seriously Anthony, you cry all the time about how DL is the worst GM and when he makes a absolute amazing trade you still cry?

There is seriously no pleasing you, this trade just turned the Kings into a playoff team.

I'll say this much.

Happy 4th of July guys.

look at it this way

the kings now have 5 potential 30 goal scorers
smyth is the perfect mentor for brownie as a player and a captain
smyth will pay the price, he is not a soft player in anyway and will plant his butt right in front of the net and get dirty goals
the kings didnt lose any major pieces to the buzzle, no addition by subtraction

i like quincey as much as the next person and yes he will be a good d-man for years to come, but the kings have many prospects who will be as well (hickey, voinov, martinez to name a few) but if he's the only part of the trade that kind of stings then youre in pretty good shape. Smyth is a legitimate first liner.

From now on if I see anthonyy's name on a post will not read it. I love this site for serious debate but anthonyy is beyond ridiculous.

Guys....
We remember how a certain King leveled and hurt Smyth really bad last season,...now they are teammates.
But do you remember a few seasons ago, when laBarbara was in goal, and Smyth ran him over, and hurt Lababss?
I hate Labarbara,..so i love Smyth.

TweenerSongs said:

You gotta love Ryan Smyth. How can you not? The guy is a perfect fit for any team, gives his all and finishes. My only problem is definitely with Q. What a surprise he was. You knew he was decent, showed a lot of promise in Detroit, and I felt that we were very lucky to get him...but who knew he was THAT good? I really thought he was going to be part of the "core" that DL always talks about. So that part of it really does sting.

However, once you think about it, you have to agree that we've got far too many defensive prospects, if anything. It's quite obviously a terrific trade for the Kings, and taking advantage of Col's money situation. Still, I hope to God that one of these youngsters steps up and shows equal talent to that of Quincey, cause that guy could flat-out play, in any situation, any style of game. All-in-all, you have to like the deal. I just wish we could've given up another of these prospects, rather than Q.

Let's see... Ryan Smyth for a waiver pick up (even though I really like Quincey), an overpaid Dman that became expendable and a 3rd round pick when the Kings have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds of next year's draft.

Everyone can STFU now.

wow 44 thumbs down ? There must be some bitter ave's fans or something.

Is anthony failing at using sarcasm ?

Wow, what a deal. Smythe is the epitome of what DL wants his hockey team to be like. You can't quantify or really place a value on that. And Anthony it would officially be a bad sign if this team isn't a playoff team. Smythe scored 26 goals last year on the third-worst, most low-scoring team in the NHL. He will easily score 30 w the line up this team is able to put together. Oh, and it's going to be absolutely wonderful to watch Ryan Smyth in front of the OTHER team's goalie on the powerplay. I wonder how much season seat sales are going to go up. And if there are any people who cancelled because of nothing yesterday who are suddenly wanting their tix back haha.

Scuderi + Smyth - Preissing's contract = Perfect Offseason imo

Is it time for Frozen Fury yet ?

JESUS! I've been glued to my computer for the last 3 days waiting for something to happen, and the night I decide to get drunk and play Madden 09 this happens, and I have to hear about by text from a buddy!!! DAMN!!

Anyway I am so pumped about this trade. Smyth has been a Kings killer his entire career and I was hoping so bad we got him when he signed with the Avs so now I'm extatic!!! I always had faith in you Deano! Thank you for this so much!!

And anthonny....if we make the playoffs, no one on here wants to hear your apology. It's way to late to try and jump back on the bandwagon my friend. You shouldn't have jumped off in the first place...

Quincey will be playing at a high level LONG after Smyth retires (barring any future Q back issues *crosses fingers that doesn't happen*) but we NEED scoring from the left side (all the goalies will know is that he's parked in front of them, not which side he lines up on on face-offs) and we got it from trading from a position of strength. I will miss the Q!!

This is an absolutely awesome deal.
We gave up a player we picked off the wire, dumped Priessings contract, and only gave up a fifth rounder.
We gained a huge, physical, 30 goal scorer. Quincey will be missed, and I was his biggest fan, but we are left with a playoff potential team!!!!
How many years is Smyth on board for?

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

When I heard about this trade, and it was "for two players", my heart sank and I immediately made a list of the players I was terrified it was going to be. I knew it was a salary dump so I didn't think it was any of the big boys. I was afraid of which prospects. I immediately thought: not Moller, not Simmonds, not Bernier, not Quincey.

Okay, so it was Quincey. And yes I had my heart set on Quincey's jersey being retired at Staples. But he's an RFA next year, and would have commanded 2-3MM , and so DL has saved himself that headache by signing Suderi and then taking on Smyth. The Preissing thing is genius. It basically means that next year (2010), when we would have had to pay Quincey the big bucks and would still be paying Preissing in Manchester, we basically get Ryan Smyth for free.

I love Smyth. He's great. He's older, but he's great, and he's in the patented DL mold. He and Stoll were teammates on the last very very good Edmonton team, so I suspect DL thinks he's going to energize Stoll, which is an excellent bonus.

The cap hit, as Anthony(y) said, is at 50-ish now, and will be 53-54 when Johnson and Purcell sign. That's extremely high, cap-wise.

Someone said makes things interesting for Purcell and Moller. Moller has a few games left of being waiver-exempt, and I wonder if he won't start in Manchester simply to see how he does on a line with Loktionov.

At this point, it all comes down to what DL/TM's concept for the fourth line is. I hope it's a "speed line" -- like the old Millen/Donnelly line, not a knuckle-dragging line. Probably that will be an issue all the way through camp. I know TM wanted a 4th line he could give more ice-time to, but it didn't work out last year.

To most of the world, this trade is insane. An all-star top-six forward for a guy off waivers and a $3 million minor leaguer. Oh, and the 140th pick next June. Wow.

However, I think it's smart of Colorado, really. They dump that salary. And Quincey will be at his peak in a few years, and can be the cornerstone of their defense for the following decade.

And Ryan Smyth will whip the kids into shape.

Good2BKings Author Profile Page said:

Allow me to remind you that Kyle Quincey is going to be due a significant pay raise for the 2010-2011 season. With our stable of defensive prospects, he was a valuable commodity - one that scored us Ryan Smyth and helped us dump Preissing.

Is Ryan Smyth the answer to our scoring needs? That remains to be seen, but he is certainly capable. He had 26 in Colorado without the benefit of defensemen who could get the puck to the net for his signature "dirty" goals. That won't be a problem this year. The Kings have the blueliners who will get the puck to the net where Smyth will easily collect 30+ goals.

This team is certainly shaping up to be a very difficult one to play against. Depending on how TM pairs the defense and builds the lines, there is the potential for grit, skill, and finesse with every combination. Think about Doughty or Johnson pairing with Scuderi or Greene. Think about the space that opens up for Kopitar when Smyth plants himself in front of the crease.

Damn! I can't wait to get to Vegas for FF. I am getting excited just thinking about all of the possibilities for this coming season. All we can do now is hope and pray that potential becomes execution.

I don't know... For me, the jury on this one is going to be out for a year or so. Smyth is 33 and he's got 3 years left on his deal still. That's a lot of money that we just took on for an "older" player. It would be one thing if we had him for the last few years as well or if he were younger, but we're just getting the 2nd half of deal for a guy who may be getting past his prime.

Quincey is a stud. We'll miss him unless one of our kids steps up. Didn't Lombardi just say that getting Scuderi will allow our kids to come along at a better pace? Now we need to make another move for a Dman or cancel Lombardi's previous statement.

Plus, we have that much less cap room for a shot at Kovalchuk next summer (if he's available) or other guys that are younger and/or better.

It is nice to get rid of Preissing's cap hit. If Smyth performs, then I'm sure I'll be happy, but like the Williams deal, I can see a potential upside and big potential downside in this deal.

I like it. Things are falling into place. Quincey will be a quality D-man for years to come(hate to lose him) but from what I see this does make us a better team. I hat to encourage your lunacy but I am curious... What would you have liked to see this week to make you satisfied Anthony?

mckinggolf Author Profile Page said:

This deal helps more than it hurts? Smyth's deal is lower each year after this one. which will help us sign our own guys to good deals.

Chuck Author Profile Page said:

I like the trade. Quincy will be a great D-Man for years, and I hate to lose him, but LA has a glut of good young D-Men, so he's easily replaced. We get rid of Tom Preissing's horrible contract (probably was Manchester bound), and a 5th round pick is a throw in. While Smyth isn't the same player he was in Edmonton, he's still a good LW, can put up numbers (60 points on a poor Colorado team), and fills the major team hole on LW. GREAT TRADE DL!!!!

sd said:

mckinggolf, Smyth's cap hit doesn't change over the 3 years, so it makes no difference in signing other guys, unless you're talking about some internal budget by AEG.

Just to follow up on my previous post... Don't get me wrong, I certainly like having Smyth on the team, I just really like Quincey and I'm worried that Smyth isn't going to have as much impact on the scoreboard as everyone else seems to think. I do think he'll be great in the locker room and great for the kids to learn from.

Quispie, thanx for putting in all in perspective, again....You are the deal...

sd...Yea, like Quisp I had a pretty good feeling about seeing No. 27 retired in Staples. Quincey was one of the sweetest waiver pick-ups the league has ever seen. He will be missed for sure. He was certainly consistent, no doubt.

The fact is, as Quisp put it so eloquently, the Kings were backloaded on the blue line with youth waiting in the wings. Someone was going to have to go, one of our young blueliners was on the endangered list, particularly with our need for a bonified LW. Again, the Kings had to give up someone of value to get what DL needed. On paper this is a great trade; the dumping of Preissing's salary was pure brilliant. But...I am just a tad reluctant to celebrate due to Smyth's age vs. Quincey's. We gave up youth to get scoring and a shot at the playoffs next year which everyone wants. There was a price to pay; Quincey will go on to do great things in this league for years to come. But, as Quisp said, essentially the Kings got Smyth for nothing and dumped Preissing's salary to boot.

Funny thing Quisp, when they announced the Scuderi pick-up, that's when I started scratching my head. I knew something was up and that one of our young defensemen was getting ready to leave. Does this work out for the Kings? You bet. The playoffs? A very real possibility and the Kings maintain their youth movement. However, I will miss that No. 27 in the rafters.

Thanx Kyle for giving us Kings fans hope for the future. Good luck in Colorado!

Go Kings!

Ersberg Author Profile Page said:

I think Quisp pretty much summed up what I was going to say, especially the part about hoping it wasn't any particular prospects. I was thinking it was going to be Hickey, which to my delight it was not.

How in the hell can you not like this trade?

As it has been mentioned already, no payday for Quincey, we unloaded Preissing's contract, which is pure magic, and a lousy 2010 5th. Can you say highway robbery?

So, we basically only took on $4ish+m in cap space? Kopitar will cost us more then that this season.

Lombardi is 2 for 2 so far this summer. Wow.

This was one of the guys I wanted at the deadline, and now we basically get him for nothing. Smooth move, Dean, very smooth.

JonG Author Profile Page said:

I'm disappointed at losing Quincey, but we picked up a world-class forward who leads by example.

I do think this increases the urgency for us to sign Jack Johnson. We only have two puck-moving defensemen on the roster now, so we better not lose JJ unless Hickey is ready to step in.

I'm still trying to figure out the Smyth-Philly connection though.
