Hockey News discusses `intrigue' around No. 5
Ryan Kennedy, my colleague at The Hockey News, wrote a nice blog item today about the potential drama involving the No. 5 overall pick held by the Kings. Ryan particularly gives a good breakdown of a likely scenario, one in which Toronto's Brian Burke might attempt to jump up to the No. 4 or No. 5 spot in order to grab Brayden Schenn and complete the Schenn daily double.

Ok, so what do you think Rich? If you're Dean and Brian Burke comes walking over on the draft floor and asks for the #5 pick, what do you want in return?
Toronto has nothing we want so I doubt DL will swap anything with them.
However I think we have a powerful barganing chip with the 5th! Friday is going to be a crazy day I think!
If i am DL i want their first in '09 and '10.
For anyone who is interested in watching, NHL.TV has put together a nice group of video packages of all the top prospects in the draft. The videos entitled "2009 NHL Entry Draft" with the player's names are the ones that have highlights and commentary from EJ Maguire, the head of NHL Central Scouting. The videos entitled "Draft Prospect" with the name are interview tapes with the kids. Just go to www.nhl.tv and click the Draft Channel, then you'll find 6 pages of videos on the right side. Good watching if you have some free time.
What I'd really like to see is the Kings trading up to 3rd and taking Duchene (not sure what that would cost). Since that's not likely, the Kings are still in good shape picking 5th. If Atlanta takes Kane, then the Kings will draft Schenn. If Burke trades with Atlanta and takes Schenn, then the Kings will end up with Kane. It's a win-win. Toronto doesn't have much to offer in terms of NHL ready prospects or players.
So what do you do? In my opinion, you just keep the pick, and pick Schenn, Kane, or MPS, in that order, whoever is there.
But...someone may come up and offer you the world, so that begs the question, what do you do?
This is why Lombardi is paid to do his job, and we sit here and get to be critical after the fact...not a decision I would want to make.
Rich,
Assuming the Kings keep their pick, do you think Luc Robitaille might go up and announce their selection? I believe he is going to be in Montreal and it would be pretty neat to see Luc announce the pick in the city where he was drafted himself and where he grew up.
What would it costs us to try and get another pick 6, 7, or 8? Our second and third this year and first or second next year? I like all the top eight prospects. I would not want to trade the fifth pick unless it was for a top 10 forward straight up. Keep the pick and try to move up with our second rounder. I'm still hoping for MPS, SPEEEEDDDDD!!!! "ELITE SPEED"
I've been so busy lately and have hardly had any time to keep up with all the pre-draft goings on. Is the draft feed going to be available online?

@Deadcatbounce: You can watch round 1 on Versus Friday night and the rest of the draft on the NHL Network on Saturday. All live.
Should make for an interesting draft
I'm hoping for:
TOR trades __________ to TB for #2
TOR Picks Hedman
TOR Trades Hedman to LA for #5 & _________________
I think this could happen, but I'm looking for people to fill in the blank. I've asked Quisp on the last thread for his opinion on this.
Hedman follows the Kings and would really like to play for us. Doughty was the same way and look how well he did for us this year. I'd like a repeat by Hedman if we have a shot without giving up too much.
Ha! Watch them trade the 5th to Edmonton for sully and the 5th
I meant Sully and the 10th
Lead story on TSN right now. TB might move #2, Might not.

What about trading one of our goalies for the Av's first round pick? They need a goalie. What else would they want?
Just for fun, here is my two cents for this draft/offseason.
1. Head in to the draft, retain the #5 pick and have a decent shot at Schenn. If available, draft him. The Kings need another tough Western Canadian guy, with a nice scoring touch.
2. Because the team does not necessarily have to sign Schenn, without loosing his rights. I think the Kings try and go after Marty Havlat. True, like Gaborik he is often injured. Given that, he just came off a season where he played a full season. And proved he can be an elite level scorer. Plus, he was on the B-Hawks. Which is a team that is built on youth themselves. And being only 27, COULD be a valuable asset. And if Schenn hangs around the roster at the beginning of the season, and proves to not be out of place in the NHL, sign him to his ELC and roll the dice on him.
3. Keeping open to the idea that if there is a deal to be made which makes for the Kings, evaluate and decide accordingly. Honestly, I do not see dealing Fro + JJ + Boyle/Moulson/whoever... for the likes of a Vinny or Heater. Vinny is going to make over $10 Mil this coming season, which is $7.5ish mil (New contract kicks in July 1 plus a bonus of $4 million. Heater's deal isn't much better with him earning around the same base pay that Vinny will receive this season.
* Teams now simply can not win by dealing picks and prospects for veteran players anymore. Both the Wings and the Pens have both built their teams though strong and smart draft choices. Not by dealing for free agents with a 2 1/2 year window to produce.
From what I read, and listen to in terms of NHL "experts". The common denominator in the Kings discussion is that the Kings a close to being a contender for the playoffs than their record may indicate. I certainly hope they are too.
Which ever way it turns out. This should be one interesting couple of days.

Well, if I'm Colorado and you call asking about the third pick overall, I'd want Doughty because I need help on the blue line as well or else it's a nonstarter. You can't get something for nothing and I'd be just as happy to select Matt Duchene.
And, yes, I am a Kings fan and, no, I wouldn't make that trade, but you have to look at trade proposals from the other guy's point of view, too.
youre right about that deadcat! I think that some in here keep forgetting that...
Personally I'd be very happy to see the Kings draft Schenn.... but has anyone considered that w someone as "intent" as BB in the mix that Schenn could refuse to sign a proper contract w the Kings cause he wants to be playing w his bro in Toronto and look to be traded after his first two/three years were up in LA. I'd very much like to see the Kings avoid this sort of scenario.
You mean kind of like Lindros did when he refused to play for Quebec?
Actually, not that he would refuse to play for the Kings by any means, but I just meant that after the initial three years on the basic entry level contract, that when it came time to do his first proper negotiated contract, if BB was making a lot of noise, and if Schenn truly did want to play w his brother, well, who is to say that he would make it easy for the Kings to sign him.
The commotion wrt JJ and getting him signed. Maybe it's not as bad as it's been made out to be (according to DL), but at the same time I get the impression that it's not going easily either. That's what I'm sort of referring to if that makes sense. In other words, even though the Kings could improve, make the playoffs, etc., if Schenn would always want his desire of playing w his brother to be fulfilled, is that really what you want in a player on your team? Just a thought.
P.S. I think I've started to think that way since I never would have imagined the problems that arose with Cammilleri when he was in his first year, and then what "seems" to be happening w JJ. Granted they are very different situations, but it makes me sort of wonder, well, what next?
Great thought nr. 6!
I agree 100%-not a great situation potentially.
This i why I will fictitiously sacrafice my left nut if DL takes Schenn. It just is not going to happen. DL and BB are friendly and DL knows BB wants Tavaras or at least Schenn. So, as I posted yesterday....what will it cost BB to swap the 5th for the 7th?? Hagman,2nd rounder bla bla bla. Or will DL throw in a prospect to help BB get the 4th from ATL?
According to Kovulchuk.....ATL needs to make some aquisitions and be a playoff contender or he wont sign an extention. So, Kaberle and the 7th for the 4th, should be achievable. I dont see ATL wanting JJ or comparable. ATL is fairly stocked with younger D men. They want some veteren help.
"Well, if I'm Colorado and you call asking about the third pick overall, I'd want Doughty"
Valid point, but that's a huge overpayment to move up two spots, no?
Trade the 5th to Toronto for my fellow german Grabovski and the 7th. Then take MPS and be happy.
