Bonecrusher Teubert
Kings defensive prospect Colten Teubert made a big impact during a scrimmage Saturday at the tryout camp for Canada's world junior team. Teubert delivered an open-ice hit to Jordan Caron, the Boston Bruins' first-round pick, broke Caron's collarbone and sent him to the hospital.
And this is what Teubert does to guys who are on his side...

Nice hit, perfect timing made the hit just as the puck gets there, and keep his feet on the ice until after the hit. Dude has got some power
Com'on Colton, at least try to show a little remorse; fake it if you have to. "Sucks for him" is a bit too cavalier, especially for injuring someone that was going to potentially play with you for your country.
This kid is looking more and more like a young Scott Stevens. He may not have the offensive upside that SS had but he's definitely got the meanstreak. I'll take it.
That's the kind of guy I want on my team....
I'm not too sure about why he should show/fake sympathy just because the guy's also trying out for the Canadian Junior team. Hockey's hockey..and if you get a chance to lay a guy out, you take it. They're not teammates...both are trying to make the team.
I sure as hell don't want him easing up on one of the Ducks coming thru the middle when he gets to the NHL...just because they're from the same country or were former teammates.
"sucks for him" is exactly what should have been said.
This is hockey...not the chess club or the PGA tour.
This kid scares me.....I LIKE that!
fyzix -- He also said "but, I hope he has a fast recovery". I am not trying to hammer you, but what words would you use?
Wow.
Nice hit.
Shades of Scott Stevens indeed.
Clean, hard, and most importantly the right timing. He didn't risk an odd man rush at all on that play. Excellent hit. A veteran kind of move.
The new Scott Stevens?...hmmm that'd be nice next to DD (A.K.A. the next Ray Bourque)
One Day...
DD/Teubert
JJ/Scuderi
Hickey/Drewiske
I don't care what he does at a tryout camp. He tried to play that way in the ECHL and guys easily sidestepped him. Scott Stevens??? Please!!! Mr. Teubert is a devensive liability at this point in his development. Mean streak? Yes! Out of position regularly? Far too often. He has a lot to learn about positional defense. I hope he plays another year in junior and two more after that in Manchester. After seeing him play for the Ontario Reign at the end of last season, I am none to thrilled to see him in a Kings uniform anytime soon.
"sucks for him"... Good Lord, I think we've got something special working here. A defender that will give the other team something to think about when they go to rough up our skill guys. a "clean" hit too...
I think the approrpriate response would be.....dag-gum... what a hit. Next Scott Stevens might be a bit presumptuous, but mercy, what a hit.
I can see DL's smile from up here in Vancouver.
Also noticed Martin Jones making a couple nice saves. I really hope he finds his way onto the team.
If you're 19, tryouts for Team Canada junior squad is the Stanley Cup playoffs. Practices are games. I don't think he was being a d**k in his comments (although he certainly wasn't doing the usual pro-athlete canned boring response thing). It was a clean hit. Caron needs to keep his head up, not to mention knowing who's lining up opposite you.
Good2bKings -
And he may well follow that path, one more year of juniors and two in the AHL. at least he'll do the one more year of juniors. I would put my money on him being a call-up from Manchester the season after this up-coming one. I agree with you that he'll need at least some amount of time adjusting to the speed and strength of grown-ups (i.e. in the AHL).
Obviously, the whole point of getting hiim into those ECHL games is for everyone to see what he needs to work on. If he's not ready now, he's not ready, that's not a mark against him, really. He's not going to reach his full bone-crunching potential for another four or five years anyway. And whether or not he does his homework and works on what he needs to work on will come down to his character, fortitude, resilience, etc., all those things DL in theory has already seen in him ... otherwise why trade up to get him.
What's going to be extremely interesting is: (1) how he does at the WJCs this year and (2) how he does when he's called up to Manchester at the conclusion of his junior season. That, especially, will give us a really good sense of his development, in comparison to his underwhelming performance in the ECHL this past year.
geeezzz...
it's awesome to see...not only just hear...colt's intensity and grit...
however...
eh, ummmmm...
he did leave his feet...(!)
i've watched it now about 8 times...and he gets off the ground just before impact...
am i complaining...???....no...not really...
but i would completely understand if jordan caron takes a lil' umbrage w/the mighty colt...it does teach jordan to keep his head up at all times...especially if mighty colt is on the ice...i guess it was a rather painful...and costly lesson for the kid to learn...
maybe we should deploy colten in afghanistan...?!?!?
i'm just sayin'...
canadianking re jones --
One spectacular save in there, the toe save. I'm with you on Jones. He's amazing.
I just went and looked again at the video. Teubert's tone is much more sympathetic than the words on paper "sucks for him." I think he really is just calling it like he sees it, which is great for me bad for him hopefully he bounces back we've all got jobs to do.
It's also good to know that when a butthole like Artukyn thinks about taking a run at our guys, we'll have a guy like Teubert there to make sure it doesn't happen.
Its hard to truly judge a guy playing in a handful of games after being promoted. Nerves could have played a part in him looking lost.
You don't get drafted in the 1st round unless you have talent...except for Tukonen!
This kid is an enormous asset to the organization. That hit just reinforces his value as a monster hitter. Regardless of whether he develops offensive talent or becomes a shut down defenseman he will always find work in the NHL with hits like that. Dean should give himself a big pat on the back today.
Good2BKings -
We played an entire season with Denis Gauthier didnt we? I mean come on, given what the Kings have put on the ice in the last five years, the last thing you have to complain about is a guy with a "defensive liability". TM's defense first system, the excellent coaching of Mark Hardy, and the veteran presence of SOD and Scuderi will help Teubert adapt to the NHL game. Any guy that takes a run like that will be out of position sometimes. There are guys in the NHL who are so fast and skilled that they can evade those hits. BUT when a hit like that is landed, the entire momentum of the game changes. To me, a monster hit is the same a clutch goal.
I welcome with open arms a guy like that. A guy the Kings havent had on the team since the first version of Rob Blake. (I still miss him sticking his rear out and crushing people even though he skipped town). Best of luck to Colten and I hope to see him laying out Ducks in the near future!
I just hope he doesn't turn into the dick that is Chris Pronger.
EJ -
I enjoy hating Chris Pronger as much as the next guy, but we should be so lucky.
Would have to concur with those who saw Teubert play in the ECHL for the Reign. Saw him play the Bakersfield Condors at the end of the regular season in a series of games. Teubert is a raw talent who needs to learn his craft--read, learn positioning. The skill aspect of the game is there for him as the big stay at home defenseman, but he was beaten easily and had real problems making the first pass. Those things can be coached, and he looks coachable. Hesitancy kills as a defenseman. I think he will lose that, with time.
He is 2-3 years away, at minimum, in my humble opinion.
I'll take our own version of Pronger.
Hopefully he'll turn out to be a potential HOF'er like Pronger.
There's no doubt I always love seeing a future King get the better part of a big hit, but we should just think about what our reaction would've been if the roles were reversed and Colton got clocked.
The reality is that CT saw an opening for a hit and stepped into it in a matter of 2 seconds...there really is no such thing as a "not-so-hard" hit in that position. Either he hits him or he doesn't.
So I have no issue with the hit, it's just that remember we'd be pi$$ed if we saw a valuable asset of ours nailed. The reality is that given his place on the depth charts a 6-8 weeks recovery wouldn't have meant CT was losing playing time at the big club...and let's be honest, people break bones playing hockey... but most of us would say it was an inappropriate hit.
shakes -
upset, maybe, but not pissed. it wasn't a cheap shot.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Colton on the Kings and it was a good hit. But how ticked off must the Bruins and their fans be? You can expect payback when the Kings play Boston if Colton is on the team.
Can he take a hit as well? If he tries that in an NHL game people are going to run at him too.
Shakes -- It sounded like the instructions from the coach were pretty clear. The scrimmages must be competitive. The coach even set up the camp so that there would be an antagonistic atmosphere between the two squads. The coach sets the tone. We can not blame Teu for doing what the coach asked of him. The hit was clean. The only possible issue is that teu has immunity (from retaliation).
Good2BKing -- your points are valid, except for the speed or lack thereof. He definitely needs some more coaching. Do you think he would receive better coaching with the Kings or with Regina?
Good2BKing -- I just reread your comment. You did not mention speed. So, I apologize and retract. Still, while I agree with your evaluation, I do not agree with your conclusion.

NO WE WOULDN'T
wow, just heard Patrick Kane was arrested for felony robbery, kind of odd.
Jesus, I didn't have to watch that 8 times to know that he was jumping out of his skates to make that hit. Dirty hit. Uncalled for in that type of a scrimmage. I'm hoping he can do some similar damage to some of the marginal forwards the Kings have no use for come training camp. LOL.
Not surprised to hear that Teubert put someone in the hospital. The guy is a beast and the fact that we have him and Doughty makes me thrilled about our future on defense. Hey Rich, I know its only hockeybuzz and their rumors are usually BS, but they have had numerous blogs about a potential Frolov to Montreal trade. Can you add any light to that topic? Thanks
ZIGGY33...
first rule of rumors...:
always...with no exceptions and with extreme prejudice...dismiss anything hockeybuzz...and in particular...eklund...says about any forthcoming trade involving the kings...
that site has had frolov going to all 29 other teams on numerous occasions...they cannot be trusted...
and don't get me started on that teenage idiot, eklund...(!)
marc nathan re hit:
I respectfully disagree. I don't see him leaving his feet or making contact with an elbow or anything of the kind. it's simply a devastating, clean open-ice hit, in the playoff atmosphere of a team canada "evaluation" try-out. Caron should have listened to his pee-wee coach and kept his head up. Nice suicide pass from whoever that was, too.
...whoever made that pass to Caron should be hung by his toes
suicide pass - Zack Kassian - 13th overall 2009 Buffalo Sabres
http://watch.tsn.ca/international-hockey/clip201593#clip201761
Nice hit!!!!
Ooh. I love Kassian. He must feel horrible. He's really pretty great. It occurs to me that it's a pretty effective way to eliminate your competition. (I make joke)
I posted the video on another forum and everyone is taking hate on Teubert saying "why would he hit him? they're both on team canada that's just sad to see."
Glad someone finally mentioned the passer. On a hit like that, it's not so much the kid keeping his head up as it is being set up by a teammate. They call it a suicide pass for a reason. (I'm not saying it was intentional so don't jump all over me! :-)
Great hit. Whether he is called up late this year or spends a couple more years in Manchester, it's just something all big hitters go through. They have to learn how and when to do something like that and they only learn by making mistakes. It's just a matter if they learn or not.
Blake went through it when he was young. But he learned and found the right time/place. Gauthier never learned it and that's why he has been barely hanging on in the NHL the last couple years. (not to mention he sucked at big hits too, but I'm biased)
Let's hope he learns it and learns it well. I think he will.
Oh...forgot to give mad props to Caron for popping right back up after the hit. Sure he ended up in the hospital but wouldn't have known it from the highlight.
Marc nathan – Consider Desjardins' point of emphasis for this camp was to have physical play. If you tell a 19 year old physical player that you want him to be physical in the scrimmages, then you should be prepared to have some tough hits. This was exactly what the coach asked of him.
I also respectfully disagree that it was a dirty hit. His skates were on the ice. He even bent his knees to spring out at contact to maximize acceleration and the force of the impact. Was it a nasty hit? absolutely Was it a dirty hit? No, it was within legal boundaries (although he did get a free ride, with no threat of being challenged). Was it a cheap shot? Normally yes, but not given his coach's instructions for these scrimmages. Final, thought Caron is a really big guy. It is highly doubtful that Teubert thought he could ever seriously hurt this guy.
tubie went all kane on him. maybe caron short changed him 20 cents.
jet -
that's a good point. caron is I believean inch shorter but 10-20 pounds heavier than Teubert.
Let's sic him on Zeiler in practice.
I'd like to see Teubert play like Pronger without the suspensions and stepping on people with his skates... Good thing Pronger is out east now and we don't have to play against him anymore.
http://watch.tsn.ca/international-hockey/clip201593#clip201761
Cant wait to see him do that to all 23 players on the Ducks. What the hell let him do it to their fans to.

Quisp, I agree with wanting Teubert to have the defensive skills of a Chris Pronger. However, when I say "dick", I mean the guy who stomps on players with his skates, takes ill-timed roughing penalties, and even worse, delivers head-shots in the playoffs and gets suspended. Would love to have Teubert play this kind of physical hockey (hit on Caron) without getting suspended eight times in his career.
Mudfish
What mistakes did Teubert make when he made that hit?
I've looked at it numerous times, and there doesn't appear to be anything illegal about the hit.
These guys are at a tryout camp to make the Canadian Junior team. You aren't a teammate until both guys make the team.
If Teubert starts easing up on hits...2 things are going to happen:
1) He jeopardizes his chances of making the team.
2) He begins to form bad habits that might not be so easy to break.
Rob Blake did everything he possibly could to make a team when he began his NHL career...that meant taking guys out who may become his teammates. When he became a veteran he didn't have to tryout for the team..therefore, he didn't have to lay out guys during camp.
There was no mistake on the hit that Teubert made...the only mistakes were a lousy pass and the player not keeping his head up.
Sucks for him!
Shows a lack of maturity leaving your feet to blast a player in a inter squad scrimmage.
Kingsfan21 - The coach told the teams to play at full speed and that he wanted to see physical play. Would he not be immature not to follow his coach's directive?
