Second period: Kings 3, Blues 1

Jeff Carter got ahead of the pack and slipped a backhander between the legs of St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott in the opening moments of the second period to give the Kings a 2-0 lead. Davis Drewiske then scored his first of the season to make it 3-0, and it seemed the Kings were headed for an easy victory over the Blues.

With defenseman Alec Martinez out for the rest of the game after suffering an upper body injury in the first period, Keaton Ellerby stepped into the void and made a terrific break-in pass to set up Carter’s second goal of the game.

Alex Steen’s power-play goal for St. Louis cut the Kings’ led to 3-1 just before the end of the period. The Blues, losers of four in a row, seemed lost for long stretches of the first two periods, but they found something at last in the closing minutes of the middle frame. It bears watching as the final period begins.
