Roenick retires
In honor of Jeremy Roenick's retirement, let's all take a moment and share memories of Roenick's best moments with the Kings.
OK, that should take care of it.

I just read an article by Burnside (always a laugh at how ignorant he is) which says that Roenick openly stated that he tanked his season with the Kings to spite the NHL for the lockout. Really? Did Roenick actually say and do this? Because I thought he just flat out sucked for us and was one of the worst signings in recent years!
LMAO.. The dancing was funny. But,
"In honor of Jeremy Roenick's retirement, let's all take a moment and share memories of Roenick's best moments with the Kings.".... "OK, that should take care of it."
Ha! That made me laugh out loud at my desk at work. Nice post Rich. JR was a good player, but not when he laced up for the Kings. At least he has the honor of being the best hockey player in a video game distinction going for him. He'll make a great t.v. commentator too. Good luck JR... just keep away from the Kings.
Nice!!!Hilarious actually!
There's no doubt that JR was an entertainer. Unfortunately, due to his sub-par play, he just looks like a buffoon in this video.
No doubt JR was a great player in his day but showing up to camp out of shape and being dreadful in every game but one (the season opener against Phoenix) leaves me very sour on him.
Thanks for the vid, Rich. That was good for a laugh.
Dude was a severe dissapointment here but man could he play when he was in Chicago. Jeremy might have sucked here but he was a BEAST back in the day.
Another great player goes to the retirement bin. Man I'm starting to feel old when the guys that were my age back in their prime are now retiring *cry*.
JR was a great player...his actions off the ice (and on in this case) overshadow one of the greatest careers for an American born player in NHL history.
As far as I'm concerned, he still owes the Kings franchise his salary for that season.
But, lest we all forget...thanks to JR, we got AM fired, and DT fired, as well as Lie-weekly out of the front office. In hindsight...it worked out pretty well.
I understand and agree with the assessment of JR as a King ... sad and disappointing. But as a hockey fan growing up watching him as a Blackhawk and a Flyer as well as a member of the USA teams, I cannot help but admire his career "as a whole," and appreciate what he has done for hockey in the US. Yes, he is a loose cannon and can't have enough feet to stick in his ever-moving mouth, but more often than not, he played the game hard, competed at an elevated level and had some great years. As a King's fan, I wish he would have done more, but as a hockey fan, I thank him for his years as a great player.
I only cared about JR when he was a King..He may have been a great player elsewhere, but I couldn't stand him. He comes to the Kings and I hate him even more.
The Kings should have sued him for the salary they paid him.
I have no respect for the guy and wish him all the worst.
What he did by not showing up in shape and "tanking"..to me that should be the defining memory of his career....a worthless, un-professional piece of human garbage.
He owes every fan who ever paid a nickel to go see him with the Kings a refund.
The NHL is a better league without him.
We were at the game sitting right near the corner where he started his moves, it was hilarious! (about as funny as the utterly confused staff at the arena trying to figure out how to replace the glass)
We just came off the lockout and Roenick seemed to be doing everything he could to "win-back" the fans.
He even spent about 5-10 min. throwing pucks into the stands after warm-ups. And not just the fans behind the glass. He was chucking them all the way up into the cheap seats! He even broke a cover on one of the lights by accident!
I give him props for that. Too bad that WAS the highlight of his Kings career.
Great post Rich. I shot Mt. Dew out my nose laughing so hard at the way you wrote it. Awesome.
Hey, at least we got Zatkoff (if I recall) for taking him off the Flyers hands.
I am one of the few that just can't hate this guy. I love that video because everyone in that whole building, even the players are referees were just stopped in their tracks watching this spectacle. lol. I love the guy on and off the ice, just hilarious. It sucks how it went down here in LA, we ended up being a vacation spot for him, but overall he led one hell of a career and he is one hell of a guy.
Another youtube video that features Roenick's moves and a few others. Video quality kinda sucks but it's pretty funny...esp with the Sedin's at the end.
well...
i would like to thank mr. roenick for the following things...:
1. for being one of the best american-born players to have played the game...except for when he was a king...yuck...!
2. for being one of the best soundbites the league has ever had...
3. for being the impetus for one of the greatest quotes (roy's special ear plugs) ever by a player in any sport...
4. for the countless excuses he has made over the years for his sub-standard play at times...jeremy...you could have just said "it was bad chinese food"...that's my favorite one to use when calling out sick...
5. for being a card-carrying member of the mullet club...heck, i'll nominate you for the mullet hall of fame, if needed...
6. for being warm, gracious and funny with all the fans you've come in contact with...
7. for not taking crap from anyone...player, press and/or management - no one was off-limits...
8. for representing our country on several olympic teams...
9. for being a partier, yet not landing in the clink or being a law enforcement poster child, unlike several other popular infamous sports figures whom have been not as lucky to stay out of significant trouble while sounding off...
10. for jeremy being jeremy...
enjoy yr retirement and i look forward to seeing you on t.v/in films in some capacity in the near future...
He makes me sick, he did that stupid dance after they were eliminated from the playoffs. He was the sole reason that I wanted the sharks eliminated from the playoffs. Good ridance looser.
That was a 5 million dollar dance.
I still say he owes the franchise $4.5 million for playing worse than he did for a lot less than that with the Sharks.
Oh well, he made Luc happy in his last season...
Never liked this guy even when LA signed him. Of course like many of you I hated him even more after he took the organization for a ride.
If there was a picture alongside the word "overrated" it would be his. Hopefully he doesn't pull a Claude Lemieux and make a comeback later.
I'll will give him credit when he played for the Hawks, he was a pest and scored goals. He'll have enough numbers to get into the hall.
The one memorable Roenick moment was when Derrian Hatcher went off his feet and attempted to re-arrange Roenick's face. He almost succeeded.
He was a goof with the kings. But previously he impressed by playing the playoffs with a broken jaw.
The one thing everyone left out was the fact that JR was one of the most dominating players ever in the history of hockey...according to the world of the video game NHL '95....perhaps very close to the legendary Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl.
It's too bad Patrick Roy couldn't hear his retirement announcement.
That is pretty damn funny Rich.
Hope your vacation was great!
Roenick, goodbye is too good a word babe, so I'll just say fare thee well.
Re:waxieman
Dude...this dance was during a pre-season game in Vegas. It was the first game after the lockout season.
Roenick can go fornicate himself for the lack of effort he gave Kings fans. The good games he had after he left the Kings are just an additional kick in the cajones.

Good one Rich.
And F.U.J.R.
I like the show Leverage, but when I saw him as a security guard I cringed.
Thanks, JR, way to wreck another of my favorite things to watch, this time with your sub-par acting.
Wow.
All you douchebags who are flipping JR the bird should be ashamed of yourself.
Do you honestly believe he "tanked" the season, as a King? Come on. Think about that for a moment, realistically; you'll realize it's absolute nonsense. He made one comment about it, admitted it was a stupid lack of judgment on his part, and the fact is that he simply played poorly for us. That's it. Sit in a bar and discuss it with him, and you'll find that he feels terribly about the time he spent here, and the fact that he couldn't do more to help us win.
Those of you saying 'F JR' and the like: F YOU. Grow a brain, for chrissake. The guy had one of the all-time great careers, and will certainly be a first-ballot HoF'er. He had a bad year here -- perhaps made more than one mistake, his first coming in out-of-shape -- but is that a reason to wish him ill? If any of you could actually speak to him, you'd feel like complete idiots. In the history of the NHL, he'd probably win the Best Guy to Have a Beer With Award. Grow up, you freaks.
Rich, you should be ashamed, as well. Fine, be funny, that's great; but this video should be side-by-side with a twenty-minute highlight video of all the terrific goals/hits/fights/plays this guy made & took part in, during his incredible career. To me, it just shows a complete lack of respect. But that's me, this is Rich's Place, and I understand that (and would have it no other way). Would simply be nice to show the guy some love, cause he certainly deserves it.
Good luck, JR. Sorry about your time in L.A., but we realize it wasn't just you, brother -- the entire team blew goats that year (and a half, or whatever). Great guy, great player, we wish you the best in retirement and appreciate all you gave to the NHL. Those of us Kings fans with half a brain, anyway.
Tweener, I definetely remember comments he made that were indicative of his bitterness regarding what he felt he deserved and was not getting post lockout.
I don't think there is one single reader here not willing to tip their hat to his carreer in whole, but this is a Kings related site and you come off as comical when you mention J.R.and respect in the same sentence.
He mailed in the season and laughed all the way to the bank and actually justified his actions.
Tweener this is a KINGS site the last time I checked. If Cloutier, McCauley, Nagy and Bure had great/ok careers elsewhere would you still give them credit too?
tweener..Either you're JR or you got some manlove for this guy.(Joke)
"Best guy to have a beer with award"? Oh please!
Most of us don't know him and most of us really don't care to know him. He's being judged here on his peformance with the Kings.
The majortity of people who come to this site are KINGS FANS....not JR fans who will forgive him for his "I don't give a shit" attitude while with the Kings. Go tell the people who bought tickets that he's a good guy...don't worry about the fact that he showed no respect for the fans or the game by "tanking it". JR was supposed to be a professional athlete...that means you come into camp in top shape and perform to the best of your abilities. He did neither...therefore he was completely un-professional. The guy at one point blamed his skates for his pathetic performance..
Why should I care how well he played for Chicago...I'm a Kings fan. I care only about how he played for the team I root for...and he played like complete horseshit!
Tweener, there are endless articles and sites and hell, even TV coverage, just gushing about JR. There is no shortage of praise for him this week. God forbid one or two sites buck the trend.
Everyone run over and check out Gann Matsuda's article on JR's one 'black mark': http://frozenroyalty.net/2009/08/07/jeremy-roenick-one-black-mark-on-an-otherwise-stellar-career/
RE. Mudfish 4
I know that was a preseason game my point was he did that same stupid dance after a game against the Ducks at staples when they were eliminated from the playoffs. He never cared when he was with the Kings.
I know I'm so late no one may read this, but THN had a great quote from JR.
"I'm watching these guys in awe and Gordie Howe picked up a whole bunch of snow on his stick and dumped it on my head. I thought that was the coolest thing that ever happened. Then he skated around and he looked at me again and he winked. For those three seconds, it was me and Gordie Howe and nobody else. It was little, it was small, it took nothing out of his time, but it resonated my whole life. So as a player, as I got older, I tried to reach out to fans, to reach out to kids."
- Jeremy Roenick, on an encounter with Gordie Howe in Hartford when Roenick was seven years old.
Gotta love that personality in such an uptight(though classy, which is what matters) league.
It looks like at lot of hockey fans are in love with this guy.
Ditto the same sentiments articulated above. His piss poor attitude, dreadful play, and greed say a lot about his character. The fact that he played better in other venues says even more--he did not do what he was capable of.
Like many other fans, I am bitter at this guy. He deserves every bit of rancor Kings fans have towrds him...
Not a JR fan...never will be. Blaming his skates when he came to camp out of shape and overwieght. What a deuche bag! I am so glad San Jose blew chunks as usual. NO CUP FOR YOU JR!
