Tippett out, Crawford in?
In some weird type of Kings cross-karma, TSN reported today that the Dallas Stars have asked for permission to talk to Marc Crawford, who is still technically under contract/getting paid by the Kings. Dave Tippett, a former Kings assistant under Andy Murray, had a 271-156-28-37 record as Dallas coach, but the Stars finished 12th in the West this season. When I ran into Crawford during the Ducks' first-round series, he expressed an interest in returning to coaching.

I'd like to see the Stars at least give an interview to Guy Carboneau. The guy (no pun intended) has a track record, not to mention a history in Dallas.
I just thought of this and have no idea if it is possible or not. Crow has 2 years left on his contract and we own his rights. Tippett has 2 years left on his contract and the Stars own his rights.
Could we effectively trade Crow's rights to Dallas for Tippett's rights? I'm not sure of the salaries, but in case we have a sudden coaching issue with Murray, Tippett could step in already under contract.
We already are pot committed with Crow, so why not turn the situation into one where we are paying the salary of someone that could possibly HELP us instead of simply paying them off. Think of it like an insurance policy, using money that was previously being thrown away and written off. We can still write it off, but now we have an opportunity to put it to use.
Get this guy now! He was great with our offence/PP when he was with us.
Pretty sure you can't trade coach for coach in the NHL. Although the Kings did trade for Red Kelly from Toronto the Kings first year in the league. Kelly was already retired as a player and the Kings only wanted him to coach, but Toronto wouldnt give him up without a trade.
In essence, if the Stars sign Crow, the Kings will no longer be on the hook for his salary, so I say go for it, why waste the money? I think Tippett will end up getting an NHL coaching position at some point. He did great things for Murray's special teams in LA, and did a nice job in Dallas, so I think his services will be in demand at some point.
I think Guy Carboneau deserves a shot at the job as well, another one to think about would be Kirk Muller who also has ties to Dallas and I believe is an asst. coach in Montreal at the moment.
My dream is to have Murray and Hardy switch and to have Tippett coach the PP. Can you imagine? A tough as nails, no BS, defensively minded KING in Hardy coaching the team and morale, with a very sound and smart defensively Murray coaching the defense and Tippett, an awesome offensive strategist who I guarantee could get more out of Kopitar than Kompon or Johnson ever could. Mmmmmm.....
... and then there is reality. Atleast we still have Hardy in some capacity!
I do reserve hope that in 2 years when I think Murray's time will be up, Hardy will take over as head coach. Convincing Tippett to be an assistant coach might be difficult. He doesn't strike me as a guy who will be happy switching to commentating or anything, and there are open head coach jobs to had.
The thought of Tippett coaching Parise and Zajac is scary.
whoops... JohnsTon. As in, Mike.
I too would like to see Tippett coach the Kings.
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG improvement over what we have right now. We'd become playoff team overnight.
But i don't see DL doing anything adverse to his bossom buddy TM. Those two go a long way. All the way back to Philly.
Assuming that Dallas hires Crawford, I like the fact that they would be taking a step backwards. That should guarantee them last place in the Pacific!
I agree Tip is a great coach. He also got a raw deal when "given" last summers FA acquisition.
But, TM did a great job last year with the Kings. Why interrupt the progress that is being made?
Tippet is a crap coach, as is Crawford. TM is a wonderful coach, not to mention he seems like a likable human being. How can you dislike TM? He made the Kings a very good defensive team for the first time in the history of this organization. Those who understand hockey know full well that defense is integral to winning a cup, and now that the TM has the boys playing defense fairly well, the offense will come with the addition of Vinny/Nash, Clowe, etc... I have full faith in not only TM, but DL, and I simply don't understand why you guys don't...
There's only one coach I would take over TM: Randy Carlyle.
Need I remind U of the franchise record for being shut out set under TM?
khanon, I love how casually you say Vinny/Nash, Clowe.
That's like saying Broduer/Miller, Biron.
I get your point of 'tough' guys and all, but talk about players living in different stratospheres.
Though Clowe on this team would be pretty sweet...
I like the idea of bringing Tipp back, great power play guy, good coach. The Kings PP hasn't been the same since he left. Both he and TM would make an excellent pair. I wouldn't mind....
Tippett play for Philly once...there's your Philly connection.
Wow...that didn't take long. Crawford got the job.
I still don't think its going to help Dallas return to glory that easily. The vets on that team aren't getting any younger.
I love this move as a Kings fan. Tippett is a good coach. This is a case of a new GM wanting to put his guy at the helm. This is a stupid move by the Stars and will only hurt the team.
I would love for Tippett to rejoin the King's staff and relive the last successful years this organization has had.
Crawford did get hired.
I bet DL is relieved that he doesn't have to pay anymore of TM's contract.
In the beginning, I didn't like MC. all that line juggling and so forth. But towards the end, he did get it together and did good.
Kopitar, Brown, Sully, Frolov, Cammalleri, Visnovskoy had their best seasons under Crawford.
Not under TM. I'd rather have Crawford over TM any day.
Marc Crawford is the new Dallas Stars head coach?
Congrats Dallas,
Your organization officially just took two steps back..
Fire Jamie Kompon and replace him with Dave Tippett. Please...
"Kopitar, Brown, Sully, Frolov, Cammalleri, Visnovskoy had their best seasons under Crawford."
The Kings also had their worst seasons as a team under Crawford. Why the double standard between Crow and Lombardi? Why praise Crawford for "leading" this team to 28th and 29th? Would you rather Kopitar and Brown have 100 points each and the Kings miss the playoffs, or 70 points each and make the playoffs? The individual stats don't matter, it's the points, and like it or not, the Kings were not progressing under Crawford.
"Kopitar, Brown, Sully, Frolov, Cammalleri, Visnovskoy had their best seasons under Crawford".
Yes, on one side of the ice. But, you need to play a 2way game to win playoff games. Do you want to make the playoffs or do you want to win in the playoffs? TM has asked Kopi, Brown, and Fro to be complete players and they responded well.
Crawford will do fine if the vets can come back 100%, but TM is by far the best coach for this Kings team.
cristo - good to hear you are busy
Agreed Erik K.
Crawford is not a bad coach, but he failed on the defensive end with LA. Like players, I believe coaches too can have "bad seasons". But when you have consecutive bad years, you gotta make the change.
anthonyy...just one thing I'd like to point out about TM. The main goal asked of TM when he was hired was to lower the overall GAA. In that capacity, he succeeded. I'm sure his goal looking at next season is now to maintain the GAA where it is, and bring up the goals for. So at the end of next season, if he failed in that capacity, we can then criticize him as not meeting expectations. Until then, he's been exceptional in delivering what was asked of him. So its not time to declare him a failure. There's honestly no intelligent reason to. He did EXACTLY what was asked of him.
In regards to Tippett and the Kings, I'm curious to see if he'd be interested in maybe handling a lesser role as an assistant. But then again, he's worthy of another shot as a head coach and I'm sure a few teams out there are intrigued. Perhaps the coyotes once Gretz is out???
The Devils still need to find a new head coach. It might be a good situation for anybody to walk into there.
deadcatbounce
I've been hearing on HNIC that Jaques Lemare is gaining interest from NJ. He would fit with exactly with what Lamorello like to do with his teams. D first, win the 2-1 games.
Rumors are fun
Eric K,
Well said..
The only reason why Crawford is still getting a shot at a head coaching job is because he won a cup. However, people don't realize that any head coach, even Andy Murray, would have won at least one cup with that team they had in Colorado. Marc Crawford hasn't done a damn thing since, the players hate him, not to mention he sounds like a girl every time he opens his mouth. I've always believed that the team plays and takes on the personality of the coach, and as we all know, Marc Crawford is a nervous, angry reck which translates into his lesser talented teams playing that kind of style.
Also, ever since the Burtuzzi incident, MC refuses to dress a tough team. Is it me, or do most people on this blog really dislike TM? I really don't understand how you can dislike the guy... He's smart, experienced, seems generally like a nice human being.
maraudking, I tend to agree that rumors can be fun and interesting, but as far as the Kings are concerned any player who is the media's latest threat to be moved is going to have the Kings as a potential suitor just because of the salary cap situation. That's why I don't put a lot of stock into Lacavallier, Heatley, or anybody else coming here. If it happens it happens, but no sense getting worked up over it before then. Still, some of the trade scenarios people put forth are quite amusing...
Boy are the Stars in for it.... Niewendyk should have retained Tippett. He was winning and last season was an aberration for them. Now they get a taste of Hockey Crawford style.
I got one piece of advice for Niewy: Make sure you don't put up Dan Cloutier in a Super 8 motel. He hates that.
Terry Murray is Dean's best signing to date. Minus TM last season, we would be drafting Tavares or Hedman this year.
deadcatbounce, I can't agree with you more. Rumors are exactly that. Rumors are only fun for the fans/sports writers to mess with and play some fantasy hockey. I wish people wouldn't put so much stock in to these rumors.
They should ban Eklund from using a computer, or his brain for that manner
maraudking,
Agreed about the NHL. Can't just be buying up UFA's. Exhibit A) NYR.
as for Eklund,
he uses his brain? I always kind of thought of Eklund the same way South Park thinks of Family Guy's writers. A bunch of manatees stole all the hockey balls.
Ers - so true
