Dallas mean the Kings will trade with them now? Is this a new conspiracy, to add to the Philadelphia conspiracy? Can we get Mike Ribeiro for a bag of pucks and a draft choice? Will this season never end?

I hate golf.

At least were not Tampa Bay.They will be paying Melrose 2.25 million for the remaining years of his contract. Not a bad pay day for only coaching 16 games.

Good point, 28 Kings.
