Batten down the hatches, folks...

We start off mainly on the road, 6-game roadtrip and 8 of 10 on the road... and hit the Big Apple EARLY.

Big Apple+High expectations for the season=Where the rubber meets the road for 2009-2010.

N.Y. in October, Florida in November, Western Conference in December. Home-Road is 17-24... Didn't we do that last year to end the season?

We need to be AT LEAST 3-5 games over .500 by the Winter Classic to have good position for a playoff run.

Say, 18-15-8...

This schedule seems a lot more balanced than last years. last year we had so many home games in the begining of the year & barely any during the end. Plus it will be nice to see the Penguins, Bruins & Canadians.

stang Author Profile Page said:

The biggest road trip is 6 games in early October then two trips of 5 and one with 4.

The biggest home stand is 7 games and nothing more than 4 after that.

Looks like AEG listened to DL about taking care of his team unlike years before.

Matt R Author Profile Page said:

Granted we have a 7 game home stand in January, but this schedule feels a little road heavy to me. Aside from the 7 game, there is one 4 game home stand and the rest are three or less.

For road trips, there is a six game, two fives and a four.

If you count number of home/road games played on stints longer than four games, it's 11 home games and 20 road games. Ouch!

The first two months looks pretty awful! December doesn't look that great either. Well, I guess we'll have a pretty good idea early on how the team is going to look with all those road games. It'll be interesting to see how the fare on that six game trip after only three game into the season!

I'm all over that Dec 3rd Sens game, so I can laugh at Heatley. I think I'll hit the Jan 2nd Caps game as well.

IT looks like we get the two nasty eastern swings over early. Probably a good thing in multiple ways. They get to take out the tough travel early and they also get that whole "team bonding" thing going early as well.

gralx Author Profile Page said:

The other side... for those who choose to complain. They don't leave southern cali the entire month of february. And, last year we were so over loaded with home games at the start of the year, they ran out of gas with all the road trips at the end of the year. This is a much, much better schedule than last years.

Hearing anything about JJ signing a two-year extension?

DAkings20 said:

Yeah Rich any update on Jack? A signing announcement is supposedly coming later?

AEG rulez Author Profile Page said:

Hard to figure the reasoning behind the 8-day Xmas break....the extra 5-in-8s and 6-in-10s mean more injury risk.

OTOH, everyone gets to plan out a long vacation with their families/significant others....a sensible tradeoff for a team that usually is out of contention by that time.

Never mind. DL is a genius!

Dave in Torrance Author Profile Page said:

I like it, put my 10 game flex pack request in already. Pens, Bruins, Caps, and as many of the Sucks as I could fit. "Ducks Suck" best chant ever. I'm stoked and ready, lets drop the puck already.

Dave said:

The schedule is very road heavy! The only good thing is they don't play too many back to back games like in years past when they went back east.

It will be interesting to see how many teams play Anaheim, Phoenix or SJ the night before. If memory serves they did very well last year against teams who did.

4thlinechecker Author Profile Page said:

Great schedule! Start at home, long roadie early in the season while hopefully nobody is really banged up, and get to do some team building..... couple 3 game homestands with just an anaheim or sj road trip in between..... Far better then last year.

Paul from Oxnard said:

The fact that the Kings don't play their final 35 games on the road like last year makes this a much better schedule. :D We get our tough east coast trips done early. We should know by the Olympic break where the team really stands as far as playoff hopes.

Paul from Oxnard said:

The break in February is for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Brian said:

The thing that worries me MOST are all the 1:00 PM and 12:00 Noon games at home. Looks like basketball got the night priority on weekends at Staples. Can someone look up our Staples Day Game record the last 2 years or so? Seems to me we don't play well then (guys are still sleepy). Hopefully they can get used to it!

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

All Star Break = Olympics, doesn't it?

Quispie-

Do you favor early road trips or late road trips? Early on, seems to me, everyone is feeling themselves out as a team. Later on, the games mean more for everyone... they get harder to win, it's harder to get a win streak going.

What do you think? What do your famous stats say?

Quisp Author Profile Page said:

I just like road trips in general. Especially for young teams. They bond. Their bodies can take the grind. They're away from the home fans and the pressure.

The Kings were very good on the road through February 10, last season. They were 11-10-1 up to that point. (only 5 times in the last 30 seasons have they been above .500 on the road thru February 10 -- only once in the Gretzky era) Then they went 5-12-2 down the stretch.

You could argue that the wheels fell off a young team, maybe not used to such a long schedule. I personally think it was failing to play Moller when he came back from injury (but that's just me). Certainly, that bad streak on the road, when it counted, would have me worried next time we get to the stretch run (whether home or away).

If I had to pick the ideal place for a long road trip, I guess I would want it early, so the team could work out its bugs on the road, away from prying eyes and expectations.

i think its funny when people say the schedule is road heavy. when i count, there are 41 home games and 41 road games. seems balanced to me.

the tougher of the road trips are earlier in the season this time around. this allows a younger team to bond as a group together without the distractions of family and friends hounding them.

the kings don't even leave l.a. the entire month of february. and, they only leave l.a. for one game in april. i'd say this is potentially a great schedule for the boys. i'm not going to debate about the players that will be leaving socal for the olympics.

well fellow 329'ers, its time to plan a roadie!

go kings!!!

I just wanted to leave a comment for Rich, I was going through all the other blog sites that you have listed for other teams. Nothing comes close to what you do, your writing style is something special. All the interviews with the players and coaches are incredible. No one else has this in depth analysis of any situation that is evolving around the team. I don't know what I would do without this site. Great job, your very dedicated to what you do just like all of the Kings fans are. The passion just burns within! Thank You

Wow I get to see a game live this year! what a treat!

Pumpernicholl Author Profile Page said:

I don't understand the complaining about this schedule. It's the best one the Kings have had in years, the most balanced one compared to recent years, truly.

If you would rather go back again and see the Kings have only like 12 home games out of their final 40 games, be my guest.

I prefer what I'm looking at this year what the Kings dealt with at least the last 3, maybe 4 years schedule-wise. Without question.

Quisp is right, early road trips for young teams are best.

There are also no back to back HOME/AWAY series, why?

Interesting to have a long road trip early, who will have their 10 games with the big club end with that trip?

Eric K Author Profile Page said:

Reasonably fair schedule overall, especially compared to other teams.

According to Matthew Barry from Hockeybuzz.com (Ya, I know, laugh all you want, but this guy does have good resources), Jack Johnson's signing will be announced tomorrow..

AK re Barry:

Matthew Barry is great and reliable. He's not Eklund. Everyone should read him. He's a real Kings fan and gets real interviews (Lombardi, players, etc.). He's second to Rich in my book, for Kings coverage.

Bob said:

Great AND Reliable? Geez..really?? I can't remember a rumor yet that has come true from that guy, but maybe he's your buddy or something. Does he dance great too?

Paul from Oxnard said:

The fact that Matthew Barry blogs on hockeybuzz pretty much disqualifies him as a "reliable" source. I'll wait till a reporter like Rich writes the story. Until then it's just rumor.

And Derek Armstrong is an unrestricted free agent. I'll be surprised if he gets signed by an NHL team, unless it's to play in the AHL. MAYBE a building team who needs a good locker room guy could use him, like the Isles or Tampa Bay.

OrlandoFan said:

flakingsfan, I am going to try to go to both, but because of work and school I can only say for sure that Ill be at the Tampa Bay game. Ill be wearing my White Kings Jersey, and sporting my Kings hat at both games. Hope to see you there!

He still thinks Eric Lindros will be a King.

Even with the vets we brought in this year, I'd still like to see Army re-signed. He'd be great in the "Klemm" role

Paul from Oxnard said:

With all due respect, Derek Armstrong would have to pay me to get me to waste a roster spot on him. He may be great in the locker room, but the Kings need to move past retreads like him.

mrbrett7 Author Profile Page said:

I agree NYK...I just don't know if there is going to be room for him.

I've always been a fan of Army, if for no other reason than he gives everything he has every shift, every game. It's not his fault that he just isn't that good.

54FIGHTING Author Profile Page said:

No way Army is coming back. He requested a trade at the deadline last year and DL couldn't move him. He hasn't signed with anyone yet and most likely won't. We now have Justin Williams, Rob Scuderi and Ryan Smyth to fill the leadership roles. We don't need a 'good guy' to ride the pine, bring up a young kid and let me fight for a spot.

Back to the schedule, I like that we aren't the opening opponent for anyone this year. Several other teams are the 'away' team for the home opener and I hate that long wait for the game to start for them to do introductions and all that other fluff. I think the Habs and Colorado do it three times each.
