1 more year in Junior, with a nice big increase in
offensive stats, along with another 7-10 lbs, and he'll be ready to be an NHL rookie-of-the-year candidate in 2010-11.
I love this pick!! Only Dechene would have been better (for us), but Schenn's extra grit factor makes
it all worthwhile.
But later this summer, I just hope we can get a quality FA or 2, this time around.
Beauchemin and Havlat would mean POs, IMO.
If only we could be so fortunate!
OK, OK,...I'll settle for Ohlund and Antropov,
but ONLY on 2-year contracts.
Maybe this guy can even try out for the Team Canada WJC team next year...He wasn't good enough this year...unlike so many others drafted tonight. What a joke...taking a lunch bucket guy like Schenn with the 5th pick. His top end is a 2nd (more likely 3rd) line center. We need more out the 5th pick in the draft. Sad.
s2 maybe you should have told the King's scouts that.. I mean they only do this for a living and could obviously benefit from your wisdom.
I hate to say it, but I still feel character guys get taken in round 2. Game changers should be in round 1. We have a ton of good players, but who will lead them to take it into the next gear, show them what they can do?
Look at crap players like Malone turning into all stars after seeing what Malkin can do with the puck everyday? Or the nasty edge of a Pronger inspiring the team to take no s from anyone. We are sorely lacking this still. DD is the closest we have to a franchise player.
If this guy turns into Mike Richards (as many scouts say he has the potential to), I could give a fuck what round he was drafted in. If MPS and others are going to be so much better than Schenn, seems to me they'd have been ranked higher.
WTF, I agree with DD being that franchise guy, but I think Kopi can be, as well. He defintely has the ability to lead and can get to the net in ways his teammates can't. He's still maturing and Murray needs to give him some slack ...Schenn definitely shows a toughness that seems similar to Brown's. It's just what they need. Like the pick.
I guess s2 is confused and thinks we drafted Brandon Shane, and not the guy who was ranked 4 through 6 by just about every (legitimate) source I've seen and whom every knowledgeable person in the media seems to agree was the only choice to be made at the time.
@Jordan
I am not sure if you were referring to my post, but I was not a MPS band wagoner, I was more fringe and wanted Cowen. Guys that are supposed to be pretty good at everything are great, but usually do not excel in one area. We need the guys that can do that. A punishing defenseman, a guaranteed sniper, a Oats like set up man.
Richards is the S and I would love to see Schenn pan out like that, but he is not a prolific scorer and what made Richards stand out was how he found his scoring touch. It made him a much more attractive player. The difference is the Flyers had players like Gange who are born snipers so he was not needed to score goals, it was just gravy, who do we have? A team full of role players is hard to do well with without finishers, set up guys or punishers.
Without them you get a team like the Wild (es[ecially when Gabby is out), great roll players not winning a ton of games.
I might add that in THN Draft Preview they speak incredibly highly of him. Also, a guy who assesses the draft for nhl network yesterday called Kane And Schenn two of his favorite players in the entire draft. So how do some of these people who say what a bad pick Schenn is know this? If you guys are that knowledgeable then why aren't you earning your living working in the scouting department for an NHL team. Boy, really.... Hickey and Schenn are poor picks and they haven't even played one single NHL game between them.
Personally from what I've seen Dean Lombardi has a far better drafting record than many many people who have been GM's in the NHL. Why don't you at least give each of those guys, what, shall we say 30 NHL games before you write them off!
Also Anthonyy, if BB is such a gem of a GM and He Wanted Schenn, yet DL drafts the Same Player BB wanted and he's lousy. Now if you can explain that one then I will forever bow down at the temple of your hockeydom.
