Smyth trade details II
The trade is contingent upon all player passing physical exams, which is typically a formality but can be an issue every now and then.
I'm expecting to talk to Dean Lombardi tonight and Ryan Smyth tomorrow.

We basically get Smith for a cap hit of 3.5M for Quincey a player we got for free and who just had back surgery. I hope Smith is healthy. It took him a while to get back when Matty broken his arm. If he is good to go them it is a great deal.
Guys, we're in for a salary cap crunch.
After dumping Preissings and Quinceys contract, our cap hit is about $50,300,000. Approximately.
And we haven't even signed Frolov and JJ.
Can somebody else, like QUISP, do the math if I'm wrong here.
Guys I don't like this trade. Quincey was an awesome D-Man who had a lot of potential. At 23, he's gonna thrive in Colorado. Preiising was a good dump though. I will admit that.
But no way a 33 year, scoring only 26 goals is worth $6.25 Million. Not in a million years. This player is in his decline.
anthony, there's this thing called the bonus cushion. we have 10M in cap space after this deal.
And what the hell is a cap cushion.
If you add Smyth's contract and deduct Quincey's and Preissings contract, we're at around $50,300.000.
I just looked it up under "hockeybuzz"
If I'm wrong, somebody correct me.
Still don't like the idea of paying a 33 year old player over $6 Mil for 26 goals.
Love this trade (even though Quincey will be GREATLY missed). Now I'm just praying that Preissing passes the physical. Do they test for vertigo? I think Smith is going to be a great addition.
And Frolov is SIGNED for 2009-2010.
Hbuzz has us at 46.1 add 3.0 [for smith (6.25) minus Pressing and Q (~3.25)] and you get 49.1M. Add 3M for JJ. So that is 52.1M
Anthonyy -- we got a 26 goal scorer for 3M, and he has heart. Where else are you going to find that? And he is not from Philly.
I do heve one relevant question.
Is the rebuiding thing officially over?
A fair question.
As a Kings fan who lives outside Denver, this trade is just STUNNING. Smyth will set up in a spot that has been empty for the past five years in L.A. -- smack dab in front of the net.
Not only does Smyth score a ton of ugly goals, he will also be a huge obstacle for any goalie to see around -- and that opens up lots of holes for the Kings snipers.
INCREDIBLE TRADE.
tomain -- how are the Aves goig to play next year without Lappy and Smith? Sounds like they will be in a race with Burke for the first pick?
Anyway, thanks for the insight.
tomaindenver--
You are SO right! One critical role that went unfilled on this team is exactly what Smyth does naturally--incite the goalie and the defense plus score tip-in goals. But the additional factor is how Smyth stirs up the opposition, very much like Avery does. Gets them off their game, changes the game's flow. I remember at least four games over the last 3-4 years where Smyth determined the outcome. He is a game-changer.
Now, where are Quispie and Variable to tell us the statistical truths here? Q and V, we need you!
If only we can get that left wing now...
I won't be getting much sleep tonight...
Re: Anthonyy (sic), "Is the rebuiding (sic) thing officially over?"
No, it is never over. In this new age of salary caps, constant rebuilding is a new reality we must deal with.
A GM has the task of building his team for next season as well as the team he wants 5 years down the road. If you can not handle juggling multiple theories at the same time you are going to be lost.
You are welcome.
This is an awesome swap! And Anthonyy; no, this is not the end of the rebuild. This is progress in the right direction, so don't count this move as a run for the cup.
"anthonyy said:

I hope it's NEVER over. At least as long as we have a salary cap. A GM MUST be looking towards the future at all times.
Jet:
Avs are going to be terrible this year, maybe for the next couple of years. Gives them a chance to play the young kids.
Avs owner, Stan Kroenke, also owns the Nuggets. When the Avalanche was great, he skimped on the Nuggets; now it appears to be the other way around.
Can't think of another team that has fared as poorly as the Avalanche in the "new NHL." When money was no object, they were great. Not any more.
