We’re in big trouble if we’re starting the season with Harrold centering that 4th line.

  • Chuck

I’m really shocked about Martinez making the team over Hickey. I guess the fact that he has a year of pro experience in the AHL, must have played a part in the decision.

Westgarth gets the enforcer spot next year, after Ivanans contract expires, not a big suprise here.

Bernier to the minors is a smart move. A) he gets #1 goalie minutes, B) Ersberg would have had to clear waivers, and is a cheap option $750k, for any team looking for a backup.

  • jet

Pretty much as expected. Hopefully, these guys can get some playoff experience in Manchester this season. I also hope Martinez gets at least 30 games to further his development.

It’s better than last year. BTW (this is off topic), when do the Kings normally announce the promotional schedule, you know the giveaway nights. I need to reserve the Ivanans bobble brick head giveaway night.

  • Irish Pat

Nice breakdown Waves, but I do hope Trevor Lewis cracks the opening night roster. On paper (or screen) this team looks pretty darn good. Very young on the back end, but pretty darn good.

  • iansez

Hickey got stuck on attack and hung Martinez out to dry horribly @ the game last night and it resulted in a Duck goal, I wonder if that sealed his fate…/
I thought Bernier looked much better than Ersberg too, perhaps the Kings are doing a little “character check” by sending him down and seeing how he responds.

  • Chris

Don’t forget the waiver draft is in the next couple days. We could dump someone there or gain someone there.

  • deadcatbounce

cfbuckster said: when do the Kings normally announce the promotional schedule, you know the giveaway nights.

Didnt the Kings give away enough games last season??? :-)

  • jet

Ersburg — with 5 minutes a game, do you really think Harold is going to lose games for us?

  • Timoteo

Here’s hoping Murray has figured out that there are games against teams w/out goons where Ivanans shouldn’t be on the bench, much less the ice.

We’ve got 3 pretty decent lines, it looks like more offense from the forwards than last year (addition of Smyth assumed upgrade of Williams over POS, improvement of younger players) and probably more offense from Doughty and Johnson as well with more experience. Also no Labs between the pipes so I think it’s safe to say we should have better ‘tending too. So with any luck and if we maintain the commitment to D we’ll be higher in the standings and have a good shot at making it into the playoffs.

  • Paul from Oxnard

I know we’re not at predictions yet, but I see this team as #5 in the West. Detroit, Chicago, Vancouver, & Calgary are better. I think the Kings are better then the rest of the teams in the conference.

It’ll be interesting to see how Bernier takes the demotion given his history of pouting. I hope he’s grown up some and realizes it’s just a numbers game and he’ll get his shot soon.

    GO KINGS GO!

The NHL hasnt had a waiver draft in years and wont this year.

  • dirtmover

I would like to see fro and purcell switched – or and I know that I’m in the minority here Brown and Fro switched- I don’t think that 2nd line will score enough to warrant the minutes- again a fine line for mistakes – we need to be much better at home this yr – the game last night was hard to gauge no drew or stoll-williams or SOD- hope to see everyone out at staples this yr – Rich a very nice article about you with pic in the bus. sec- of the New York times this morning with some of your quotes- for the very first time since the Hrudey yrs I feel good about the net – even the playoff yr of 2001-02-

  • Johnny Utah

Great – one more year of Ivanans taking stupid minor penalties and not sticking up for his teammates.

Let’s get Westgarth back up here sooner rather than later. Time to give the opposition the “Westie Flu”.

  • http://www.craigforrest.wordpress.com Crash Davis

Don’t think there is a waiver draft any longer. Since 2005 CBA, believe it went away. Could be wrong.

That said, there WILL be players exposed to waivers. Some of them for financial reasons (cheaper salary in minors), others for poor performance in training camp or pushed out in numbers game for final roster spots.

If you’re DL and someone hits your radar out there in waiverland – someone you believe can upgrade that 4th line – do you snap him up and send Lewis down to AHL?

  • kings2010

Martinez will be joining Hickey in the AHL come game 3. He gets the first crack to make an impression but he’ll be heading to Manchester as soon as OD is back. This wasn’t really a big decision. We’ll see who gets the call should there be a significant injury on the blueline.

  • variable

    let the experiment begin…

  • Real7

    iansez sez
“I thought Bernier looked much better than Ersberg too, perhaps the Kings are doing a little “character check” by sending him down and seeing how he responds.”

maybe they’re show-casing Ersberg in hopes of trading him for a #6 or #7 VETERAN defenseman….[as previously pointed out we are awfully young and a little thin on the blue line]….or we might pick-up somebody in the reverse draft…

  • Redlights

One of the biggest differences this year is that TM knows the players and we are entering this year with all 4 lines and the defensive pairings set. Hopefully this will allow for the chemistry to happen. When players are asked what makes your team so good, the ever popular response always includes chemistry!
We never had the opportunity to let that develop last year but we now seem ready for the chemistry to start playing a part in the Kings improvement.

  • Paul from Oxnard

I think by “waiver draft” he just meant that there would be players on waivers as teams trim their rosters down, and there are. Let’s not forget who the Kings got on waivers last year: Kyle Quincey

  • Ersberg

    Jet-

I’m answering your question with 3 questions.

    1) How many seconds did it take for Frolov to blow coverage in the Boston game that resulted in his punishment?

    2) How many seconds did it take for Harrold to blow coverage on Ryan last year?

    3) How many seconds did it take for Hickey to blow coverage resulting in a 3-on-1 last night?

5 minutes is an eternity on the ice, especially for a guy that continues to show the inability to cover his man.

  • Chris

Ok.. not the waiver draft… but to claim or have claimed off waivers, just like we picked up Kyle Quincey last year. I stand corrected.

  • Datacloud

    Ivanans > Westgarth

I’m sorry, but Westgarth would take the same penalties as Ivanans because although he’s a little quicker, he’s not even a borderline NHL player. Ivanans is a top five enforcer in this league and if DL is establishing this environment where we finally stick up for our players, then you will see a better response overall from Raitis.

Last year was not a good year from him in any case. His first and second seasons with us, a lot of people were singing his praises because he played well for his role. He’s not a defensive liability like Westgarth is, he plays a simple, dump the puck and forecheck style that is the safest offensive scheme you can play, and he’s a guy that can throw the body around and keep things honest, which I don’t believe Westgarth can do. Bottom line is that he is a better player, has more experience, and aside from the penalties, does not put us in bad positions with his play.

  • Marc

So does Purcell get to choose his own number now? Will he wear 62 this year?

  • JDM

    Ersberg,

Harrold didn’t blow his coverage on Ryan last year. Jeez. Ryan made a world class move that made Harrold’s head spin. Big difference. The other two weren’t really blown coverage in the conventional sense either. Hickey made a bad read and jumped up when he shouldn’t have and Frolov didn’t hustle getting back on D. To me, blown coverage is when, as an example, a player is standing in the crease, but the guy who should be covering is looking at the puck or picked up the wrong guy on a give and go or the like and leaves him wide open.

    Bad examples.

Harrold has no real skill, other than hustle, and gets knocked off the puck easier than a paper hat in a windstorm, but defensive positioning is not a huge weakness of his. Not a strength by any means, but not something to get all up in a twist over 5 minutes a night. I don’t want Harrold on this team either, but he is not the difference between a good season and a bad season, as “we’re in big trouble”, would indicate.

And this following comment is not just directed at you, but several others as well… some of you really freak out over nothing.

  • wavesinair

Ersberg said: “We’re in big trouble if we’re starting the season with Harrold centering that 4th line.”

Yeah, I just threw Harrold in there because I have some sort of sick fascination with him. He’s our thankless hole plugger. Every team needs one, no?

Thank you for the correction PakiFro. I had to look up FTFY! Hadn’t heard it before.

I’m good with Lewis too Irish Pat, although he is the least proven by far.

Redlights, you make a very interesting point and I hope you are right. I would love to see some consistency in the lines this year. I’m hoping TM does too…

  • mrbrett7

    Ersberg…

Hmmm…who knows more about hockey and evaluating talent?

You…or guys who have been doing this for dozens of years, and have been getting paid millions to do just that?

I’m going to go with management on this one (although I’d like to see Ivanans dropped off somewhere in TJ and left there).

  • Krystoff

    Mrbrett,

Sometimes, I actually think “Ersberg” is the more knowledgeable.

  • 54FIGHTING

Again, who are these teams that can’t wait to get EE on waivers? See the ‘Who’s #2′ thread to rule out Phx and Col.

So, to contradict myself: I wish someone would pick him up off waivers and then we could be rid of that crappy 2 year contract. Of course we’d have to put him on waivers first.

    Paul:

You seriously think we’re better than both SJ and Anaheim? I know we all think the Kings are the best but do you want to bet SJ finishes ahead of us in the standings?

  • kopifan

Speaking of Quincy,i’ve read that the Kngs may reaquire him.. Is it true? I think next year will be full of free agents.

  • Dan H.

Well Ivanans might be a heaveyweight but he sure as hell didn’t show it last year. We had cheapshots all over and I didn’t see him avenging anything. Hell he can’t catch them when he’s out there and just takes a hooking penalty while the guy he’s after laughs while he goes to the box.

    He’s horrible.

  • JDM

    54FIGHTING,

What part of Erbserg’s contract is crappy?

And just because he may not be the immediate backup on another team if put on waivers, that doesn’t mean a team wouldn’t snatch him up depth.

Ersberg would likely get claimed BECAUSE of that two-year contract.

  • jet

Ers — I can not recall the play, but let me give it to you. If Harold made one bad play averaging 10 minutes a game, how many bad plays will he make over this season with more experience, playing 5 minutes a game. Will he make enough bad plays to write off the season?

I think TM keeps him because of his work ethic and versatility. The more players we have going all out at every practice the faster the team will grow. One half of the roster has less than 100 games of NHL experience. The only way we are going to make the playoffs is if the kids grow. The fastest way to grow is to have game speed, high energy, competitive practices.
I have not been able to get to any of the practices, but if you have, note the difference in speed of one you have already attended and a practice at the end of this week. The pace is goping to pick up and Harold is a known quanity.
Finally, we need guys who earn half a million/yr. with the salary cap. We are not good enough yet to have players turn down 8 million dollar contracts from other teams to sign with us for 700K.

  • Ersberg

    JDM-

I’d bet any amount of cash in the world that if it were Lidstrom, Ryan would have been stopped where he should have been stopped: Just beyond the blue line.

That’s your opinion – it’s flawed – but you have your right to it.

There are many ways a player can blow coverage. Frolov, at times, gets lazy on the back check coverage, when picking up wingers. That’s where he gets nailed by TM.

Again, JDM, I know you weren’t directing your last comment at me, but there is no “freaking out” happening, here. My comment regarding Harrold is valid; he’s not a center. Hell, he’s not even a good winger. He does blow coverage assignments.

MrBrett-Same as with JDM. It’s a discussion board. You comparing my hockey knowledge to management, is like justifying swapping a Mercedes for a 10-speed.

  • Ersberg

    Jet-

I agree with you, re speed. It’s just that, well, Harrold is bad. And He can take Richardson with him. I’d rather let kids from Manchester, that are slated for future 3rd/4th line duties, fill their shoes for a next to nothing salary.

  • jet

Ers — I see your point, but I guess my question would be which two players would you bring up from Manchester for 5 minutes a night for every other game?

  • JDM

    Erbserg,

I was going to make a point about Lidstrom being hyperbole, since of course Lidstrom would stop it, he’s Lidstrom. You can’t compare Harrold, or anyone really, to Lidstrom. We’ll be lucky if we can compare Doughty to him in an “IS as good as” sense, as opposed to “COULD be as good as” sense, but you made my point for me with your Mercedes to 10 speed comment. Harrold looked stupid on that Ryan goal, but it was one of the most breathtaking goals I’ve seen live. Doughty has looked bad and given up goals that way as well. That goal is not in any way, shape or form evidence that Harrold is bad at covering his man.

I was parsing terms in a way. To me, coverage is being on your man, knowing where to be. Being made look the fool, like with that goal, is different in that Harrold had picked up Ryan, but was simply outclassed by an incredibly skilled player.

But otherwise, yes, players can blow coverage in different ways, but nearly all players screw up coverage, except for Lidstrom, and even then, he’s not PERFECT. But blowing an assignment here and there is not akin to being a liability to the point where the team is in trouble.

And Harrold isn’t anything. Can we even call him a defenseman anymore? I don’t like Harrold either. He’s fine in the press box, because it is useful having a guy who can slot in anywhere you want in case of an in****. Where I disagree with you is on the bad impact you think he will. Harrold doesn’t take anything away from the team, I just don’t think he adds enough in games. While I was somewhat parsing terms with the coverage thing, here I am not.

I said “freaking out” because there seems to be a general tone that having Harrold and/or Richardson on the roster as 4th liners is going to really hurt the team, and since I think we all are hoping for playoffs, when we are concerned about the team it is basically because we feel what we are concerned about could be the difference between the playoffs and golf in April. I don’t think Harrold is that difference.

On a side note, I know capital letters are seen as hostile, but I just want to make it clear that I don’t know how to italicize on this blog. So no hostility meant, just emphasis.

  • mask0425x

Hey JDM, you can practice HTML for the remaining 48 hours unless Jill or someone else keeps this blog alive.

    http://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_formatting

Now, on a more serious (and related) note, any ideas why the Kings would not try to keep Schenn for up to 10 games before sending him back to the juniors? I would love them to do something similar to what Buffalo did a few years ago after the lockout when they rolled all four lines and had little use for an enforcer in a good number of games. Just remember how they smacked the Kings silly then… The fourth line then becomes an energy line – the kids can certainly provide that while facing top opposition and hopefully racking up a few points in the process. Just to make it clear, I am NOT suggesting delegating Schenn to a checking duty between Clune and Ivanans…

  • Kris

Martinez I believe is temporary. Only until OD is off suspension. As much as I dislike Ersburg, it makes sense. If we put him on wavers we may have to call up Zatkoff if someone gets hurt. He did great in the ECHL last year (I live in Vegas and saw him play against our local team) but don’t know how good he was in Manchester. I don’t think relying on him as our emergency third would be good. Granted, Ersburg doesn’t have a good record in a shootout and Bernier had a better pre-season GAA. But because of contracts I reluctantly say I guess it was the right move?

  • 54FIGHTING

    JDM

The 2 year part and even just giving him one (a contract). It would have been better to have a vet for 1 year but that’s not what DL decided. So another team is going to claim him for ‘depth’ but would lose him again when he has to clear re-entry waivers and then get stuck with paying 1/2 his salary. I just don’t see any teams with the need right now to have a mediocre at best back up goalie. Maybe when injuries hit like with LaBarbera but otherwise?????

    Also Bernier>Ersberg

So, we put off the problem until later but what happens down the road? Do we try to get a 7th for him? What about next year when Bernier is ready (he’s ready now) and nobody wants EE? You do realize that Manny Fernandez is still out there along with some other netminders that are all better than EE. I’d still prefer to see Quick and Bernier battle it out and push one another but we all know DL likes his goalies to put in their time ‘in the trenches’ as TM says.

  • Duckhunter

I have to chime in here on the Ryan goal. I was sitting 3 rows back of the glass and about 10 feet away from that move he put on Harrold. It had nothing to do with Harrold and everything to do with Ryan. It was a sick move made by a pretty darn good hockey player. I don’t think you can really place blame on that play, it was a nice display of skill by the other guy.
